Nashville, TN (LifeNews.com) -- In an abortion debate long considered a "women's issue," the pain that men feel about a past abortion is often lost in the shuffle. But millions of men who may have prompted or agreed with their partner's decision to have an abortion often face regret years later. Longtime country music singer Kenny Rogers, known for his romantic touch and everyman approach, highlights a father's abortion pain in the title track from his latest album, Water and Bridges.
The album has a 67 year-old Rogers, whose hits span the last several decades, looking back on life.
Though the tune isn't about him, Rogers told CNN that "Water and Bridges" is "really about choices you make when you're young that you pay for when you're old."
"It's an interesting -- it starts off with a young couple who have an abortion," Rogers explained. "And the guy says, 'If a father could hold his son, I could undo what's been done, but I guess everyone is living with water and bridges.'"
Dr. Wayne Brauning, the founder of Men's Abortion ReCovery, knows many men who feel the pain of an abortion that occurred during their relationship with a woman.
"Men have told me that they knew they were guilty of getting the woman pregnant, of pressuring her to get an abortion, or of not coming to the rescue of the child," Brauning writes.
"Participating in an abortion always produces real guilt before God in the person who is responsible for the decision to take the life of the child," he explains.
In the Rogers song, the father relates a common story for many men involved in an abortion decision: "I was young, so was she. Life didn't stay a mystery for very long. We could do no wrong."
"Then she called, said she was late, So we took a little drive upstate an' took care of that. Yeah, just took care of that," the father says.
Expressing his regret, the father explains, "But now I'm longin' back at some of my decisions ... it's much too late to change."
Rogers didn't write the song -- it was penned by country music songwriter Craig Wiseman who found his music talent arranging and transposing songs at church camp so everyone could sing along.
''I'm not a songwriter. I'm just a writer," Wiseman said once. "You observe the stuff everybody observes -- what makes people point at the radio and go, 'Exactly!' 'Man, that's just how it was.'''
Rogers likes "Water and Bridges" because it fits in with his venerable look back on life.
Explaining to CNN about the song and why he liked it, he said, "Music should do one of three things: it should make you laugh, make you cry, or make you think."
Dr. Brauning tells men who have been a party to an abortion to actively grieve and express the pain and emotional trauma related to it
"Don't hold back. The reason for this sorrow is genuine and profound," he said.
Kenny is still alive?
(Denny Crane: "I Don't Want To Socialize With A Pinko Liberal Democrat Commie. Say What You Like About Republicans. We Stick To Our Convictions. Even When We Know We're Dead Wrong.")
pissant is still alive?
No, they didn't kill Kenny..........
Sounds like this song should have been about Ted Kennedy.
Interesting post: abortion song hits c/w.
No
I would like to hear more about this. Our society has marginalized men when it comes to children and the only word I can think of for that is tragedy-- how men are kept away from their children by devious ex-spouses, made to pay for children that ultimately aren't theirs, given minimal visitiation rights and shut out entirely from the abortion debate. As a result, many children are being denied the important influence of their father and it's messing them up. So sad.
I'm sure it will be nicely done by Kenny, too. The message needs to be spread.
I think Kenny Loggins is still alive too...
Is this the same Kenny Rogers that had his own toll-free '800' number so women could make free pornographic calls to him?

I would guess the fembots will be outraged at this song. To them, no man has any stake in an abortion, being merely an arbitrary sperm donor.
Heart breaking
I paid for three abortions. I am a murderer. I live with the shame every day of my life. God Bless the sin that drove me to the arms of my savior. He has forgiven me. I have not.
There is a whole issue here that the feminists don't want you to know. Men pressuring their girlfriends into an abortion. This happens more often than people think, especially with an older, possibly married man and an underage girl.
Which is why rap music is so important to me. I need to know about "hos", "b!tches", "booty" and "bling-bling". Word-up bro.
< /sarcasm=off>
LOL!
I was profoundly disappointed in McGraw for that.
I've never heard that song, but I just googled the lyrics, and it seems like something that has been a realistic situation for a lot of people. Why are you disappointed in him for the song?
His love and forgiveness is powerful, is it not?
Please FreepMail me if you want on or off my Pro-Life Ping List.
I agree with this thought, I find it a sad commentary on a society that has really devalued life and the family.
I've got a son that never came.
One that flew kites and arrow-planes.
One that danced in the springtime rains.
Don't know why or who's to blame.
But I've got a son that never came.
Bullfrogs and butterflies he'll never see.
He'll stroll through an open field, but not with me.
There was a time his heart beat strong.
It beat with rhythm as in a song.
And to me his love belonged.
Don't know why or what went wrong.
But there was a time his heart beat strong.
It's left in my mind and my heart will tease.
There's no love in my life for my son and me.
Before I had a chance to fight.
They took my son up a flight.
To a room to take his life.
Don't know why I had no rights.
Before I had a chance to fight.
Then five months early they stole him from his womb.
Laid him in a corner and watched him die in his tomb.
But for one split second I thought I heard him cry...
"I'm gonna have to leave you now. I love you Dad. Goodbye."
Mission9,
Pleae check your 'new posts to you' section for a private message.
The whole abortion debate in the '70s and '80s and '90s was based on lies whether from Hugh Hefner or NOW.
However He WANTS you to forgive you, as He has thrown your sin "as far as the East is from the West" and remembers no more and that is why He went to the cross, to forgive us sinners
If I can forgive you, than you can forgive yourself, check your FRMail
:-)
Very well said.
Turning about and following His path is what you must focus upon now, to help save those whom we can by speaking out against this evil. I too have bridges so painful to remember(I worked for a company promoting early abortifacisnt devices and even paid for two early abortions years ago), but Christ has cleaned the slate for me and I truly believe I shall some where/when meet those two children. Until then this blessing of life He grants to me will serve to speak out for those who cannot speak out themselves for their survival. (See my tagline, brother. For further discussion, if you so desire, please freepmail me.)
Thank you.
God bless you.
Who wrote it? very touching
Yeah, but his face is pumped so full of butt fat, or something, that it looks like it is about to explode. I assume one of those quack plastic surgeons who keep ruining women's lips got hold of Kenny's cheeks and went nuts.
I don't understand why people can't just let nature take its course.
Kenny Rogers?
The chicken guy?
Not really, the song is about someone expressing regret. This would not include Kennedy.
There is counseling available for women at Crisis Pregnancy centers. I believe they would help men, too. Many of the women grieve and feel quilty for years. Counseling can help. You do have to go through a grieving process. I am glad you found your Savior and hope you can find peace to forgive yourself.
Pro-Life Bump
Sounds like "Red Ragtop" to me.
I know it's a different situation, but I lost a baby 8 weeks ago because of a miscarriage and your song made me think of him. I thought it was beautiful.
Life imitating art...
This year at the March for Life in D.C., many men gave their testimonies... it was amazing and you really hurt for them. I was down in D.C. over the weekend and spent time with my friend who's over Silent No More there; I asked her what there was for men out there, there's a lot of groups and services coming out of everywhere... and it's about time. When I get a full list together, I will post and ping you guys to it.
It is good that you have not deceived yourself with euphemisms and excuses, but remember that Jesus died so you could be "free indeed." I will pray for you.
I am sorry for your loss. Prayers up.
Thank you, sir. I'm doing better now, and we're working on another baby! (to be due in January..)
Of course, 'Lucille' is better with the additional lyrics.
"You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille"
*You b!tch, you s!ut, you wh@re*
