US 'intoxicated' by power: Gorbachev
Zee News ^ | April 03, 2006

Posted on 04/02/2006 4:06:09 PM PDT by Tailgunner Joe

Washington, Apr 02: Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, who triggered the demise of the Soviet Union's Communist empire, said in an interview published today that the United States was "intoxicated" by its power and should not impose its will on others.

"This talk of pre-emptive strikes, of ignoring the UN Security Council and international legal obligations -- all this is leading toward a dark night," Gorbachev told time magazine.

"I think some people may be pushing President Bush in the wrong direction," he said of the us leader.

"America is intoxicated by its position as the world's only superpower. It wants to impose its will.

"But America needs to get over that. It has responsibilities as well as power. I say this as a good friend of America," said Gorbachev, who considered his US contemporary, President Ronald Reagan, a friend as well, and attended his funeral.

The former Soviet President, 75, was in the United States last week to promote his book on the history of his government's reforms.

I don't understand how protecting our citizens by interdicting this threat equals imposing our will around the world???

I guess repeating this line is the Dem talking point that Gorby must follow along with. No One will be expected to explain it through and our ill informed electorate will take it as it is.

""America is intoxicated by its position as the world's only superpower. It wants to impose its will."

This man is the biggest freaking dufus.

Tell me something, if america was drunk with power with would have nuked everyone of our enemies, and made slaves of the rest that didnt piss us off.

We kind of muddle through life and have enormous success and we don't exploit 1/10 of 1% of the power we hold. It pisses people like gorby and the french off because if they had 1/2 the power we have, the world would be a ugly place.

We dont act like a super power like they would, we appear as country bumkins not knowing the power we hold. And you know what that is fine for most americans, and that is what pisses people that crave that kind of power off the most.

Actually, Gorby, the U.S. is intoxicated by DRUGS...
Much of which is provided by the Mexican Drug Cartels(Government).. probably in league with the suppliers which are the worlds terrorist organizations..

No problem the Three Amigos will deal with it.. (Vincente, Boosh, and Harper)..

May be unwise to judge the former General Secretary on the selective clips from a media source.
One of Reagan's most positive attributes was his willingness, and desire, to not only listen to the opinions of others, especially America's adversaries, but also to seek out why they thought so.
This item from Zee News does not elaborate on which particular matter(s) Gorbachev is referring to. To speculate would only be reactionary...par for the course here, I'm afraid.

Think it coincidence that America's predominant leaders chose to live in relative isolation away from the masses? Reagan and Jefferson even preferred the sanctuary of a mountain top.
Could you blame them!

Former Soviet leader warns of U.S.-Russian tension - 04/02/2006 - PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (AP) -- Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev warns that tensions between the United States and Russia are reversing diplomatic gains made by both nations following the Cold War.

Gorbachev spoke to reporters yesterday before giving a speech at the Carnegie Abbey Club in Portsmouth.

The former Communist Party chief and leader of the U-S-S-R says hard-liners in both countries are erasing the goodwill developed since Gorbachev effectively dismantled the Soviet Union. He says the U-S must look at Russia as a partner rather than a failed superpower.

Gorbachev didn’t address U-S policy in Iraq, but he said Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein was a “creature of the West.”

Former Soviet leader warns of worsening relations - 04/02/2006 - "There was a kind of euphoria about the prospects of working with America," Gorbachev said through a translator, according to The Providence Journal. "These assets are being squandered. They are being withered away."

"Russia will never agree to be a dependent," he said. "Through history, no one was able to bring Russia to its knees."

Gorbachev and the end of the Cold War - Earlier this month, former Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev celebrated his 75th birthday with a concert and conference at his foundation in Moscow. Unfortunately, he is not popular with the Russian people, who blame him for the loss of Soviet power. But, as Gorbachev has replied to those who shout abuse at him, "Remember, I am the one who gave you the right to shout."

At 75, Gorbachev Laments U.S. 'Arrogance' - "Ending the Cold War was given as a gift... The winner's complex is worse than an inferiority complex, because it's harder to cure."

Gorbachev blasts US, urges patience on Hamas - "There is only one superpower now and it doesn't know what to do with its status... As a result, we got Yugoslavia and Iraq, and the situation has only got worse."

Russia also won Cold War, says Gorbachev - ("Perestroika won")

Gorbachev: U.S. needs perestroika - "The world needs a new vision, new policies ...I support the movement that says a different world is possible ...The world will not accept dictatorship or domination. We need dialogue."

US bid to dominate invites disaster - Gorbachev

Gorbachev Condemns 'Illegal' Iraq War - "I regard the invasion of Iraq as undermining international law and undermining democracy because millions of people spoke out against it."

This is what a leader sounds like when they are just 'intoxicated'.

Excerpted from New Internationalist 343 March 2002

Vladimir Putin
Putin addressing a baffled audience at
Rice University, Texas, November 2001.

'Ladies and gentlemen, as we know, Texas cowboys have the heels of their high boots slanted inward to make sure that, when they work at the ranch, their backs don’t get stained by mud. And the same applies to international relations. Cleanliness is a good symbol.’

This is what a leader sounds like when they are 'intoxicated' by power.

Excerpted from TONY WOOD PUTIN'S COLONIAL WAR

One of the most disturbing pronouncements in this idiom comes from Putin himself, announcing on Russian television in early November 1999 that he would ‘corner the bandits in the shithouse and wipe them out.’
