The last time we used our moterhome was last august. The dashboard air conditioner is not powerful enough to cool the entire vehicle on the road so we have to run the generator so we can use the "house" unit. This also allows us to keep the fridge running while on the road. We tow a chevy tracker behind it, called a "toad" in motorhome jargon. We got 5mpg. If we wanted to sweat like pigs, it gets 8mpg without the generator. Fuel tanks hold 80 gallons.

Remember this.... our country is only a major terror strike away from chaos, and when that happens I am heading straight to the marina and sailing away. With the sails up I can get 10,000 miles per gallon.

That is a good idea, we think of our motorhome as a disaster bug-out vehicle. It is already stocked with everything, just grab the guns and go.

Oak Island, about 2 blocks from old Long Beach pier. I'm glad I bought my place 2yrs ago before prices took off. I'm happy about price appreciation but I know I couldn't afford it now and, like the boating issue, I worry about beach cottage ownership and vacation for the working fella and his family.

I hear ya. There are a lot of decent RV's for sale in my area. It's definitely a buyer's market. I feel sorry for one woman with a beautiful Winnebago Class A for sale. It's a 99, in like new shape. They used it in their work. Her husband died recently, so she's selling it. It's been sitting on the lot owned by her friends now for quite a while. Sad.

Thanks for the cheery advice.
I own a sailboat. Don't ask me why. Even a flyrod.

Quite right, quite right. Caviar prices are out of sight, this season's Coach collar for Major Bowser just isn't as nice as last season's, and flawless 5-carat diamonds are getting harder and harder to find.

No kidding. I only enjoy going out a couple of times per year. For a few grand, I can have my hands on a boat that's worth over 100 times that, and I don't have to deal with upkeep.

Then, when you want to actually go out on a boat ride, charter a boat and consider yourself lucky you don't actually own one of these moneypits.

Your on target there Sam.
We used to take out the CEO of a Boston investment group. He would come out with us alone, about 6 times a season. We asked him why he didn't bring others, since he was paying for a 6 person trip. He would say he didn't want anyone getting seasick and causing us to go in early.(We fished offshore in some pretty rough stuff a lot of times. He wanted to go on certain day and if it was rough so what. He could take it.

We asked him why he didn't just get his own boat, which he could easily afford and he said it wasn't worth is in the long run moneywise or aggravation wise. He fished all over the world and you can't bring your boat with you. So he was glad to charter. - tom

WE have 3 kayaks, and a duckboat with a long-tailed motor. We use the kayaks most of all.

$100 to $175 a foot for SLIP FEES!!!?!?? It would be cheaper to rent a penthouse in Central Park! That is utterly insane.

NC coast is seeing private boating access disappear as marinas sellout to developers who upscale the property with condos.

Same with the fishing piers They're being torn down in favor of condos.

My parents used to take us to Nags Head and Hatteras back in 50's when the ferries were converted landing craft and the highway was one lane of old runway mats with turnouts for passing. I knew that bridge was a bad idea. I just can't picture what it looks like now. Nor do I want to.

After dealing with pool ownership at my last house, I derived my Pool Postulate: It is not important to have a pool, it is important to have friends who have pools.

My Nautical Axiom merely replaces "pool" with "boat".

It's worse than that. Any Falmouth or Hyannis Mass. Freepers want to tell Iron Jack what you are paying down there for a slip in a decent marina? ($200/ft) - tom

That's not a nice 45 footer, except for drinking coffee on it while safely tied to a dock.

This is a nice 45 boat in that size range: http://www.stanleyboats.com/boats/44.html

(Both boats are too big for most uses, though.)

Sure am glad I have a sailboat. I might use 10 gallons at most for the whole year going out just about every weekend.

Shhhh. I'd be quiet about that. The government may feel you are not paying your "fair share" and develop a way to tax you on the wind you use :-)

Well I once had a 12 foot aluminum semi-V with a '57 Johnson 3HP twin. It held about a half gallon of premix. When I finally ran out of gas at the end of the day, I'd just throw it back in my pickup bed, take it home, hose it out and prop it up against the side of the house. Total cost for gas and mooring: about $2. Feeling sorry for yacht owners' angst: priceless.

The economy is good; but the high prices of marina fuel, marina slips, boat insurance, maintenance, is going to kill boating for a lot of working people starting this coming season.

The economy is good; but the government statistics are nothing short of complete bull crap...with the price of everything from a gallon of gas to a hamburger bun nearly triple what they were 5 years ago...meanwhile, the main stream media...as well as blog sites such as Free Republic...continue to ignore the obvious.

It is rumored at Free Republic that it is taboo and counter productive to even mention suspicions of government data, and that to do so undermines the Bush legacy...

More obvious statistics of climbing interest rates and commodity costs are expected...but at Free Republic...all is rosy as the next flush of government statistics is expected to reinforce preconceived notions...

There will be NO film at 11...and you should shut up and smile and send Bush and the GOP more money...

Meanwhile...it is estimated that another 1 million illegal 'immigrants' will flood across the border this year, eagerly awaiting the next amenesty bill backed by George and Jeb...
