FLORIDA FREEPER EMERGENCY ACTION ALERT!

Congressman Jim Davis (who is running for Governor) is holding a hearing on Oil Drilling in the Gulf of Mexico at 9AM this Monday morning at the Port Authority Boardroom in Tampa, Florida (Channelside Drive near the Aquarium). The usual suspects are sure to stack the conversation with the same tired environmental fear-mongering. You see, you and your SUV are the problem, not supply controls by the cartels. Freepers, this is an economic and national security issue of the first magnitude. $3.00 per gallon gas (OR MORE) is a certainty unless we act. The lie to the environmental protection argument of these anti-capitalists has been demonstrated by the RED TIDE. The RED TIDE killed hundreds of thousands of TONS of sea-life on Florida's Gulf coast last year. 100 miles of coastline were despoiled by this blight, yet the environmentalists ignored the problem as a natural phenomena. The most promising energy areas are rich in Natural Gas, a clean fuel. If the nation leases the energy tracts, then we cold use some of the money to defeat the RED TIDE!

I'm in 2nd-year Biology class this semester....and I've leanred that RED TIDE is caused by specific dinoflagellates, a sea-going protist.

So....perhaps theres won't be enough sealife for the oil rigs to disrupt. I'm voting for it!

Red Tide

"A general idea of what occurs in the aquatic food chain may help in the understanding of red tides. There are single-cell plants (known as algae) located in all the water systems throughout the world. These minute aquatic plants capture and use energy from sunlight, as do land plants. The growth of these aquatic algae is one of the most important processes on earth, because it serves as the first step in the system of energy transfer through aquatic food webs. All aquatic animals in both fresh and saltwater require these small plants to maintain their existence.

These microscopic algae, which occur in a vast variety, generally go through yearly cycles of rapid growth and decay. The growth period is characterized by a burst of growth and multiplication for two or three weeks, during which time each single plant may have multiplied into millions of its kind. This phenomenon is called blooming, and it goes on season after season in surface waters all over the world. Which particular microscopic plants grow in any given water body depends upon a number of factors, the major ones being temperature, salinity, light intensity, and nutrient level. Thousands of different species of microalgae exist, periodically blooming and decaying. They are the initiators of the food chain."

My research, has indicated that the algae, K.Blevins, is the culprit. I believe that an intensive study to elucidate the DNA of this organism will unlock the genomne that produces this toxin. New techniques, known as RNAi technology will allow us to discover the silver bullet - an abiltity to turn off the toxic producing proteins. This is too much to detail here. But you may research the technology further on the PBS website with the program "Science NOW" with Robert Krulewich.

Oh, ok, I believe you. And I also highly-believe that RNA/DNA understanding is the Key to halting the RED TIDE.
