As he steered his Straight Talk Express across the United States in recent weeks, Republican Sen. John McCain has tried to stay a-head of the immigration issue. But Friday the immigration issue delivered 36 or so heads to his Phoenix office heads of lettuce, that is.
McCain has been getting skewered in the media for comments earlier this month to a union group in Washington, D.C., that immigrants are taking jobs no one else wants, and offered them $50 an hour to pick lettuce in the Arizona sun for a summer, suggesting they couldn't do it.
The senator didn't stick around long enough to process any applications, despite several offers to take him up on his offer from the audience.
So Friday more than three dozen demonstrators showed up at his office, many carrying lettuce picker applications in one hand, and a head of lettuce in the other to show they could do the job.
McCain was not on hand to greet them, but somehow it's probably not the kind of green he was hoping to collect for his budding presidential bid.
A diamond in the trash? Nope
Searching for a way to advance their cause of the garbage fee, Councilwomen Nina Trasoff and Karin Uhlich set their sights on giving relief to snowbirds who pay the garbage fee when they're out of town because they don't want to turn off their water and kill their plants that are on a drip system.
Uhlich's "intelligent growth" subcommittee considered a $4 reduction for the snowbirds who are in dire financial straits, owning two houses and all.
The only problem was it left the rest of the ratepayers 30 percent of whom could qualify for financial assistance to pick up the tab for those two-house-owning snowbirds who are stretched so thin.
Not such a winning issue for the two populists who campaigned hard that the $14-a-month fee disproportionately hurt the poor. They quietly let the issue die.
Break-in won't end immigrant focus
It would be understandable if Republican gubernatorial candidate Mike Harris made getting tough on crime a part of his campaign, what with his Scottsdale campaign office getting broken into and all last week.
Harris pledged, in a press release, to work with police to track down the "ruthless criminals" and "bring them to justice."
He said it appeared nothing was taken during the break-in, but someone had turned on and accessed his computer.
But Harris said he won't be deterred by the burglary and "will continue to argue for a tougher approach on illegal immigration."
Small steps for Rio Nuevo
The city's Rio Nuevo bill which would inject an extra $1 billion into the city's Downtown that is stuck in the Senate made it past the Senate's Rules Committee this week.
Although bills that are constitutional usually sail through the committee, the city had a tough time getting it on the committee's agenda. But now it has passed.
Onto the Senate floor it goes.

Senator John McCain has finally revealed himself in his
contempt for his fellow Americans:
He is a Ted Kennedyeque Liberal CommunistCrat !
No way is he going to be our next president !
For 50 dollars an hour, working say: 8 hours a day, 5 days a week = 2000 dollars a week !
Hell, I would make a run for Arizona for wages like that !
Yep but his pal Swimmer would then hit you with you are self employed so your tax obligation is at that level and you must payer higher SS, your own medical, your own unemployement and make the appropriate party and union dues contribution so....... you are now working at oh let's just say........ $1.35 an hour for 8 hours work.
It has to be that way since if you work all year picking lettuce traveling around the country you'd be in the wealthy category making over $100,000 a year.
Too bad they can't send him used toilet paper.
Pickup driving gun rack rebel flag waving didn't work well either...............
Oh well he could have made a melon joke at a naacp meeting.....

out in front of his Phoenix office yesterday!
I hope to see Juan McCain out of office forever. Treachery cannot be allowed to succeed.
I hold my head every time that RINO speaks.
Over the commode.
And no taxes withheld, because you damn sure know the wetbacks aren't paying any.
Oh really - McPain? Then please EXPLAIN to me why I have American BORN young (and old) men stopping by my house on practically a daily basis seeking work when they see either my husband or I working on the house or out in the field??????????
Lettuce pray that this low-life, comtemptible, little man is wiped out early in the primary season.
I emailed McCains office Sandrat i'm still waiting for my application for a 50 dollar an hour job.
I doubt i get a reply though ...

This is a collection of news bites regarding Arizona politics; the first deals with a lettuce protest in front of John McCain's Phoenix offices.
hehehehehehe --- taking a bite out of the lettuce knut McPain? hehehehehehehe
That would be great!!! And then I hope the good folks of Arizona would wake up and retire him.........the man is as dangerous as Ted Kennedy and Joe Biden.
We're stuck with this ticking time bomb for another 4 years, my wonderful state reelected him in '04.
Our best bet right now is to try to marginalize him.
I hope people don't start throwing heads of lettuce at him during his speeches.

Call the evil little bastard on his bluff!!
<< I hope people don't start throwing heads of lettuce at him during his speeches. >>
#23 ping.
I hope they do!
$50 an hour would draw some welfare types and even the less successful drug dealers might jump at that pay considering the lessened risk of lead poisoning.
McCain isn't presidential timber;he isn't even a presidential twig.
McCain already has the baloney!
dirty and used I can only hope lol
I predict that McCain will have a very rough time in the primaries!
<< I think my truck will get me to Arizona. On $50 per hour even $3 gas would be affordable.I'll get a camper slide in and everything! >>
McCainiac's $15,000.00 a month will see some pretty darned smart Yuma lettuce pickers this season.
8 hours picking lettuce ought to be doable.
It would have to be a new wrapped brush. A used brush could lead to the sender being charged with bioterrorism.
<< 8 hours picking lettuce ought to be doable. >>
I'm with you - and have put in for twelve. Seven days a week for the season!
McCain's the one who couldn't do a day's work. The nasty little lifetime freeloading moron.
Who in the world would vote for him? If he won, I'd consider voting Democrat for the first time in my life. Unless it was Hillary.
In 1970 he was a War Hero. In 2006 he is a Traitor. I guess that's not surprising considering what a flip-flopping opportunist he is. I considered voting for him in the primary vs Bush, until he opened his mouth. So I had to hold my nose and vote for the shrub in the primary and the general election. God, you'd think one of the two parties would put up someone good.
Bush has betrayed us because of his Hispanic relatives. But the thing is, many Hispanics are with us on this issue. I shouldnt say "with us", they ARE us. I overheard two Latino girls (I will not say Latina because English doesnt have different genders for words) talking at work a while back. One said that this jerk was acting inappropriately so she got him deported! HAHAHA! the other girl didnt like that, but that points out that Hispanics are as monolithic as Whites are - that is, they are not.
Kudos to you. That's a GREAT photoshop job.
that is funny, but I dont like the whole idea of RINO. That implies that all of us agree on every single issue. If we did, we would not win too many elections.
We should embrace President Reagan's idea of a big tent, where the party does have a platform, but you are considered a genuine Republican if you generally agree with the majority of it.
I would work 12 hours a day in the sun for 3 months for 50 bucks an hour. 7 days a week if he wants.
That would be $54,600 (before taxes of course.) Where do I sign up?
What McCain meant to say was that he wouldn't pick lettuce for $50 an hour.
I thought the same thing as soon as I heard that figure. Figuring 8 hour days (400 bucks), 5 days a week(total of 2000 bucks!), for 13 weeks (quarter of a year). it's around $26K gross. That's a GREAT part-time job! Even after taxes, it's still a lot for 1/4 year's hard work., Multiply say, 18K times 4, it;s around 72,000. If you wanted to make that much money in a quarter somewhere else, it'd be a lot harder.
Senator McCain, I'll take that job.
What was put up in exactly as it appeared in the Arizona Red errrr..... Daily Star.
Had to thank you for the link to this hilarious site. I read about 65 pages of the comments to McPain.
Somewhere I also saw something about toilet brushes going to that city official in California where the Mayor said Americans won't clean a toilet. People really are coming up with great ideas. Check out other creative thinkers noted in my tag-line.
Get a tan, lose the panty-hose and heels, lose 30 pounds, and lose the stress of inner-office politics for $50/hr? Where do I sign up?

Call the evil little bastard on his bluff!!
On that thread you will find several phone numbers for Traitor McStain's offices at the top. Give them a call and ask for an application. Make his staff answer for his duplicity.
[...comments earlier this month to a union group in Washington, D.C., that immigrants are taking jobs no one else wants, and offered them $50 an hour to pick lettuce in the Arizona sun for a summer, suggesting they couldn't do it.]
Everyone needs to remember McCain was speaking to a "union group", and was probably right.
The UAW has destroyed GM and when you add in the benefits, they get close to $50/hr.
I have heard the KFYI tag team fawn over McCain. I stopped listening to them then. Liddy and somebody. I guess they went national or something.
McPane - he is transparent.
Uh, I baled hay for a 1/2 cent per bale. Does that count?
