A 'chasm' in Congress deepens over immigration
Boston Globe ^ | April 3, 2006 | Michael Kranish

Posted on 04/03/2006 1:26:33 PM PDT by La Enchiladita

WASHINGTON -- The congressional fight over the status of 11 million undocumented immigrants flared into even greater uncertainty yesterday, with a leading Democrat saying there is a ''chasm" between the House and Senate, and Republicans clashing over whether to embrace President Bush's approach on the issue.

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee, striving to repair the split in the Republican Party, said he wants the Senate to vote by Friday on a revised version of the proposal that has passed the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The committee's bill would enable undocumented immigrants to try to earn legal status after meeting several requirements, including payment of back taxes.

But in an indication of the difficult road ahead, Frist said he wants tighter restrictions on undocumented immigrants. ''That bill specifically gives a privileged path to citizenship for people who have broken the law," Frist said on CNN's ''Late Edition."

The committee measure faces an uncertain future on the Senate floor because it was passed with the votes of four Republicans, who joined with eight Democrats.

The majority of Republicans on the panel opposed the bill, and many Republicans are split in the full Senate as well.

Well, I'm getting on the horn to Frist as we speak...

"How long have you been working in the underground economy?"

"Ever since I got here."

"How much money have you earned since you illegally entered the country"

"Nada."

"Consider yourself legalized. Report back to us in 3 to 6 years."

"Gracias."

The media is content to spotlight republican divisions, and ignore the demorat reality. The republicans are going to have to get them on record, soon. I know the dems around me hate this. Many seem unaware of the open border cavalier attitude their side takes on this. They need to feel the heat, too!

FREEPER ACTIVISM---PASS THE WORD: If employers who are officers of publicly-held companies are breaking the law, using company assets illegally by employing illegal aliens, they are jeopardizing the investments of partners and shareholders.

The SEC would want to know about it. EMAIL: enforcement@SEC.gov

Another way is to inform companies who hire illegal aliens that you will not invest in companies that break the law.

Also check your mutual funds to see if they are invested in companies that employ illegals. Notify your mutual fund you do not want your money invested with companies that break the law.

That's the key right there, enforcement comes first before any other fancy finagling with temporary worker programs.

We need some serious caps on all immigration. Having nearly 20 million come in illegally from Mexico and Central America over the past 20 years has been way too much. We are definitely glutted on illegals and most likely on legals as well.

All the fuss over bills is meaningless, clumsy political posturing. What a disgraceful spectacle.

We are in a fight for what is left of America. The globalists wish to erase our borders and encourage a "free flow" of citizens -- theoretically between the countries, but in reality --- into America.

No compromise, they need to go home first and then maybe come back legally!

No. They need to acknowledge that THEY BROKE THE LAW. They need to be forced to suffer the consequences of breaking that law, which is stipulated in 28 USC. Specifically, the penalties are fines and/or incarceration. It is not "respect for the law" which demands an extralegal penalty for those who arrived here illegally. It is just vindictivness. Further, it will hurt us more than them, by ceding phenomenal power to the fed for enforcement ("papers, please") and denying the social/population/economic forces that brought them here in the first place.

We need to control our border, and we need to bring those presently in the country into submission to our legal system, which includes proper documentation, submission to our (illegal) tax system, and compliance with our myriad codes, be they housing codes, health standards, or whatever. Failure to meet these standards should be met with the same penalties as anyone else, which are fines, incarceration, or both. Expulsion for those already here and settled should be a last resort, not the first step.

Our illegal immigration system is a horrible mess, but demanding the expulsion of millions as a first step towards "fixing" it is shortsighted, silly, and hurts both them and us. It does nothing but assuage our bruised egos.

Get control of the border. Punish the current lawbreaking immigrants by the penalties currently on the books. Revise our immigration system to include some type of acknowledgement that the country wants LEGAL immigrants here to work. Skip the chest thumping "EXPEL THEM ALL FIRST, THEN WE TALK." Again, that might make people feel good when they vent in that manner, but I want to fix a problem, not just make a point.

Thank you for the opportunity to post my (very conservative) opinion.

Thank you for your VERY thoughtful list! I think the biggest fear that most conservatives feel about a "guest worker" program is the feeling that it will be a "We can't control it, so lets just make it legal" approach.

Your list is thoughtful, rational, and an attempt to avoid that.

While I have a real problem with number 3 (employer sanctions), the rest of them are very reasonable in one form or another.

I might add to milestone 1 the requirement that ALL guest workers be ineligible for gov't programs, not just expulsion of criminals who are on such programs.

I have an interest in this area, and I thank you again for your thoughtful post.

IMO, They need to begin with closing and securing the border with a physical barrier and levying stiff penalties for employers who are intent to break the law. Then we can concern ourselves with the "11 million" with later legislation.

Frist does not need to bring anything less to the floor.

The congressional fight over the status of 11 million undocumented immigrants

Isn't it interesting that the count has dropped from 13 million to 11 million. Just think, by this time next month we'll only have to worry over 9 million. That's almost as interesting as pretty little names for illegals such as "immigrants" and "undocumented immigrants".

I would argue with a liberal that illegals take away aide and make it harder for us to take care of those truly in need in our country.

If we don't shut down the border along with any type of plan, we will just get millions of new illegals who will undercut the newly minted "guests".

Meanwhile, this plan only says that the guests must stay out of trouble, nothing of past crimes and real background checks.

To me, it's a matter of inforcing the law. The lack of previous enforcement is no excuse for continued enforcement. Unless and until the law is changed it must be enforced. If we don't enforce the laws, soon we will have:

Congress persons refusing to stop and identify themselves when challenged by law enforcement officers and even striking the officer and claiming the officer was at fault,

former National Security Advisors smuggling classified documents out of the archives in their pants,

Soldiers falsely claiming multiple wounds so they can obtain 3 purple hearts and an early release from a combat zone,

Soldiers providing false testimony before Congress about supposed atrocities that never happened,

Prominent politicians killing automobile passengers and not only not attempting to rescue the victim, but refusing to report the crime for hours,

Commander-in-chiefs debating the meaning of "is" in order to avoid the truth while under oath,

Governor's wives receiving $100,000 payoffs thinly disguised as futures trades,

Presidents selling Top Secret missile technology to the Chinese for illegal campaign contributions,...

Well, you get my drift.

This is disgusting. The only way these people should earn legal status is by leaving the country. My wife and I have been waiting years for our green card applications to be processed and our lawyer finally receive the application receipt. If these illegals get to adjust their status, they are noting more than law breaking line jumpers and will make the processing times even longer for those of us following the law! It is not fair.
