The NYPD hate-crimes unit is probing a report that a white NYU student killed by a car in Harlem was fleeing a gang of black teenagers screaming "Get whitey!" sources said yesterday.
If the report proves true, the violence could turn out to be an eerie replay in reverse of the infamous 1986 Howard Beach murder, where a black man was chased into traffic and killed by a group of white bigots.
The 20-year-old student, John Broderick Hehman, died yesterday, six days after the attack.
The sources said Hehman might have been targeted as a soft mark for robbers after the teenage gang spotted the caring urban-studies major handing pocket change to a wheelchair- bound man near the corner of 125th Street and Park Avenue Saturday night.
The gang of youths, some of them as young as 11, had been smoking pot inside a nearby Popeye's fast-food eatery at 8:30 p.m. when they spotted Hehman walking by and then stopping to help the handicapped man.

The police were trying to determine why Mr. Hehman ran into the intersection, at 125th Street and Park Avenue. Witnesses told investigators that it appeared that Mr. Hehman was being chased by several young men, the law enforcement official said.
David Jones, a homeless man who sells used goods at the intersection, said he witnessed the accident, which took place about 8:30. "They were trying to beat him," he said. "Some kids were trying to beat him." Mr. Hehman, who ran east on 125th Street, turned south into the intersection, he said, and then was hit by the car, which the police said was a silver Mercedes-Benz.

NY Daily News also leaves out the race of the attackers and their victim as well as the "Get Whitey!" remarks.
And, of course, there's an obligatory reference to white racists killing a black man in Queen's in a similar fashion...
Ah, political correctness.
Hate Crime?
These young "youths of color" need Cynthia McKinney's attorney immediately.
"...the violence could turn out to be an eerie replay in reverse of the infamous 1986 Howard Beach murder, where a black man was chased into traffic and killed by a group of white bigots."
Really, now. We're to believe that this kid was the FIRST white person killed by those of another race since 1986?
Funny. Chai Vang was Hmong and he murdered six white hunters in cold blood also wounding a white woman and a white child in our state in 2004, and no one DARED whisper "Hate Crime."
What a bunch of cr@p.
Yes. Now we see the real damage McKinney does...by keeping the hate alive.
"had been smoking pot inside a nearby Popeye's fast-food"
???????????
It was my understanding that Vang may have been connected to another murdered hunter a couple years before due to the fact that it turned out the pick-up he drove matched that of another scene - but the press never made much of this either.
The blacks who killed the white man were "black teenagers"
The whites who killed the black man were "white bigots".
There's more to this story than reported. Wait for it...
Beat me to it. Nice catch, C.

Marisa Hehman said her brother is an urban-affairs student at NYU. "We're very distraught, very worried," she said. "This is our worst nightmare."
Their mother died of cancer six months ago, she added.
Which story, Harlem or WI?
The NYC story. It isn't complete.
Oh. I'm turning on my TV. How come I don't see wall-to-wall coverage of this? How come it's not on the crawlers? Why aren't they saying "stay tuned for the latest on the hate crime"?
I'm opening my paper. No headlines. No nothing. I expected to see screaming headlines "Racist attack in New York".
Nothing.
As always, the racist biased leftist-dominated newsentertainment media suppress things that don't bolster their agenda: that whites are the only racists.
Specific things you know?
"When someone says, 'You're in the wrong place, my friend', you'd better leave." --Bob Dylan
I don't know any specifics, but the story doesn't add up.
The one specific I do have is that I've been by that Popeye's chicken many times on my way to pick up take-out food. Nobody has ever bothered me, but it's definitely a "hang out."
Plus, this wasn't some kid off the bus from Iowa. He was a "city kid."
White kid dead? No hate crime here.
Move along, nothing to see here. Move along.
I think its more a matter of a corrupted inner city culture than a 'racial divide'. The inner cities are breeding grounds of all sorts of crime, and backwards ideas. They were 100 years ago too, when they were filled with European immigrants. 'Ghetto' culture just aggravates an already bad situation, though.
We need urban renewal projects that do more than throw money at the problem. Planting trees in Harlem won't stop this crime wave. Creating firm disciplinary systems, cracking down on crimes, imposing mandatory minimum sentences, rehabilitating and monitoring convicts, and condemning negative cultural influences will go a long way in lessening the problem.
Ultimately, though, the inner city communities need to want to change.
He may be a "city kid," but if he was roaming around 125 and Park after rush hour, he didn't have any street smarts.
Have you been in Harlem lately?
It's block by block now. Some blocks have million dollar brownstones on tree-lined streets. Other blocks remain less than appealing.
I drove through Harlem last Christmas, but only as a tourist on my way to somewhere else.
Anyways, my point is that a societal reaction and stricter crime control laws would go a long way towards correcting the problems of inner cities communities.
I worked the streets, back yards and basements of "Dark Valley" all through the 90's. Day and night. This kid didn't have a chance.
As a point of interest, last year I got off the FDR on 125th and didn't hit a red light on Fifth until 60th Street at the Sherry-Netherlands. A personal best. Nothing to do with this thread, just bragging.
Except for law enforcement and basic social services there's very little that can be done for communities. They evolve naturally.
That's actually pretty impressive.
And yeah, I agree. Although I think the evolution of communities can be directed, as long as community leaders are willing to make sacrifices, roll up their sleeves and get to work.
A White kid got stabbed at the Mass Ave. Orange Line Station in Boston. They were heard to have said "Shank the Honkey". No Hate Crime was charged.
I don't believe in "community leaders" as an effective force for change. I believe in the state of the economy, etc.
Harlem is safer than it was 10 or 15 years ago, but it's not "strolling around oblivious like in the 'burbs" safe.
By the end of Blooming-idiot's eight years, NYC will be close to the state of lawlessness that reined prior to Rudy.
Police Commission Kelly is no Commissioner Bratton.
Move along folks...no race crime here. Every WHITE American has to be aware of the fact that black people can't be racist. In addition, Rep. Cynthia McKinney recently pointed out the fact that black people do not commit crimes. They are just caught being black.
sarc/off
ticked off
Kelly was there under Rudy, too. And Bratton had lots of help.
Crime is a very large complex problem. People who won't to find a single hero in reducing crime in NYC are pretty much out of luck.
won't = want
"...but it's not 'strolling around oblivious like in the 'burbs' safe."
You mean like this kind of "'burbs safe?" Like in, say, Ohio? ;)
Man shoots teen over lawn
An Ohio man, who neighbours say was devoted to his manicured lawn, was charged with shooting dead a 15-year-old boy who apparently walked across his yard. Charles Martin called authorities on Sunday afternoon, saying calmly: "I just killed a kid. I've been harassed by him and his parents for five years. Today just blew it up." Larry Mugrage was shot in the chest. Martin, 66, allegedly told police he had had problems with neighbours walking on his lawn.

I heard the guy was smoking pot in the local Popeyes chicken.
People are fooled by the drop in crime in NYC. The crime drop is nice, but hey, it's still NY and you still have to pay attention.
Of course, they will dig into some history when it fits their agenda. Otherwise mum's the word when it comes to making any lib/"protected minority" look bad.
I'd be one of those headlines if I ever moved to the burbs. One day I'd just snap and beat someone senseless when they wanted to talk to me about lawn care or gas mileage or a sale at Home Depot.
"He was a quiet guy," said a neighbor who didn't want to be identified. "But he kept asked, over and over again, why he couldn't get Thai food delivered and he kept wandering down into peoples' basements, looking for a subway."
I don't buy it.
And what about that "unfortunate incident" in Wichita,KS a few years back? Where a groups of black decided to attack some whites a la Charles Mason? Boy, did that story disappear from the headlines PDQ!
It was going on at this location when I was working in the area. I see no reason why it should have stopped.
You can't smoke in Popeye's.
And you heard this where?
That was a joke, connecting smoking pot in Popeyes to crime.
Can't and prohibited are two entirely different things.
As the MSM again points out.......the crimes were NOT the same: In this case the killers were "black teenagers", in the other case "WHITE BIGOTS". Even those of us in fly-over country can understand this.
Anytime a young white person is attacked in a minority neighborhood in NYC the cry goes up, "They were here to by drugs!"
Could this be the case now? Maybe, maybe not.
Perhaps the ME could put that question to rest.
So WHERE are the FEDS???
If the situation was reversed, Gonzlaz would have the FBI involved by now.
The truth rarely comes out or gets remembered in these things. Nobody remembers the whole story around the black kid who got chased in Queens. The truth is more complicated and more difficult to report.
