CARACAS, April 4 (Xinhua) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said his country is ready to buy Russian-built fighter jets, as the United States refuses to supply spare parts for its F-16 jets.
At a military ceremony on Monday, Chavez expressed his appreciation for Russia's help, saying Venezuela will buy fighter jets from Russia and "keep them here to protect this land."
He also thanked his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin for approving the sale of 33 military helicopters and 100,000 AK-47 assault rifles to Venezuela.
Chavez also blamed Washington for forbidding Brazilian manufacturers from selling training aircraft to his country on grounds they use U.S. technology.
Despite the setbacks, Chavez said "nothing and nobody will stop us from making our country's armed forces stronger."
Relations between Venezuela and the United States have been deteriorating in recent years. Caracas has accused Washington of backing an abortive coup to overthrow Chavez in April 2002.
Add that to the million man militia with AK-47s and his land should be safe from those pesky Guyanans for a long time to come.

Exactly . He is still the nations resources from its citizens to buy weapons he ahs no need for, He is not under any threat from any country close to him and if the US threatens him he is dead meat anyway. All of these tin-pot dictator asswipes buy weapons with money they could use to help their poor. they could be truly great instead of blown up toads in their own minds. It pitiful and sad, and yet they elected this POS.

I'm guessing that this clown is buying all this second-hand junk not necessarily to go to war against us but to use against his own people when they get fed up with his BS or against neighboring Colombia.

Oh yeah, der hey!! Don'tcha just know that all of that sand did wonders for the "survivability" of those aircraft! Saddam may have been many things......but the "sharpest knife in the drawer" was not one of them.

Hugo Chavez is supposed to take delivery of much more modern Russian equipment soon, and lots of it. Worse yet, he is going to be able to build more of it.
Build more of what? Firearms would be about it at present. At the rate that he is going, some of his neighbours may "deal with him" before we do anything.
Russian aircraft are world class, and their air-to-air missiles are outstanding.

In Russia, there is almost no difference between Russian and enemy army, at least enemy army doesn't pretend they are on the side or Russian people..
Army in Russia is turned in two 2 years in prison for soldiers and slave labor for even junior officers(!) - General's dacha construction, etc. AWOLs are in 1,000s, there is no money, no fuel, no oil, no tanks, no planes, 3 submarines and couple hundred ICBM that still work..
Officers are busy trying to make money on a side, soldiers are left without supervision to torture younger ones..
