Mail carrier's discovery leads to Lowell drug bust

LOWELL -- Santana Baez and Luis Carmona didn't want to keep any illegal drugs in their apartment in case it got raided, police said.

So they put their stash inside their mailbox at 11 Allen St., Unit 302, in the city's Belvidere neighborhood, apparently forgetting the postal carrier comes on Monday, said Police Sgt. James Trudel.

According to police, the carrier thought the boxes were outgoing mail but then found heroin in one and cocaine in the other.

There's a reason they call these people dopers.

Carmona, 34, who also uses the name Daniel Baez, was deported to his native Dominican Republic in 2000 after being arrested on drugs charges and re-entered the country illegally, Trudel said.

Close the d*** borders.

Peculiar. Why did the letter carrier look in the boxes? And if they're the sort of boxes checks are mailed in, what evidence do the police have they weren't slipped into the mailbox by someone else? I'm not saying the story isn't true, but if it is then it looks like a legally weak case.

Well, maybe there are fingerprints.

Carmona is expected to eventually face a federal charge for illegally entering the country.

Eventually, maybe, depending on the outcome of pending legislation coming from Washington, and if it's decided Carmona came here to do jobs Americans don't want to do. Maybe. Eventually.

Why did the letter carrier look in the boxes?

You can't make a drug war omelette without breaking constitutional eggs.

An apartment mail box is usually accessible only by the letter carrier and the apartment dwellers who use it.

All sorts of things end up in such boxes ~ snakes, bombs, dirt, garbage, and, sometimes, lo and behold, mail!

That's why carriers would look into the box ~ it's their job ~ and, given the design they can't help it.

It would be difficult for someone else to store their stash in your box, so next time, don't do that!
