Terri Schiavo's Former Husband Attacks Tom DeLay After Resignation

Clearwater, FL (LifeNews.com) -- The feud between retiring pro-life Congressman Tom DeLay and Terri Schiavo's former husband Michael is not as old as the legal battle with Terri's family, but intense nonetheless. After DeLay made an announcement that he is retiring his Congressional seat, Michael released a statement attacking him.

Schiavo claimed "there's no question " that DeLay retired in part because he supposedly didn't want to face voters in November after having sided with the Schindler family against Michael's desire to kill Terri.

"After what he did to Terri and me, he no longer deserved the public trust that he had been given," Michael said, applauding DeLay's decision to step down from public office.

“I hope Mr. DeLay's actions in the Congress and the political costs associated with it will be a warning to other lawmakers that Congress just does not belong in the personal and private lives of Americans," Michael threatened.

After Circuit Court Judge George Greer finalized his order allowing Michael to euthanize Terri and state and federal courts refused to review the decision, DeLay said the judges who abrogated Terri's right to live would be held responsible.

"The time will come for the men responsible for this to answer for their behavior," DeLay said at the time, adding that the House "will look at an arrogant and out of control judiciary that thumbs its nose at Congress and the president."

Later DeLay apologize for the strong words but maintained his position that the courts gave the Schindler family the shaft in their legal efforts to save her life.

DeLay's remarks earned him Michael Schiavo's ire and Terri's former husband placed him at the top of the list for lawmakers to be defeated when he announced the creation of a new political action committee in December.

The PAC will target pro-life lawmakers who sided with the Schindlers. The PAC is expected to oppose pro-life Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum's election and also targets President Bush and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist on its web site.

The Schindler family, meanwhile, has set up a new organization to help disabled people like Terri receive appropriate medical care and treatment.

There are many reasons, far to numerous to mention, why this particular case garnered attention, one of them being Terri Schindler was neither braindead, in a coma or pvs.

To deliberately starve and dehydrate such people to death is a horrible offense and one worthy of our attention not only for the precious person Terri was, but also for the precious people who will suffer because of the ramifications of this case in the future. Namely, that people who are less and less sick and disabled will be mercifully (sarcasm) put to death. As Bill Crystal said, it wasn't even close.

BTW, Karen Ann Quinlan who truly was comatose was permitted to live out her natural live span, as she should have been.

I'm sure that some who resort to that sort of rhetoric actually believe it. Most though use it as an expression of emotional frustration, reflecting an inability to objectively discuss an obviously complex issue. I lost count years ago of how many people have been labeled as such. Go to DU and you can find dozens of such references. Here at FR, it's quite common to label even posters as Nazis. Even Jeb Bush, when he finally gave up on the Schiavo case was hit with that label. And never mind Judge Greer, a Christian and a conservative....

Fresh Samples and Numbed Detachment: Johann Kremer

The same was true of Dr. Johann Paul Kremer, who had intense career goals he attempted to achieve in Auschwitz. He was fifty-nine years old when he arrived there in August 1942, and thus belonged to an older generation than most camp doctors. Since 1935 an anatomy professor at the University of Münster, he was the only university professor to serve as an SS camp doctor.

Kremer had a long-standing research interest in problems of starvation, which he pursued by seeking debilitated inmates selected for death, whom he later termed “the proper specimens.” After he had a patient “placed on the dissection table,” where he took a history focused on weight and weight loss, an SS orderly injected phenol into the person's heart: “I stood at a distance from the dissection table holding jars, ready for the segments [organs] cut out immediately after death … segments of the liver, spleen and pancreas.” On some occasions, Kremer arranged to examine these patients or have them photographed prior to their murder. We may say that he made maximally pragmatic use of the death factory for his own scientific aims. Dr. Jan W. told how, if Kremer spotted a prisoner whose cranial shape seemed unusual, or who interested him in any way, he would order that prisoner photographed and injected with phenol for his collection of “fresh corpse samples of liver and other organs,” and concluded that “Kremer looked upon the prisoners as so many rabbits.”

Kremer was imprisoned for ten years in Poland, and again tried back home in Münster, where he was sentenced to another ten years, considered already served. He died in 1965.

“Kremer looked upon the prisoners as so many rabbits.” That would be an improvement over what we're seeing today. Some of today's medical community looks upon them as so many rutabagas.

People keep getting indignant over the comparisons between medicalized killing in U.S. hospitals today, and medicalized killing in German hospitals in the 1930s and '40s. Yet their indignation starts and ends with the name "Nazi." They never seem to have any objection to Nazi practices. It's only the name they object to. I don't understand how they can find the name objectionable, when they agree to the practices and ideology that the name refers to. I find the name "Nazi" to be extremely offensive, because of what it stands for. Maybe those who agree with Nazi ideology, but are offended by the word, don't really know what the word means. Maybe they find it offensive because of some mythological interpretation of it. Maybe they really are unaware that the ideology they cling to is the same ideology the Nazis clung to. Maybe they have some warped view of who the Nazis were. They can't imagine the Nazis being so hated for carrying out practices they themselves support. So they assume the Nazis are hated for some other, mythical reason, that they can't even imagine. They just go along with hating the word "Nazi," because they've always been told Nazis were evil. Apparently, nobody ever told them what was evil about the Nazis, and now they don't want to admit that what was evil about them was the same ideology they themselves strongly support now.
