Prime Minister Ariel Sharon will officially give up the premiership on Friday, 100 days after he suffered his incapacitating stroke on January 4.
The cabinet is scheduled to meet in a special session Tuesday and declare that, as of Friday, Sharon will be considered "permanently unable to exercise his duties."
Ehud Olmert, who has been serving since January 4 as acting prime minister, will be named interim prime minister. This designation - which does not entail any change in the authority Olmert has enjoyed since filling in for Sharon - will also take effect on Friday.
Olmert, who led Kadima to election victory on March 28, will carry the title "interim prime minister" until he is able to form a government and is sworn in as prime minister.
Olmert became acting prime minister under the terms of the Basic Law: The Government. According to the law, "should the prime minister be temporarily unable to discharge his duties, his place will be filled by the acting prime minister. After the passage of 100 days, upon which the prime minister does not resume his duties, the prime minister will be deemed permanently unable to exercise his office."
A sad end to a great man's political career. Ariel Sharon was a Zionist through and through. He fought for the creation of Israel, in each and every one of our wars, and politically earned the respect and admiration of a majority of Israelis even as he was villified here on Free Republic. His actions were always guided by what he believed would make Israel safe and secure. He is a hero in every sense of the word.
He is a hero in every sense of the word.
He was indeed that, until at the very end of his career, he was persuaded by Ehud Olmert (a liberal in disguise) to sell out his country by giving large chunks of it back to the terrorist Pali's, and now that fox in the chicken coop (Olmert) is running Israel. Israel made her bed, and now will have to lie in it. Israel has its own death wish.
Sorry, disengagement was Prime Minister Sharon's decision and it was the right one. Ehud Olmert is no liberal except to American Freepers who are truly ignorant of Israeli politics.
