OSU librarian slapped with “sexual harassment” charge over conservative books for freshmen

Ohio State University will press forward with frivolous investigation despite ADF letter

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Officials at the Ohio State University are investigating an OSU Mansfield librarian for “sexual harassment” after he recommended four conservative books for a freshman reading program. ADF has demanded that OSU cease its frivolous investigation, yet the university is pressing forward, claiming that it takes the charges “seriously.”

“Universities are one of the most hostile places for Christians and conservatives in America,” said ADF Senior Legal Counsel David French, who heads ADF’s Center for Academic Freedom. “It is shameful that OSU would investigate a Christian librarian for simply recommending books that are at odds with the prevailing politics of the university.”

Scott Savage, who serves as a reference librarian for the university, suggested four best-selling conservative books for freshman reading in his role as a member of OSU Mansfield’s First Year Reading Experience Committee. The four books he suggested were The Marketing of Evil by David Kupelian, The Professors by David Horowitz, Eurabia: The Euro-Arab Axis by Bat Ye’or, and It Takes a Family by Senator Rick Santorum. Savage made the recommendations after other committee members had suggested a series of books with a left-wing perspective, by authors such as Jimmy Carter and Maria Shriver.

Savage was put under “investigation” by OSU’s Office of Human Resources after three professors filed a complaint of discrimination and harassment against him, saying that the book suggestions made them feel “unsafe.” The complaint came after the OSU Mansfield faculty voted without dissent to file charges against Savage. The faculty later voted to allow the individual professors to file charges.

On March 28, ADF sent OSU officials a letter informing them of Savage’s constitutional rights. A copy of the letter can be read at www.telladf.org/UserDocs/OSUMansfieldletter.pdf.

The university so far has declined to stop the investigation, saying in its response that it takes “any allegation of sexual harassment seriously.”

“The OSU Mansfield faculty is attempting to label a librarian as a ‘sexual harasser’ because they disagree with his book suggestions,” said French. “It is astonishing that an entire faculty would vote to launch a sexual harassment investigation because a librarian offered book suggestions in a committee whose purpose was to solicit such suggestions.”

ADF is a legal alliance defending the right to hear and speak the Truth through strategy, training, funding, and litigation.

I agree. If the librarian needs help, he should contact Jim O'Brien's lawyer for pointers.

Tenure policies at universities protect these radicals and they must be c hanged!

That works better for me.

Because in the new, pagan, femilezi mantra, sexual harassment is whatever a WOMAN wants it to be. ANYTHING AT ALL!!

When I left Houston Texas, it was to the point where if a man disagreed with a woman (this regards legitimate business disagreements), the woman would accuse the man of raping her. (First hand experience with Memorial Health Care System).

It's in the attached documentation, if you click on the link. There's a 42-page pdf file with all of the related correspondence.

On the other end of the spectrum, Book Stop has a "employees choice" section of books, and one of the choices was "Michael Moore Is a Big, Fat, Stupid White Man." The employee's comment was "'nuff said."

That probably rates an "only in Texas," though.

For one thing, I, myself, am an openly conservative professor and I know of at least two others. We've never had a problem. I've spoken out negatively and publicly at "diversity workshops" and never had a problem. For another thing, our student population tends to be relatively conservative. Ann Coulter and others like her come here and get treated politely. If something like what appears to have happened at OSU happened here, I think there would be quite an outcry.

God help her, too. She will need Him. My son has been pretty conservative as a teenager, but now that he is in the closed society of OSU, he has begun to question most of what he grew up with. Right now, he thinks he is smarter than his parents. I have every confidence that he will grow out of that, hopefully sooner rather than later.

What a great idea! Although, they wouldn't need to be dropped off in downtown. High Street on campus would work just fine!

OSU went to hell the year they banned couches on porches. Sometimes you just have to let things burn.

Then HOW could a man even talk to a woman about ANYTHING, in such a case, without fear of a false rape charge??

I am sure the women in that area did not have many male friends, if that was the case!!

What we need to do, among other things, is:

(1)Make sure the Board of Trustees knows what the faculty is doing

(2) In the case of a state funded university, make sure the legislature knows the situation.

(3) Get the Republicans to demand defunding (state and federal) of universities who allow these Leftist creeps to turn the universities into Marxist indocrination centers.

The blend of Marxism and Nazism was perfected by one Herbert Marcuse. His influence among the leftist kooks is quite significant.

whenever I am confronted with leftist ideas, I usually smile because it makes me feel so doggone smart

Leftist ideas are definitely a threat for me. The problem is that I have to hold in this belly laugh (to be polite, you know) and doing so could cause bodily harm. :-)

Thank goodness for alternate media so that this story will be heard by folks. Colleges are definitely feeling the pressure of alumni and parents withholding donations.

The hypocritical nature of what these universities are doing apparently hasn't occurred to them

You really don't understand. They are engaged in a revolutionary struggle to create the New Man (or Womyn or Transexual or whatever) who will Inhabit The New Revolutionary One World Socialist Paradise. They are Uberhuman, above good and evil, and above hypocrisy.

:-)

I wish I could say this was unbelievable. OSU? I guess it's everywhere, now.

It's getting more and more difficult to find a decent college education.

This is outrageous considering how the American Library Association knowingly and intentionally pushes pornography on children in a manner to cause the widest dispersal to children. But let a librarian recommend conservative books and it creates an "unsafe" environment, for professors, no less! See our page and what we said about this here:
