'Brokeback' screening lands prison officer in hot water (Prison: Sex scenes made film inappropriate)

BOSTON, Massachusetts (Reuters) -- A Massachusetts correctional officer is being disciplined for showing the gay cowboy movie "Brokeback Mountain" to inmates at the state's largest prison because his boss determined that the film includes content inappropriate for a prison setting.

Massachusetts Department of Correction spokeswoman Diane Wiffin said Saturday that the action was not related to the critically acclaimed film's plot involving a gay love affair.

"It was not the subject matter. It was the graphic nature of sexually explicit scenes," Wiffin said.

She said the officer, whom she declined to identify, failed to follow prison guidelines that require staff who schedule films to review them in advance for excessive violence, nudity or sex, as well as scenes involving assaults on correctional staff.

The officer showed the film Thursday afternoon, two days after its American release on DVD, to inmates at a prison in Norfolk, Massachusetts, about 25 miles southwest of Boston.

Wiffin declined to discuss his punishment.

Based on Annie Proulx's short story, "Brokeback Mountain" is about two men who meet and fall in love while wrangling sheep in Wyoming in 1963. It won raves from critics and garnered three Oscars last month, including one for director Ang Lee.

As someone here who's actually seen the film, the reason it was inappropriate was the amount of FEMALE nudity in it...

That makes two people I know who've seen it.

The other one is a lesbian. Go figure...

You are SO bad. When's the film being released? I might just have to see the sequel.

I particularly like the "screenplay by Howard Stern" part.

Well, I'm not a lesbian, or gay, I saw this with my girlfriend when I was visiting her in NY. I've already decided what my sexual orientation is, and I wanted to evaluate the film for myself.

I predict that a lot more people are going to see the film in the DVD version, there were a lot of places that you couldn't find it, and there are probably a lot of people who wouldn't walk into a theater in their towns, but the anonymity of NetFlix will give them an opportunity to make up their own minds about it.

She said the scenery was stunning, and the ending was very sad. Over all she liked it. Only one other person in the theater (matinee showing).

What was your experience?

So the subject matter -- two guys alone for a long time with no women start having sex with each other after one rapes/violently seduces (?!) the other -- that's not at issue in a prison facility?

It was indeed stunning scenery, the oohs and ahhs in the theater were most evident when sweeping landscapes were shown. Of course, this was about half an hour out of NYC, and I would imagine that such sights were not too commonplace for most of the moviegoers in that location. I told my girlfriend that I could take her to places that looked like that out here in the Northwest, and indeed, on her visit here, we went to the Oregon Coast to see the incredible vistas.

Yes, the ending was very sad. I guess the "message" of the movie is that you should go out and do what you need to do to be happy, rather than pretend that something else will make you happy. I suppose that Hollywood glommed on to this film as a counter to the political support that anti-gay marriage initiatives have received in the states where they've been on the ballot.

As a live and let live person, I can see their point. The problem comes with deciding what crosses the line between asking to be left alone, and shoving things down someone else's throat. I know a lot of my fellow Freepers think this film crosses that line, but I didn't see it that way.

OK. So it’s like time to wake up and smell the java guys!

Just how many real life lesbians do you know who look like Jessica Alba or Halle Berry?

And no matter what they look like, if they are into each other, that probably means they are not into you no matter what you’d like to think!

Hell if I could find an attractive chick, gainfully employed, great between the sheets, handy around the house, would take out the trash and liked to shop; what would I possibly need from any of you guys?

And just why are guys all a twitter about two chicks getting it on but not two guys – “that’s just plain disgusting”.

I think you are being intellectually and morally dishonest – not that there’s anything wrong with that – just an observation.

And speaking as a chick – I don’t get any thrill from seeing two guys getting into to each other.

Are we really from Venus and you from Mars after all?

Me neither. Did anyone hold a gun to your head and make you see it? I think not!

I don't have any plans to see it, nor do I much care if anyone else sees it. Not any of my business, really.

Thanks for the review. From what my friend said it sounded like a chick flick, not my favorite genre.

List time. Just what incarcerated men need to see.

Why should prisoners see any movies at all, unless perhaps religious ones that will help them towards repentence?

All joking aside, I am also a “live and let live” sort of person, distancing my self somewhat from some, but not all Freepers. I subscribe to "To thine own self, be true". As long as that causes no harm to myself or others.

I haven’t seen the movie yet but haven’t counted out seeing it either. It sounds to me that it’s a technically and visually well-made film with a compelling story line despite the “squirm factor”.

One does not have to like or agree with the choices a character in a novel or movie makes for that story to be thought provoking or a well told story.

In the last year, I re-read Tolstoy’s classic, Anna Karenina. I did not find much sympathy for the title character; she was self indulgent, self-obsessed and somewhat delusional. But her character was the novel’s focal point and moved the story line and other characters forward and served as a contrast for a life well lived.

The character of Levin is really the novel’s moral voice, often overlooked, as Anna’s tragic fate is so much more compelling to most readers.

"(Prison: Sex scenes made film inappropriate)"

Not just for inmates but anyone other than homos. It should be rated F: scenes that depict fags having ..er sex? ..Perversion would be a better term.

I've known a few bisexual women who looked that good -- well almost, but this was without airbrushing.... Unfortunately, my wife wasn't interested, so it wasn't up close and personal....

And speaking as a chick – I don’t get any thrill from seeing two guys getting into to each other.

My wife does.... Mind you, she sometimes reverses the joke and claims she's really a gay man trapped in a woman's body.... When she gets on that riff, I make sure I sleep on my back! 8>)

Are Jessica and Halle straight? Does anyone care? It was joke, not a social experiment.

And no matter what they look like, if they are into each other, that probably means they are not into you no matter what you’d like to think!

What who would like to think? Grab a towell and wipe off the stereotyping attitude, will ya?

Hell if I could find an attractive chick, gainfully employed, great between the sheets, handy around the house, would take out the trash and liked to shop; what would I possibly need from any of you guys?

You're sharing too much. What in the world makes you think any of "us guys" wants to give you any in the 1st place?

And just why are guys all a twitter about two chicks getting it on but not two guys – “that’s just plain disgusting”.

It's just plain disgusting.

I think you are being intellectually and morally dishonest – not that there’s anything wrong with that – just an observation

I do believe you don't think there's anything wrong with being intellectually and morally dishonest.

Are we really from Venus and you from Mars after all

Have you took a count on that "we" part? I think you may be one your own here - not that there's anything wrong with that.
