Jill Carroll Statement
RAMSTEIN AIRBASE, GERMANY I'm so happy to be free and am looking forward to spending a lot of time with my family. I want to express my deep appreciation to all the people who worked so long and hard for my release. I am humbled by the sympathy and support expressed by so many people during my kidnapping.
In the past few days, the US military and officials have been extremely generous, and I am grateful for their help. Throughout this ordeal, many US agencies have committed themselves to bringing me safely home.
My colleagues at The Christian Science Monitor have worked ceaselessly to secure my release, and worked with security consultants to do so. Many other news organizations, both inside and outside of Iraq, as well as many officials from Iraq and other countries, worked hard to bring about my freedom.
So many people around the world spoke out on my behalf.
Thank you, all of you.
During my last night in captivity, my captors forced me to participate in a propaganda video. They told me they would let me go if I cooperated. I was living in a threatening environment, under their control, and wanted to go home alive. I agreed.
Things that I was forced to say while captive are now being taken by some as an accurate reflection of my personal views. They are not. The people who kidnapped me and murdered Alan Enwiya are criminals, at best. They robbed Alan of his life and devastated his family. They put me, my family and my friends--and all those around the world, who have prayed so fervently for my release--through a horrific experience. I was, and remain, deeply angry with the people who did this.
I also gave a TV interview to the Iraqi Islamic Party shortly after my release. The party had promised me the interview would never be aired on television, and broke their word. At any rate, fearing retribution from my captors, I did not speak freely. Out of fear I said I wasn't threatened. In fact, I was threatened many times.
Also, at least two false statements about me have been widely aired: That I refused to travel and cooperate with the US military and that I refused to discuss my captivity with US officials. Again, neither is true.
I want to be judged as a journalist, not as a hostage. I remain as committed as ever to fairness and accuracy--to discovering the truth--and so I will not engage in polemics. But let me be clear: I abhor all who kidnap and murder civilians, and my captors are clearly guilty of both crimes.
Now, I ask for the time to heal. This has been a taxing 12 weeks for me and my family. Please allow us some quiet time alone, together.
Richard Bergenheim statement
The Monitor wants to add its gratitude to everyone who is helping Jill return home. In addition we want to thank again all those in the Iraqi press who have been tireless in their campaign for Jill's release; we wish to thank the politicians, sheiks, and clerics in Iraq, Jordan, Egypt and other countries who have spoken out as well. And we need to thank all the citizens of Iraq, regular people like you and me, who continue to speak out strongly as well. We are in debt to too many people to thank them all. Jill will be home soon. As she writes, it is a time for healing. Let the healing begin.

Okay, she apologized. Now she should stay out of the Middle East.
Why is it you are so impatient for this rather plain looking woman to strip?
Wasn't that made while she was captive?

no, this was a post-kidnapping interview, but she still continued to say the same things until she left Iraq.
"I want to be judged as a journalist, not as a hostage. I remain as committed as ever to fairness and accuracy--to discovering the truth--and so I will not engage in polemics. But let me be clear: I abhor all who kidnap and murder civilians, and my captors are clearly guilty of both crimes."
This quote puzzles me.
Not good enough.
SILL waiting to see HER say all this. NOT some spokesman.
Amazingly, the LAMESTREAM PRESS never points out the incredibly SIMILARITIES between the rhetoric of the ISLAMO-FACIST TERRORISTS and the DEMOCRAT PARTY SUPPORTERS here in America.
You know what happned? The dad had a long talk with Jill on the phone and told her to pipe down.
Who wants to bet the 'rats at DU will say Bush forced her to make this statement?
There was no reason for her to be wearing the hijab when she got out of custody. The rest of the clothes are perfectly understandable.
Uhm, does she know she wrote this statement?
I'm waiting for a few apologies from many who were quick to condemn her before she even made it to free soil.
She went over there with an agenda so why would anyone think her agenda changed before, during or after the ordeal?
Careful, ghetto girls will say you're a bigot. (sarcasm)
Daniel Pearl and Daniel Berg had a different outcome.
I begrudge the girl nothing. She is/was a naive useful idiot. Hopefully, she is now wiser.
Just dont ask me to judge you as an American..
Keep waiting. I still have my suspicions.
Fair enough. Until then, best to withhold (or at least qualify) all speculation.
I think the US govt should start making it clear that in future no soliders' lives will be risked to rescue civilians who insert themselves into a war zone. The only exceptions would be those who are working in contractor or govt jobs supporting the military effort.
I'll apologize. I must admit I followed her case rather closely and was shocked to hear her interview in the Party's headquarters but the Arab garb.
Perhaps she was still under duress. She will tell us the whole story eventually.
something tells me they didnt have to force her too hard
Seems you were right and I was wrong
Is it just me, or does it look like she had time to stop at a salon in Baghdad and get some red highlights for herself?
Thank you, Jill. Now please put on a wet t-shirt to erase the months-long vision of you in a burka.
...well I dunno..she might have actually been under the gun when she said those things...at the Air Force Academy they tought us in POW training to say such if it meant the difference between life and death...I'm inclined to give her the benefit of the doubt for the moment
I feel the same, I don't think most posting here understands exactly what she's been thru.
She put on 30 lbs. while she was a captive, too.
DU is Dhimmicrat Underclass,right?...heh
Oh yeah, sure, hypocrite. Damn if we appologize, damn if we are dupes. It's the old pharisean evil game of point scoring and ignoring the truth.
Journalists never appologize, have no possible neutrality in this war on terrorism yet pretend they do, but we should appologize?
I'll appologize to myself first for being a dupe of Jill and the media still, despite my suspicions.
It's fair to say that being in the dark as to their shenanigans would be a nice way to trap either way we go, trusting or distrusting. It's the convenience of media cover ups, laundering priviledges and demands of devaluing others by asking them to appologize.
Dead giveaway of a sentence (among others) written not by her but for her or dictated to her. Heck, but if you can fake sincerity you have it made!
That's my take as well.
AMEN to that.
And, her statement thanks the US Military, which is more than we can say for the those rescued hostages from a couple weeks ago.
I hope she is a little more skeptical now about the claims of the other side.
Those pictures were taken when she was still in the presence of Arab men who are the officers (and enforcers) in a political party which is compatible with her captors.
Her best course of action was to not pi$$ any of these cockroaches off.
What bothers me is, what she said in the interviews is not that different from what she said in her articles and columns. No one was holding a gun to her head then, were they?
Even our most casual conversations are weighed and trimmed before being tossed out into the wallow.
As I understand she had American protection at the time. The notion that there were Arab men in the room shows entirely too much deference for someone who was imprisoned.
They are putting a stop to all of this.
But you still want to get her clothes off ~ you ol'debilman you!
No, just that rag on her head.
Now we will find out if she was an innocent victim or if this was a stunt set up with her friend, Natasha Tynes.
