The Catholics: A Cardinal's Campaign (Mahony's Illegal Immigration)
Newsweek ^ | 4/10/2006 | Jennifer Ordoņez

Posted on 04/07/2006 6:05:45 PM PDT by petkus

Cardinal Roger Mahony of Los Angeles is speaking out against crackdowns on illegals. How far will his voice carry?

April 10, 2006 issue - Cardinal Roger M. Mahony, the spiritual leader of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles, spent last week at the Vatican, where he and other Catholic leaders helped select new cardinals. But his thoughts strayed back home, where more than 500,000 people—mostly Latinos, and many from his flock—marched through the streets of downtown L.A. protesting anti-immigration legislation. "I saw the march from Rome, on CNN," Mahony told NEWSWEEK. "I was thrilled. Not only by the numbers, but by the fact that it was peaceful and sent a strong message to Washington. It put a human face on the issue."

How can we send a strong message to Mahony that he was not elected to any political office?

============ Mahony is urging parishioners not to let the demonstrations get out of hand. He is against plans by some community leaders to stage a work, school and consumer boycott on May 1. "Boycotting," he says, "will create a very negative atmosphere."

=======================

Does Mahony think that by leading illegal immigration revolt that he will be canonized a saint?

But color me doubtful.

A friend of mine has said that whatever Mahoney stands for just "follow the money".

So Mahoney says demonstrations are good, just don't let them get outta hand. OTOH comsumer boycotting and work and school boycotting are bad, will create a negative atmosphere.

Yeah, if you call burning the American flag, disrupting and blocking traffic, and 'demanding' legal status peaceful.

They are criminals, Cardinal, but I guess if they put something in the collection plate every Sunday, you can overlook that.

Mahony's an ass, but where do you get off tarnishing one out of six Americans that live here? From FreeRepublic to Silicon Valley and Ronald Reagan, the very best things this nation has brought the world in the past century have come from California.

Shall we talk about how stupid people are in Florida? Or how about we just drop it now?

This type of baloney is the logical result of so much of Christendon being infiltrated over several decades by liberal secular humanists, who have reduced (and I mean reduced) Christianity to nothing more than activisim for the entire range of left wing social causes. What Mahony is espousing has nothing whatever to do with Christ, or the Gospel. This guy should stick his nose out of politics and devote his time and efforts to preaching the message of Salvation through Jesus Christ - which is what he's supposed to be doing, if he even believes in it - instead of evangelizing for the left-wing political religion in which he has apparently placed his faith.

Mahoney has convinced himself that this is like WWII when everyone sat back and didn't object to shipping the Jews out of town .... when all we're asking is that they be sent HOME.

Someone should remind the good Rev how Jesus was born ... by his parents going to Bethlehem to partake in the census, following the law of the land at the time.

Right.

"In 2004, California taxpayers received only 79 cents in federal expenditures for every dollar in federal taxes."

The Tax Foundation

Translation: 21 cents of every federal tax dollar paid by Californians is given to other states.

Always expecting the rest of the country California to bail them out.

There. Fixed it ;-)

If it is peaceful and is ok, would it be proper and ok then to soundly protest his political views in the front of his church by concerned citizens. Civil disobedience is a cause for protest in any moral sense.

I think those foreign invaders hurt their cause rather than helped it. I used to be slightly sympathetic to them but not at all anymore. They are very arrogant. Just like Mahony.

Cardinals and bishops like Mahony are so thick they are in another world. Some of them (not all) have lost their moral compasses.

Look, I love California. But I get mad at what a bad situation it has come to. I began teaching there in 1966 when it had the best schools in the country. Admit it. You have taken the best and ruined it. I watched the power crisis and it was shocking how disfunctional the political system was and is. If I can make a harsh comment that shocks you into fixing what is broken instead of deluding yourselves into thinking that you lead the planet, then I will.

Up front I will say that I am Catholic.

The I will say that this loon does not speak for me or anyone that I know.

In the Bible (I know, Catholics read the misslette not the Bible!) Christ has said to "Render unto Caesar what is Caesar and render unto God what is Gods."

No mere words. It has serrated Church and State before the concept was even thought of. Stay true to your faith and follow the laws of the land. In the 16th century Ecclesiastical scholars determined that the Word of God allows for mans law and Gods Law.

The confused Cardinal seeks to impose his ideas over mans law and His Law.

Tonight Sensenbrenner was on with Lou Dobbs and the subject of Mahoney's attempt to encourage violation of the law by encouraging his faithful to aid illegal aliens. BUT - GET THIS! Lou pointed out that in 1986 the United States Catholic Conference urged all aliens NOT to enter the United States illegally! So, it appears Mahoney is not only pandering to potential supporters of his archdiocese -- but he's a hypocritical flip-flopper!

I too am a Catholic.

I have been very disturbed by the actions of the Cardinal Mahony and all of the other Bishops who have decided to follow him like lemings!

I don't know what to do or say to effect the actions of Cardinal Mahony or to show the fallacy of his actions. From the priest to the Cardinals, they don't care what the ordinary Catholics think.

Look at the pedophilia situation with priest and how long it was covered up by the BISHOPS who think that they are above God's law and MAN'S LAW!

My usual suggestions is to BOYCOTT the collection basket but I am only one person.

DO you have any suggestions on what might be done to drive home a message to these guys?

For sure, you have no idea how furious most people in the country are to see your demonstations. Ignore the feedback and be snotty. That is what we have come to expect from delusional, immoral and illegal Californians. You put your faces on celluloid and send the images round the world and then won't accept the consequences. You send batty, emotional women to the senate to represent you and expect to be taken seriously. It just doesn't work that way.

Without a strong and prosperous America the very heart of the Catholic Church and ALL other non Muslim Churches would be in mortal danger. That's "MORTAL DANGER" as in real danger of death.

This is a excerpt for a web site sponsored by the ."
Diocese of Las Angeles:

The Church recognizes the right of sovereign nations to control their territories but rejects such control when it is exerted merely for the purpose of acquiring additional wealth. More powerful economic nations, which have the ability to protect and feed their residents, have a stronger obligation to accommodate migration flows. (Page 15, Paragraph 36)

This statement sounds like socialistic(maybe a little Karl Marx) or effort to dictate to the USA its laws.

Would Mahony go to China or Russia and attempt to dictate to them????????

You have taken the best and ruined it

What do you mean "you"? Where was the Federal government when the illegals were pouring accross California's borders? You lived here, what did you do? I bet as little as everyone else.

When a few Border Patrol agents made arrests last year, Bush sent out his representative to tell them to stop. When California passed an initiative to deny illegals benefits, the 9th circus court of appeals overturned it. What happened when it was appealed to a higher court? Where was our leadership? The country has turned a blind eye to our problems and pointed a finger. Now that the illegals are spreading out accross the nation, all of a sudden it is an issue. When we have asked for monetary help from the federal government, Californians have never recieved as much as was contributed.

Mahoney harbors pedophiles, where is the FBI? Mahoney harbors illegals, where is the federal government? The rotting begins from the top down. Mahoney has gotten away with murder for years and everyone has turned a blind eye. Our problems are the country's problems and it will get a lot worse before it gets better.

The rest of the country is as much to blame for the trashing of the Golden State as the residents.
