Illegal aliens didn't build U.S.

It's a new chapter in the Promised Land. We are becoming The Land That Better Keep Its Promises - or Else. Even promises that never were made.
A half-million illegal aliens and friends and sympathizers have taken to the streets of late, demanding unhampered residency and employment. Their anger is being whipped up against an America that would fence its borders against more coming over, and require proper payroll-keeping and taxpaying from employers who hire them outside the law.
Why? In part because a new myth is gaining currency. It is that illegal immigrants, mostly of Mexican or other Hispanic origin, "built this country." Without them the economy would collapse.
"We are the motor of this nation!" a speaker harangued the 500,000 who marched in Los Angeles on Saturday. "We construct your schools! We cook your food!" Other thousands marched to this beat of indispensability in Phoenix, Denver and Milwaukee.
That people who entered the United States by stealth feel entitled to tie up U.S. downtowns with their grievances is nervy in the first place. But their slant on U.S. history is off the wall. No better clue might be needed that kids should be taught in English, fast!
It was religious freedom-seekers from England who began building this country, followed by natives of every part of Europe, Asia and Africa. And their descendants keep right on building it as e pluribus unum Americans -- "out of the many, one." Don't expect them to honor some dubious economic necessity to let everybody in.

--excellent article.
The most noticable effect if the illegals were to disappear overnight would be empty space in jails and prisons and schools where the academic level would go up instantly---

Big story in the local newspaper this morning is how "16 immigrants, traveling in a van were released after U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service agents decided they were not a threat".
On March 16, the illegals filled up their van with diesel fuel, rendering it inoperable.
The men were heading to New Jersey to work. They had already been stopped in Indiana and ordered to appear in court once they reached their destination.
Catch and release again. Happens all the time around here (Pittsburgh, PA area).

They are illegal and shouldn't be here but the reason they are here is people hire them. Employers are the ones causing the problems and they are the ones who should get the jail time. If taxes are not being paid it is because employers are not taking out the taxes from the pay. They are not taking out SS so this too is against the law. Seems to me that employers are the ones selling out America for a buck Why yes growing food and building buildings is "eviL", evil, I say.

"Obviously, Americans and legal immigrants would. Because the jobs would rise to market levels of compensation and appropriate taxation or go unfilled. As it is, we subsidize agribusiness and service industries (and our own consumers, let's admit) with an underclass of ill-paid, off-the-books, alien workers. And try to kid ourselves, as President Bush seems to, that this labor input is vital to the economy. As if it's all on the asset side, never mind the costs of social services. Politically, to the nervous, the marchers might have a case. Economically, they don't.
The author "GETS IT" and I would bet so do the lawmaking politicians who prefer to lawbreak for the almighty lobbyists and businesses at what cost to the taxpayer? I am so tired of supporting the illegals and hispanics who are on medicaid and welfare. If they "came just to work" than why are they on welfare? Oh yeh because of the employers who hire them illegally and pay them below minimum wage.Wait shouldn't that be illegal?

If the government would ease restrictions on legal immigration and do some kind of guest worker program, then getting people to do those jobs wouldn't be a problem.

Vegetable pickers? Not in my state. We're not agriculture based here. The illegals here are doing most of the framing, painting, roofing, plumbing, and drywall on residential and commerical construction. Is this work Americans won't do? No. Increasingly it's work they can't get because they have been crowded out of the of market.
You are cherry-picking cherry-picking as your justification for why we need 30 million illegals clogging our hospitals, social services, and public schools. That's not very honest of you.
In my state these people have moved quickly beyond work that "Americans won't do" and have been aggressively taking up much higher-paying and more skilled jobs.

There are plenty of teens out there who are willing to mow lawns and shovel snow and work at McD's. I did when I was a kid and my kids do the same. They like the money and it really can pay pretty well for the amount of work involved , especially considering it's virtually tax free (except for McD's).

This is about illegal aliens invading our country.
Soon they will take ALL the jobs as the illegals will work for far cheaper wages than Americans will.
The middle class of this country is being destroyed.
Hope they take your job next at 1/3 of the money your employer is paying you. Then your job can become a "job Americans won't do".

We got pretty far here without them taking "jobs that Americans won't do".
And just who did those jobs in America before the Mexicans swarmed in? The jobs didn't do themselves.

The thrust of the article must be absolutely correct as any thoughtful and observant person living in the USA would know.
Last night I was clicking through the channels on TV and I happened upon a PBS program on great engineering projects around NYNY. You have the GW bridge (Amman), you have the Veranzanno narrows bridge (Amman), the Holland tunnel (Holland) and other bridges we all know (Lindenthall). Amman and Lindenthall had accents but were classically and technically educated and spoke perfect English. Holland was similarly educated and was at least second or third generation American.
The point is, great works require great men (or women) to conceptualize and execute the ideas and plans. In these cases, government was merely the payer and the lubricant for the engineering feats. Hoards of criminal aliens can not do what is necessary to elevate their masses, let alone, the masses of the people to where they arrive. Labor alone is always available, at the right price and time, it has always been available, and as labor becomes more expensive, great engineers design and develop ways to extend and amplify the labor available by using machines and better systems. Simply put, labor should always be the least of our concerns as a nation, the greatness of our best and average person should be what we are concerned with.
Identify a great Mexican aircraft designer or builder, a bridge builder and designer, or a physicist? If they are available, those are whom we should allow to immigrate here, but leave out the leaf rakers, the pool cleaners, the chicken pluckers, etc., those are available anywhere in the world where one wants to find them.

I'd like to see all illegals kicked out, but it cracks me up to see business blamed for amswering consumers' demands.
American consumers are going to demand that most illegals be readmitted. Fine, I just want the government to control the immigration.

Any illegal who claims he built this country took pay to build what they built. It was much more than they would have received for the same work in Mexico. Yes, stop working. See if we care. Stay home from school. Then you can go on welfare and prove the point that you are a drag on our economy, but as the article says, we will fill those jobs that are necessary. Sure, costs will rise. That's life. It's happened before. But the people who have those jobs will spend their salaries in the US, not send it to Mexico. If a job can't be filled, it either is not important enough or it can be filled by someone who legally enters the country.
Please, go home. Use your energy to throw out the bums ruining your Mexican government. Fix up your own country so people will want to go there to work rather than here. Why is your country such a mess? You think taking over a corner of ours will make it better? No, it will become an extension of your disfunctional Mexico. The disease will spread. You will just become Mexicans again living in that same old rotten Mexico, just farther north. Maybe in a hundred years there will be enough of you to take over the whole country. Do you think this will somehow make your culture better? No, it will just be a larger Mexico, probably worse than the old one.
No, your problem is not the US. It is you attitude. The greatness of our country does not come from where the land is as much as who occupies it. Replacing us with you will make the American culture disappear.
You seem to think that something was stolen from you. Well, guess what? Most of the people who came here did so because something was stolen from them. The Irish because of the British, the eastern Euros because of the communists, and soon, the rest of Europe because of the Muzzles. Read your own history. You took over from those who were there before you. Many of you are descendants of the Spanish who came over. Should all with Spanish blood be kicked out? The Spanish were ruthless with those who lived there before, you you should have to leave.
And how do you think those poor folks in South American ended up living on the tops of mountains, trying to grow food on rock? Some of your forebears drove them there so they could get the better land. Do you think they said, "This place is too nice. There is land, water, and animals. It is a place where we can survive. No, let's climb to the tops of those mountains and see if we can be up to the challenge." No, your great-great-great-grand parents chased them there. You should get out and let them come down from the mountains and take back their land.
So, illegals of North America, you are here illegally. Look the word up. Go back to your country and find out what it means. Find out if your country has immigration laws. Go to a library and borrow some time on a computer paid for by us. Go here
http://www.mexperience.com/liveandwork/immigration.htm
and read a bit if you can read English. Read some of the the last few paragraphs, especially:
Immigrant, Active: - i.e. you do want to acquire permanent residency in Mexico AND work there: You will need to satisfy the requirements for entry (e.g. professional, sponsored by a company, etc), or be able and prepared to invest at least 40,000 times the minimum daily wage in Mexico City.
That seems fair enough. Now we are going to require the same from you. What, you say? Not fair? Right, your country is not fair. So don't tell us we are not fair. Clean up your own house.
So, would you have any problem if we applied YOUR laws to YOU? Your country generally only wants wealthy immigrants who will not be a drag on the Mexican economy. So, either be happy where you are or go somewhere else. Emmigrate.

I was watching a program this morning on the History channel about Henry Ford. As part of addressing the problems he was having with retaining employees he provided several significant incentives. He more than doubled the average wage and he shortened the work day to 8 hours. But - in order to take advantage of these incentives the employees had to essentially agree to numerous things. They had to buy a home locally, keep it clean, open bank accounts, learn English and more. In addition they participated in an 'event' where they each, one-by-one, stepped into a large 'melting pot' wearing their traditional cultural garb (from whence they came). Once in the pot they changed into a nice suit and hat or a nice dress as appropriate and then climbed out of the pot waving an American flag.
*sigh*
