McCain responded by saying immigrants were taking jobs nobody else wanted. He offered anybody in the crowd $50 an hour to pick lettuce in Arizona.
Shouts of protest rose from the crowd, with some accepting McCain's job offer.
"I'll take it!" one man shouted.
McCain insisted none of them would do such menial labor for a complete season. "You can't do it, my friends."
Some in the crowd said they didn't appreciate McCain questioning their work ethic.

As a kid, I picked corn for less than a tenth of that.

That's $400 a day. But if I'm going to work like an illegal...NO TAXS!

Kind of shows what our elected leaders think of Americans doesn't it. Let's see we are too lazy to work and we wouldn't even work for $50.00/hr. What an ass. It's this type of thinking from our ELECTED leaders that has got this country where it is. No wonder they are spending billions on projects. They have to pay more than $50/hr to get us to work. What a crock of crap. This man will never be president IMO.

50 dollars an hour in Wash DC is lower middle class (after taxes).

In 1979, during summer break in college I steamed cleaned the inside of garbage trucks for $2.90 an hour. That was the minimum wage then. It was without a doubt the worst job I ever had. Even worse than shearing sheep. All day long in 100+ West Texas heat, in a biohazard suit, smelly, soupy, foul water up to my ankles inside those trucks.

Economic idiots say things like this: "...immigrants were taking jobs nobody else wanted".
Immigrants accept wages few others would accept.
It's not the same thing. Economic idiots think that it is.
Without immigrants to take lower wages, wages would have to rise, and the price of some stuff would be a little bit higher. Big fricking deal. Meanwhile, economic idiots think that the world would end.
Boil it down and it's hard to escape the conclusion that (unless he's simply an economic idiot) poor millionaire John McCain doesn't wanna hafta pay a little bit more for his lettuce, so he's cool with letting people come here under dangerous shady conditions to eke out a second-class-citizen illicit existence picking lettuce so's he can buy it a little bit cheaper.
The truly ironic thing is that the preceding paragraph is supposedly the "liberal" point of view.
To: lauriehelds

If 50.00 an hr is lower middle class we are not teaching people how to handle money. You can be a millionaire when you retire investing 20% of your pay for 40 years on 15.00/hr

McCain is high. In the Navy, I spent a summer sorting through garbage on the weather deck because we were underway and the waste from the mess decks had to be separated. Plastics sunk, paper burned, food mulched and poured overboard. They gave us latex gloves and set us to work digging manually through every bag of garbage off the mess decks. For E3 pay!
In the afternoon, we dug hot ash out of a huge metal bin (boxcar size, I'm talking) with shovels. In 110 degree heat, near the equator. That BSing SOB, I wish I'd been there. I'd have given him an earful he'd never have forgotten.

Wash DC is a very expensive place to live. 50 an hour is about 30 after tax which is 240 per day or about 70,000 which is not that good when a very modest house is over 500,000.

Immigration, trade policy, gun control, and abortion are all issues that most Americans can agree with. Most Americans want secure borders, fair trade, no gun control, and tight controls on abortion if not out right outlawing it. Funny how the two parties split these issues. One would almost think that the powers that be got together and decided how best to split the American people. and at the same time keep themselves in power. Show me a leader who is for all the above and he/she has my vote.

My husband worked in the strawberry fields and the bean fields. Ridiculous to think Americans won't do the work. They did it in the past and they would do it again.
OTOH... who wouldn't feel a bit intimidated to ask for work in a predominantly (illegal) spanish speaking workplace? I know I would feel intimidated, and have worked in factories as a sales rep where the office (spanish speaking) ladies would talk about me in their language while I was in the same room! I was La Huera (sp?), I had a basic understanding of spanish and spoke fairly fluent french, so could understand alot of what was said (some-if not all- was not too kind). A younger person would definitely be intimidated. I was old enough to let it roll off my back - bunch of hens!

Your shearing sheep comment reminded me of my visit to a relative's farm in Idaho in the early 70's... the young high school age men in this area earned their living doing just that! What is going on in these pollutedticians heads? People in this country have been doing the work since the beginning and will do it until the end of time!

That's right. You see Mexicans have special muscles and skeletal structures, so they can do stoop labor all day and still walk upright to the store for some tortillas at the end of the day. I think blacks had some special characteristics like that for picking cotton, but they lost them when they moved up north. :^)

It's all in how you want to spend that money now isn't it. 20% of 70,000 is $14,000/yr (if you invest in a 401k or other tax deferred plan) it would be closer to $20,000 per year. If you invest this with no interest you have 800,000 in 40 yrs. With compound interest of say 6.73% (the rate on series I savings bonds) in 40 years you have 3.9million dollars. Now $3.9 million is not lower middle class. Like I said before we are not teaching our people how to handle money.

I was actually thinking about this idiot being the best of the bad choices. How wrong I was.
To: Proud Conservative2
Yes....however, the voters lately have given them amble evidence that we do not figure it out. What's the rate of defeat for an incumbent? I for the life of me do not understand why people continue to vote these idiots into office. It's my congressman and senators that are the problem. As much as your Congressman and Senator. It's time for a major change in Washington. We really need to vote these bums out then take away all their benefits after they leave office. they do not deserve any.

I wholeheartedly agree with you on this. We teach people to SPEND at an early age and then there is no looking back. Saving, managing money and basic investment should be mandatory teaching in grade school and or high school. Only thing regarding money I was taught in grade school was how to write a check.

Yes, same here. It was only on my own that I learned. I am not making the same mistake with my children. My 10 yr old is already a stock owner and picks his own stocks. However, at the same time children must learn that all that makes money is not good. Wall Street never learned this lesson and it is slowly killing our nation. Immigration is a case in point.
