NOPD officers under investigation for allegedly beating another officer's wife

Three white NOPD officers came under investigation Tuesday for allegedly beating the wife of fellow black NOPD officer.

In response, the NAACP has called for the Department of Justice to get involved.

Early Tuesday, just after midnight, Dulcie Scott said she heard a knock on her door and screams for help because her daughter-in-law was being beaten by police officers.

“I couldn’t believe it; it just didn’t make any sense so I opened the door and at that point I saw the officer pulling Joni by the hair. He was pulling her and he was knocking her against the police car and he was doing it over and over again. She was trying to tell him ‘I’m Officer Pratt’s wife,’” said Scott.

The victim was married to Officer Desmond Pratt, a ten year veteran of the New Orleans Police Department. Scott said they were trying to reach him when the officer who stopped his wife called for back up. She said two more officers arrived on the scene.

“One just walked in and punched her in the face and then she went down and then she falls down to the ground,” said Scott, who maintained it did not stop there and at one point an officer struck her as well.

“And then they all three were on top of her. All three were on top so I was yelling for them to stop so the main one came running after me and pushed me into the gutter and then he told me stop your mouth or you’ll be arrested too,” she said.

Police Chief Warren Reilly said the victim allegedly ran a stop sign at the intersection of Elysian Fields and Gentilly. He said the officer followed her to her home and at some point there was an altercation.

Reilly said the victim sustained a bruise to her face, a hairline fracture to her wrist, and a scratch across her forehead.

“She stated that it was three white NOPD officers,” said Reilly.

Reilly said an investigation was underway and if necessary there would be swift and severe action.

Meanwhile, Dulcie Scott’s brother Randolph Scott, who is Vice President of the NAACP, said he was surprised by what happened to his family but not shocked.

“It appears as though with the shrinkage of the police force that has occurred that we still have rogue police officers on the force and they still mean African-Americans harm in this city,” said Scott.

The victim in the case was arrested and charged with running a stop sign, resisting arrest, and battery on a police officer.

Reilly said in the last four months the department has fired 86 officers for neglect, battery, and abandonment.

You can't get a classier bunch than NOLA's municipal employees. From the mayor on down they are conscientious, efficient and courteous to a fault.

3 officers for 1 woman, hair pulling, banging against the car and punching in the face..... geeezzzz....

Is there a video clip?

Maybe a new Cadillac - via the Katrina benefits plan - would have helped relieve the situation.

LOL...here in Lafayette, our Chief of Police is currently under investigation by the State Police and Feds for some illegal wiretapping issues.

She was trying to tell him ‘I’m Officer Pratt’s wife...

That could be the key to the problem. If she was telling them that they couldn't arrest her because... or if she thought that she could get away with anything because...

On the other hand these may have just been three officers who hadn't beaten up any women recently and were overdue.

I think the NOPD strength post-katrina is about 1400. Not large for a big city with a very large port complex.

Like chilling old claret, beating another man's wife is rarely done in the best circles.

Dumb cop. You can get away with beating your own wife, not somebody else's.

Well...if we start off with that 100 to 200 fake bogus guys on the police payroll...add the 86 to it...then over half of the force is gone. The amusing thing is that alot of people who left...aren't coming back...and I don't see a reason to maintain a huge police force. By the time you figure in all the corruption there...going into NO isn't worth the hassle.

So from reading the responses to this post, I presume we are to believe this STORY hook, line and sinker? What a hoot! I thought we had an objective bunch here in FR but I guess if the story is salacious enough it must be true? I'm asking everyone who wants to believe this STORY to really just stop and think about the inconsistencies. Be objective! Hear and understand all the facts before casting your judgments. This reeks with doubt.

Begs the question:

How long have you been beating Pratt's wife?

I wonder whether we are all certain that they don't do the same kind of thing to white women who don't live in classy houses.

Last I read, statistics showed that more tickets were given to older white women than to other classes of people. I guess that the ticket giver is less apt to be endangered by leaning on them. I sincerely doubt that older white women are less law abiding than other people groups.

No, older white women pay the ticket and rarely take the issue to court. Excellent subjects under any form of government.

Resisting arrest is a losing battle that always leads to more charges. It is always easier to do what the cop says and then let your attorney fight the battles for you in court.
