Which flag do you want?

As one of those American rarities -- a Los Angeles native -- I looked at recent, mainly Mexican protests against proposed restrictions on illegal immigration with more than just outrage over lost U.S. sovereignty. I was also reflexively examining aerial photos to pinpoint where in Los Angeles those hundreds of thousands of Mexican-flag-waving demonstrators were marching.

It was downtown Los Angeles, a section of the sprawling city I rarely visited growing up. Then it hit me: As a kid in the 1960s, my mother had taken me on an outing to Olvera Street, an old section of downtown ("old" for Los Angeles being mid-to-late-19th century) where visitors went to enjoy folkloric Mexican food and crafts as -- it sounds unbelievable now -- a colorful tourist attraction. And visitors still go there. But then it really hit me: There weren't that many Mexicans in Los Angeles back then.

Or, to put it another way, citing the online encyclopedia Encarta: "In 1960, non-Hispanic whites made up 82 percent of the population of Los Angeles County." Forty years later, the 2000 census showed that the white population had dwindled to 31 percent, while Hispanics -- 79 percent of whom hail from Mexico -- accounted for 44.6 percent of population. This colossal surge has made the Mexican population of Los Angeles second only to that of Mexico City. Little wonder Los Angeles voters in 2005 elected Antonio Villaraigosa, the city's first Hispanic mayor since 1872 when, as the research site notes, Los Angeles was "a small frontier town of about 6,000 people."

California is one of the most beautiful states in the Union. Plus its the breadbasket of the US.

Because illegals or no it is still a vital part of our economy. We don't want to handover Silicon Valley and the California high tech industries to another country. Nor do we want to hand over the agriculture.

All you have to do is drop LA and SF into the Pacific.

Nonurban California is pretty conservative as witnessed by my Republican majority county.

I have lived in California my whole life. Almost everyone I know is Conservative. We want these illegals out of here. Its the government and the media that is not supporting us. We do not want to give an inch of our state to them, THEY need to leave. It would be nice if the rest of the country would stop thinking we are all wackos. LA and San Francisco are relatively small portions and that is where the wackos are. We are Reagan country....and don't forget the home of FR too.

What's interesting is that the Maxine Waters variety of Southern California politicos haven't quite popped wise to the fact that being black no longer will fly as a tool to get elected....they'll get a clue come their next election cycles.

Everyone who considers themselves a part of Western Civilization should read the prophetic book, "Camp of the Saints" by Jean Raspail. It was first published in France in 1973, and was just recently translated into English. I'm almost finished with it and it's stunning in it's accuracy of predicting what is now happening. The author even named his ficticious pope, Benedict XVI. He also had the leftists down pat.

Within 25-50 years there will be no Western Civilization. Even Russia is being invaded.

Not sure I agree with this article in that the way I read it, it associates legitimate, legal Hispanic culture with illegal immigration. The erasing of this line is killing our arguments. We should embrace 'legal' Hispanic culture in the US and reward those who have come here legally. It is an insult to US Hispanic culture as a whole to link them in-toto with illegal immigration. All this does is make this a fight between euro-centric US and Hispanic US, which it is not.

There are a lot of good conservative folks here in CA who are fighting for the states future. They could use all the support they can get. Besides, economically and strategically speaking, your statement is very ignorant. Also, there have been a lot of great military men & women who've come out of California since Reagan.

the immigration debate that American political elites have so assiduously and irresponsibly avoided for decades

Just as they have avoided facing up to the looming crises of the national debt, Social Security, and Medicare.

Russia is not part of the "Western" Civilisation -- it, along with a lot of Eastern Europe is part of the Slavic/Orthodox civilisation. "Western" Civilisation started to decline when it broke away from the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church will continue as it still remains in the hearts of Europeans, Americans, Asians, Africans etc. Perhaps a decadent post-Christian civilisation will disappear but the Christian Civilisation (that includes Russia, Latin America, Central America, Asia, Europe, Africa etc.) will remain.
