2008 presidential hopeful John Kerry said Sunday that he opposes a U.S. strike against Iran's nuclear facilities that would involve nuclear bunker-busting bombs - and announced his support for Sen. Russ Feingold proposal to censure President Bush.
Asked about reports that U.S. contingency plans include using "tactical nuclear devices" in a possible Iran attack, Kerry told NBC's "Meet the Press":
"I think that is another example of the move from the hip, shoot for the hip, cowboy diplomacy of this administration . . . For us to think about exploding tactical nuclear weapons in some ways is the height of irresponsibility. It would be destructive to any non-proliferation efforts. And the military assessment is [that] it won't work; that even this bombing strategy itself would not work."
Kerry said that instead, the Bush administration should beef up diplomatic efforts and enlist the help of other nations to persuade Tehran to abandon it's nuclear weapons program.
Asked if his opposition to military strike meant he would accept Iran obtaining nuclear weapons, Kerry said: "No, I'm not accepting it. And I've said point blank that you leave that option on the table for the end. But I don't think using tactical nuclear weapons still makes sense."
Kerry was also asked if he would vote for Sen. Russ Feingold's proposal to censure President Bush for wiretapping U.S.-based terrorists who are in contact with al Qaida.
"Yes," the Massachusetts Democrat told "Meet the Press." "[Bush] violated the law, in my judgment . . . A censure for inappropriate behavior is appropriate."
Asked if Bush should be impeached - an option that Feingold says remains open - Kerry said: "I think this impeachment talk is a waste of time. I don't want to go down that road."

A censure for inappropriate behavior is appropriate. And also utterly ineffective. It probably should precede any other action. Only remaining option after diplomacy and censure fail would be internal regime change. But if that's in play the progress toward it is imperceptible and thus not nearly fast enough.

Talk about how low our media and the dems can go.
Hersch puts out a completely fabricated story about using bunker nukes and then the dems come out and say Bush shouldn't use nukes even though he is considering it. And people actually fall for this tripe.

Was watching the Masters. Did Russert remind JFK about his promise a year ago to sign an SF 180 and that he had reneged by signing one that didclosed only what he had already released? In other words did Russert make a real interview or was it more of the same?

We must wait until they are used against us first?
Well, then he could proclaim, "I was against it before I was for it".

Check it out, though. Kerry is against Bush's considering a nuke strike. But at a second round on the question, he says that it has to be considered as an option to the last minute.
He has not changed.

2008 presidential hopeful John Kerry said Sunday that he opposes a U.S. strike against Iran's nuclear facilities that would involve nuclear bunker-busting bombs Unless they were developed "off budget" and in secrecy, the U.S. does not have any "nuclear bunker-busting bombs".
The weapon was revisited in the post-Cold War during the 2001 U.S. invasion of Afghanistan, and again during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. During the campaign in Tora Bora in particular, the United States believed that "vast underground complexes," deeply buried, were protecting opposing forces. While a nuclear penetrator (the "Robust Nuclear Earth Penetrator", or "RNEP") was never built, the DOE was alotted budget to develop it, and tests were conducted by the Air Force Research Laboratory. Such complexes were not found. As well, it has been stated [2] that Iran may have such deeply buried bunkers to guard its nuclear program. The Bush administration removed its request for funding of the weapon in October 2005. Additionally, US Senator Pete Domenici announced funding for the nuclear bunker-buster has been dropped from the Department of Energy's fiscal 2006 budget at the department's request. While the project for the RNEP seems to be in fact cancelled, Jane's Information Group speculates work may continue under another name.

You know what's really scary about this?
I wonder how many democrats and radical leftists out there actually believe we should just let Iran have the bomb? Because of the fact that we have so many nukes and Israel and India have nukes as well, that naturally it's so unfair for us not to let Iran have any nukes. They'll argue that Bush's "regime" and of course that evil combination of Israel and India are so much more dangerous to world security that Ahmadinejad that if we have nukes we are obliged to let Iran have the nuke, and that America does not "get" to determine who has nukes and who does not.
And when Iran's nukes first hit Europe, (obviously they wouldn't care if Israel disappears forever in nuclear war), guess whose fault it suddenly is for not being stricter with Iran?
Oh, and thanks again Carter, for destroying the democratic party forever, and for making appeasement popular AGAIN.

For us to think about exploding tactical nuclear weapons in some ways is the height of irresponsibility. Why can't at least one person get on the media and declare that anyone that is not able to even think about using nukes is by definition unqualified to be President of the United States? Anyone.

If Kerry truly believes Bush broke the law, then he is obligated to call for his impeachment. To do anything else is irresponsible. As a Senator, to make an abrupt change of personal policy without previous scrutiny devoted to the change would be irresponsible also. I saw this bile producing segment on MTP this morning. What was funniest about his censure/impeachment comment was he told Russert the impeachment talk was just about politics, but censure actually meant something.
After watching him contort and change his position from every other sickening utterance he'd ever made on previous editions of MTP, I was suprisingly hungry and had a strange craving for waffles.
