Cardinal Roger Mahony of Los Angeles is speaking out against crackdowns on illegals. How far will his voice carry?
April 10, 2006 issue - Cardinal Roger M. Mahony, the spiritual leader of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles, spent last week at the Vatican, where he and other Catholic leaders helped select new cardinals. But his thoughts strayed back home, where more than 500,000 peoplemostly Latinos, and many from his flockmarched through the streets of downtown L.A. protesting anti-immigration legislation. "I saw the march from Rome, on CNN," Mahony told NEWSWEEK. "I was thrilled. Not only by the numbers, but by the fact that it was peaceful and sent a strong message to Washington. It put a human face on the issue."

============ Mahony is urging parishioners not to let the demonstrations get out of hand. He is against plans by some community leaders to stage a work, school and consumer boycott on May 1. "Boycotting," he says, "will create a very negative atmosphere."
=======================
Does Mahony think that by leading illegal immigration revolt that he will be canonized a saint?
I dono.. Do saints wear orange jumpsuits - NAC? I believe NO one in the USA is above or below the Law.. Does he really want to test it that far?
I guess if St. Paul and St. Francis of Assisi could turn their lives around, anything's possible.
But color me doubtful.
A friend of mine has said that whatever Mahoney stands for just "follow the money".
So Mahoney says demonstrations are good, just don't let them get outta hand. OTOH comsumer boycotting and work and school boycotting are bad, will create a negative atmosphere.
Yeah, if you call burning the American flag, disrupting and blocking traffic, and 'demanding' legal status peaceful.
They are criminals, Cardinal, but I guess if they put something in the collection plate every Sunday, you can overlook that.
Revoke his visa?
Typical California boob. Can't solve any problem themselves. Always expecting the rest of the country to bail them out.
Someone should remind the good Cardinal that someone more important than him said, "Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's. . ."
Mahony's an ass, but where do you get off tarnishing one out of six Americans that live here? From FreeRepublic to Silicon Valley and Ronald Reagan, the very best things this nation has brought the world in the past century have come from California.
Shall we talk about how stupid people are in Florida? Or how about we just drop it now?
This type of baloney is the logical result of so much of Christendon being infiltrated over several decades by liberal secular humanists, who have reduced (and I mean reduced) Christianity to nothing more than activisim for the entire range of left wing social causes. What Mahony is espousing has nothing whatever to do with Christ, or the Gospel. This guy should stick his nose out of politics and devote his time and efforts to preaching the message of Salvation through Jesus Christ - which is what he's supposed to be doing, if he even believes in it - instead of evangelizing for the left-wing political religion in which he has apparently placed his faith.
Mahoney has convinced himself that this is like WWII when everyone sat back and didn't object to shipping the Jews out of town .... when all we're asking is that they be sent HOME.
Someone should remind the good Rev how Jesus was born ... by his parents going to Bethlehem to partake in the census, following the law of the land at the time.
Typical Florida bigmouth professor
ROTFL!
Right.
"In 2004, California taxpayers received only 79 cents in federal expenditures for every dollar in federal taxes."
Translation: 21 cents of every federal tax dollar paid by Californians is given to other states.
Always expecting the rest of the country California to bail them out.
There. Fixed it ;-)
If it is peaceful and is ok, would it be proper and ok then to soundly protest his political views in the front of his church by concerned citizens. Civil disobedience is a cause for protest in any moral sense.
Sounds as though anyone passing through whose filthy lucre hits the collection plate is aces with Mamonney...
I think those foreign invaders hurt their cause rather than helped it. I used to be slightly sympathetic to them but not at all anymore. They are very arrogant. Just like Mahony.
Cardinals and bishops like Mahony are so thick they are in another world. Some of them (not all) have lost their moral compasses.
Why is it that anyone think it makes sense to send money to Washington and then expect to get it back?
......and what happened to "Separation of Church and State", Aiding and abetting felons, Inciting to riot et al? Where is the FBI or ICE?
Look, I love California. But I get mad at what a bad situation it has come to. I began teaching there in 1966 when it had the best schools in the country. Admit it. You have taken the best and ruined it. I watched the power crisis and it was shocking how disfunctional the political system was and is. If I can make a harsh comment that shocks you into fixing what is broken instead of deluding yourselves into thinking that you lead the planet, then I will.
You've either entirely missed the point of my post, or you're blatantly changing the subject. Given that you're a professor, I'm guessing the latter ;-)
Either way, I wish you a good evening.
OK so now it's making sense. You read the headlines and watched the news. Since you are so certain about something like the power crisis, how many hours in the 6 months of the power crisis was my home in suburban Sacramento dark?
What, exactly, do you think Mahoney is espousing?
LOL! BUMP!
Tonight Sensenbrenner was on with Lou Dobbs and the subject of Mahoney's attempt to encourage violation of the law by encouraging his faithful to aid illegal aliens. BUT - GET THIS! Lou pointed out that in 1986 the United States Catholic Conference urged all aliens NOT to enter the United States illegally! So, it appears Mahoney is not only pandering to potential supporters of his archdiocese -- but he's a hypocritical flip-flopper!
I admire your pluck sticking it out there.
And communists, and false-believing gnostics who are actively undermining it from within...
I too am a Catholic.
I have been very disturbed by the actions of the Cardinal Mahony and all of the other Bishops who have decided to follow him like lemings!
I don't know what to do or say to effect the actions of Cardinal Mahony or to show the fallacy of his actions. From the priest to the Cardinals, they don't care what the ordinary Catholics think.
Look at the pedophilia situation with priest and how long it was covered up by the BISHOPS who think that they are above God's law and MAN'S LAW!
My usual suggestions is to BOYCOTT the collection basket but I am only one person.
DO you have any suggestions on what might be done to drive home a message to these guys?
For sure, you have no idea how furious most people in the country are to see your demonstations. Ignore the feedback and be snotty. That is what we have come to expect from delusional, immoral and illegal Californians. You put your faces on celluloid and send the images round the world and then won't accept the consequences. You send batty, emotional women to the senate to represent you and expect to be taken seriously. It just doesn't work that way.
The earth groans under the burden of scum like Mahony. We know what country he works for and it's not the U.S.A., but the V.A.T.I.C.A.N., as witness his presence there during the illegal's arrogancy.
This is a excerpt for a web site sponsored by the ."
Diocese of Las Angeles:
The Church recognizes the right of sovereign nations to control their territories but rejects such control when it is exerted merely for the purpose of acquiring additional wealth. More powerful economic nations, which have the ability to protect and feed their residents, have a stronger obligation to accommodate migration flows. (Page 15, Paragraph 36)
Suggestions?
No, I live over seas. I will return this summer.
I know, and I beleive. I still believe in the Church.
Its just a few knuckleheads!
"Typical California boob"
Your generalizations are ridiculous and demeaning to all the great conservative FReepers from CA. and must I remind you the home of FR.
and besides , the typical California boob is filled with silicon!
That does it. I'm moving into Vatican City, so the Catholic Church can feed clothe and house me.
This is the best rebuttal that I have heard regarding this immigration issue!
We should all imigrate to Vatican City and set up tents and live there. I like it!
What are the immigration laws of Vatican City?
Oh bullcrappy. You make some immature, insulting and crass comment then backpedal all over the place "Oh, I LOVE California but YOU broke it now fix it!" Pulleze. From a state where the people can't pull a voting lever? My house in Ventura NEVER lost electricity. I don't READ the MSM garbage, we no LONGER have a Dim in the governors' office (no matter what your feeling about him, he's no democrat). The trend is AWAY from the liberals. We pay some of YOUR bills. So, my suggestion is to lay off the bashing people by territory. Especially anyone from Florida. It's stupid. Besides, you have no surf. So, I hope you like harsh comments right backatcha.
I don't know but I'll bet they don't like tents.
I did not know that Californians brook no criticism. I have found that they reject it in the most unsophisticated ways imaginable. I don't think these displays of pique have done anything at all for your image. They underline my first comment. No problem solving, just a whole lot of carrying on.
Really? how is it then that California manages to juggle almost 1/3 of the entire US economy?
"Always expecting the rest of the country to bail them out."
Just to get you up to speed, California is the largest 'donor' state in the US. We get back less than 60 cents on our tax dollars.
If you wish to unload on a liberal (or two) dump away, but try to stay within the bounds of reality, not emotion.
Cardinal Baloney needs all the money he can get to pay up for the antics of the pedophile priests he protected.
Gosh, I came late. How did this become a California-bashing thread when it was supposed to be a Cardinal Mahoney-bashing thread?!
:-)
LOL
What do you mean "you"? Where was the Federal government when the illegals were pouring accross California's borders? You lived here, what did you do? I bet as little as everyone else.
When a few Border Patrol agents made arrests last year, Bush sent out his representative to tell them to stop. When California passed an initiative to deny illegals benefits, the 9th circus court of appeals overturned it. What happened when it was appealed to a higher court? Where was our leadership? The country has turned a blind eye to our problems and pointed a finger. Now that the illegals are spreading out accross the nation, all of a sudden it is an issue. When we have asked for monetary help from the federal government, Californians have never recieved as much as was contributed.
Mahoney harbors pedophiles, where is the FBI? Mahoney harbors illegals, where is the federal government? The rotting begins from the top down. Mahoney has gotten away with murder for years and everyone has turned a blind eye. Our problems are the country's problems and it will get a lot worse before it gets better.
The rest of the country is as much to blame for the trashing of the Golden State as the residents.
I'll bring the cannon!
