The Ed McMahon Solution for Illegal Aliens
Special to FreeRepublic ^ | 7 April 2006 | John Armor (Congressman Billybob)

Posted on 04/07/2006 10:01:04 AM PDT by Congressman Billybob

Decades ago, the Publishers Clearing House launched a campaign to give away $1 million with Ed McMahon and Dick Clark as spokesmen. In addition to the prize and fat payments to the sponsors, PCH had millions in costs for its advertising and direct mail. That campaign offers a solution to the illegal alien problem in the US today.

Some people wondered when the “Ed McMahon” campaign began, how that made good economic sense. I was working in direct mail advertising then. I knew exactly why it made sense. PCH were (and still are) spending tens of millions of dollars in order to give away money. But what were they getting in return?

They were getting accurate names and addresses where people currently live. Why? Well, if you wanted Ed McMahon to come to your door with a check for $1 million, wouldn’t you give your accurate name and address? Isn’t that exactly what the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) wants from all illegal aliens?

Consider how the publishing industry gathered correct names and addresses prior to the McMahon campaign. They hired hundreds of college students, put them at desks with hundreds of phones, and stacks of directories. Hour by hour they made thousands of calls to find people. And, since Americans move all the time, those addresses quickly became obsolete.

Now, consider the INS today. An excellent article by Michelle Malkin yesterday detailed the towering incompetence of many of the administrators of the INS. Her article is the capstone of a series which demonstrates that far from being able to find 12 million (or whatever million) illegal aliens in the US, today’s INS could not find its *ss in the shower if it used both hands.

So, take a leaf out of the Ed McMahon playbook. Instead of trying to find all those illegal aliens, why not give them every incentive to identify themselves? And, no, I am not suggesting cash prizes like the McMahon campaign.

Congress should pass a law that gives all illegal aliens 90 days (or so) to register with the INS by name, address, place of employment, etc.. Photographs, fingerprints and DNA swabs would be included, so there’s no question that folks are who they say they are.

What would be the incentive for aliens to register? The law would state that any illegal alien found inside the US after the period expired, who had not registered, would immediately be positively identified by fingerprints, etc., taken to the nearest US border, and dumped on the far side. That person would also be barred from ever seeking to enter the US again. That result would be placed beyond the power of the federal courts to interfere. And, it would happen regardless of time in the US, family status, jobs or children.

With strong incentives like that, the only illegal aliens to stay in the shadows and not register would be those actively involved in criminal activities, ordinary ones of robbery, drugs, etc., or extraordinary ones like smuggling more illegal aliens into the US. By their actions, the group of all illegal aliens would self-select out those who have no intention of living and working in the US while obeying its laws.

Coupled with this, of course, would be practical steps to close the US border to the invasion from Mexico. Build the fences. Complete the wall at San Diego. Man the border with both volunteers and professionals. The Minute Men are proving again, right now, that more eyes on the border mean less illegals coming in.

It currently looks like the Senate bill, providing amnesty for illegals, will not pass. Even if it does, it looks like the House – which is closer to the people and supposedly better represents their will – will kill the Senate bill if it reaches the House.

It’s insane to accept the idea that any group of people can forcibly change the laws of the US just by walking or wading across an unguarded border. The Constitution gives control of immigration to Congress. For decades, Congress has abdicated its responsibilities in this area. Congress has fiddled, while the flames of the “reconquest” lick higher and higher on the walls of the state capitols in Sacramento, Phoenix, Santa Fe, Austin and Tallahassee. And those flames are spreading to capitols as far from the border as Raleigh, Albany, and Denver.

Serious action, not another false, band-aid solution, is needed immediately. A nation which cannot control its borders, cannot control its destiny. And the Ed McMahon solution would help regain that control

This subject is a hot topic on FR now. Don't you wish your Congressman could come up with self-enforcing laws like this?

The Hispanic Challenge (To America) A MUST READ Samuel Huntington (Long But Good)

The Mexicans are unlike previous immigrants. This definitely needs to be read by everyone at least once! It should be linked on pertinent immigration threads. Here's an interesting link about Samuel Huntington:

"Strangely enough, despite the fact that he was buddies with Henry Kissinger at Harvard, he is registered as a member of the Democratic Party, and has written foreign policy speeches for Adlai Stevenson, Hubert Humphrey, and Jimmy Carter."

The "...and a miracle happens here..." portion of the equation.

FWIW, I rec'd the following proposal & annotated same in red

Illegal Aliens

  1. Babies Born on U.S. Soil – Eliminate automatic U.S. citizenship and benefit eligibility.
Revert to (pre 1965) benefits/declaration - on 18th birthday. Prior to that, they must live where parents legally reside.

  1. Free Medical Services – No longer provided.
Illegal per USSC (emergency svcs). Emergency Rms cannot pick & choose which svcs to provide/treat cuz of
scum bag lawyers file class action against hospitals.

  1. Employment – Provide corporate employers a worker alternative, prisoners (convicted criminals) to do the work other U.S. Citizens do not want to do (dig ditches, pick grapes, etc.).  These prisoners would include white-collar criminals.  (See Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County in Arizona for his chain gang approach.)  If employers reject the new source of workers and continue to hire illegal aliens, prosecute them.
Create a Fed. registry for: 1. employers (seeking immigrant labor) &
                                                2. a (2) tiered registry for employees
                                                       a. those only seeking work (cannot switch to b. for 10 years)
                                                       b. those seeking work & eventual residency
registry = retinal scan, dna, fingerprint, pic. If b., add same for dependents
                                                 consider merits of RFID

  1. Public School Education – All classes taught in English (except foreign language courses).  It has already been proven this is the best approach for the advancement of a child residing in the United States.  U.S. citizenship of each parent must be verified when a child is enrolled, using forms printed in English.  Non-taxpaying illegal alien children would not be allowed to attend public schools.
Simple - require a SS# for ea. student (as control/reporting/audit mechanism)

  1. Language – English.  Immediately stop catering to the illegal alien lack of interest in learning the English language to better blend in to society. U.S. citizenship requires an understanding of English. Publications in non-English will not be govt. supported. (work w/ community/religious groups to promote ESL)

    6.   build medium security prison(s) in Mexico to house low risk prisoners convicted in US.   Enforce spot/surprise checks by
US reps. to ensure compliance --> Mexican prisoners in lower cost facilities.

    7.  Immediately, eliminate any targeted welfare/benefits/social services.

    8.  Immediately, establish a federal data base where employers can get (real time) phone &/or web yes/no verification of
        name/SS# for prospective employees

That's a great idea. With all due respect, I don't think the general public, and certainly not our Congress, are ready to back strong sanctions against the illegals themselves. In a perfect world ... but in our world we still have the MSM.

Who has a greater moral and ethical obligation to obey US law? Illegal alien foreign nationals or American citizens? We know exactly where every US employer is and it's time to stop feeling sorry for them. The laws to sanction them are on the books now. There are great sanctions, and reasonable protections as well, for employers in H.R. 4437. Force the Dems to drop the controversial "felony for being illegal" provision (that the Dems inserted) and put the onus on the employers. If the jobs dry up the illegal aliens will self-deport.

The Senate, House and White House are seriously confused about what is at issue and what is at stake here.

The issue of a guest worker program is completely separate from the issue of illegal aliens.

We have a guest worker program. It may need to be reformed but illegal aliens are those who have not applied to be guest workers. There are 11 million of them. (or more)The only thing needing reform concerning illegal aliens is to enforce the existing laws respecting their presence and their employment here. And border security.

Border security is the number one problem in this debate. The flood of illegal aliens is a major factor in relation to our lack of border security but it is only one factor. There is also a matter of national security in a time of war and in an age when terrorists have set their sights on inflicting mass destruction on our society.

After the issues of border security and millions of illegal foreign nationals on our soil the matter of guest workers is very small. Until the first two problems are thoroughly and firmly addressed the guest worker issue should not even be discussed.

The President the Senate and the House need to get that message with unambiguous resolve.

Border security! No employment for illegal aliens! Immigration and a guest worker program are separate issues from the above.

Actually, no. Congress has full power to withdraw the jurisdiction of the federal courts to deal with any subject, if they so choose. As I've written at length before, Congress has exercised this very power at least seven times before, the last time at the behest of Li'l Tommy Daschle (remember him? he was in all the papers) when he was trying to salvage his Senate seat against John Thune.

If Congress develops the chops to pass a real bill to control illegal immigration, it should also have the chops to take the federal courts out of the deportation loop.

You can purchase accurate name and address data files from the United States Post Office.

Updated regularly, they are also verified on a daily basis by the route's post man.

Somehow, I don't think the Post Office information includes whether the person is who he says he is, whether he's a citizen of another country, whether he's on the lam for any crimes, details like that which the gummint needs about the illegal aliens. LOL.

And, I bet a dollar to a donut that the Post Office doesn't have a clue about the 20 Hispanics who are living in two trailers, just a half-mile from my house. LOL.

I think it would be funny and instructive if the companies who hire illegals were required to participate in a privitized social security plan for illegals, setting aside 10% of wages paid.

Within a decade, their retirement plans would look better than most Americans.

I don't recall Dick Clark acting as a spokesman for Publishers' Clearing House. He did co-star with Ed McMahon on TV's Bloopers and Practical Jokes, though, so maybe you confused the two roles.

I like it a lot. Those people who claim that we can't just deport 11 million people are only partially right. We can't deport them all at once. But we can deport some and reduce the problem by attrition over the course of 30 years. How? Easy...

1.) Strengthen border security to the point where the flow of illegals is a trickle. I don't care how much is spent to do it, just get it done.

2.) Implement the Armor plan whereby illegals must register and any who don't will be summarily deported if they are subsequently caught.

3.) Of the illegal group who registers, any who are subsequently convicted of any crime while in the US are deported.

4.) Children born to the illegal group will be American citizens, but those illegals who registered can NEVER become American citizens and can NEVER vote without leaving the US and getting at the end of the line.

5.) Those who attempt to vote and are caught will be deported, no questions asked.

6.) The number of legal immigrants allowed into the US on work visas is expanded significantly.

Assuming we keep up our border security over the next 30 years, the number of registered illegals will begin to go away by attrition.
