First Knights Templar are discovered

April 10, 2006

LONDON: The first bodies of the Knights Templar, the mysterious religious order at the heart of The Da Vinci Code, have been found by archaeologists near the River Jordan in northern Israel.

British historian Tom Asbridge yesterday hailed the find as the first provable example of actual Knights Templar.

The remains were found beneath the ruined walls of Jacob's Ford, an overthrown

castle dating back to the Crusades, which had been lost for centuries.

They can be dated to the exact day -- August 29, 1179 -- that they were killed by Saladin, the feared Muslim leader who captured the fortress.

"Never before has it been possible to trace their remains to such an exact time in history,' Mr Asbridge said. "This discovery is the equivalent of the Holy Grail to archaeologists and historians. It is unparalleled."

"I lost my house, one night. Then I sobered up."

Was your wife worked up? Was she holding a frying pan?

Steven Howarth’s ‘The Knights Templar’ is pretty good as well.

One of the coolest places we have ever been was near the city of Puy in central France. It was the Chateau de Busseole and was reputed to have been a gathering place for the knights going to the crusades. It wasn’t very big and sat on top of one of those pointy hills. I could have moved right in but it was probably haunted.

Not to hijack this thread since you mentioned Scotland. I visited Urquhart Castle on Loch Ness once. It’s a preservation area. Nobody knows who built it. Was it built by one of the old Clans? That fiord has good fish in it and is a fine swimming hole. After hanging your clothes on the berry bushes and climb over some rocks. The air and water temp is the same there. I proved that Nessie isn’t interested in biting pee-pees off.

Why not? When you plan to go somewhere, at least study where you are when you get there. I was in a haunted place in Toledo, Spain and in Edinborough, Scotland. Spirits are there and have very limited influence on the physical plane. Just go in, check it out and leave. You just feel cold. And don't make the ghosts mad.

That must be the place about 3 miles down the road where they sell tourist stuff. They must have expanded. If somebody got smart, they would open a fish and chips restaurant there. And buy the trawler with the nets that runs around collecting fish. Loch Ness is a very huge and deep lake. Larger than Lake Mead in Nevada.

"This discovery is the equivalent of the Holy Grail to archaeologists and historians...."

Sour grapes from a bunch of old farts still bitter that Indiana Jones found the Grail before they could.

How does one misplace a castle for a few centuries? I guess they didn't have Amber Alerts back then.

Always put GPS chips in your castles; you never know where they may wander off to otherwise.

We were driving from Paris to the south of France and just happened to see something about this near by castle when we stopped for gas. That is the way we like to travel, just finding our own way and discovering things along the way. We finally found the castle and the caretaker spoke no English, he did give us a printed history of the place. It was built in the 11th century I think and furnished with antiques from the middle ages. Nothing was mentioned about being haunted I was just speculating.

We have stayed in hotels and asked for the haunted room several times, once we actually had a strange experience.

The guy who hands out the free commuter paper at my Metro stop tells me from time to time about the 33 1/3 degree Masons.

They are headquartered in Newer York City.

We have had historical fiction as a genre forever. ... Too many people no longer can tell the difference between "accurate history" and fiction...

You mean there is chance that this isn't a true story?

I'd be shattered!

Your preferred way to travel is by car there? I prefer First Class overnight sleeper trains through those little countries. Get a map and plan that. It's worth it. Britrail too. Do 1st Class on the Sealink ships. Those are very big ships that they call ferries in Holland.

Just kiss a nice Spanish woman on the Med before catching the train at Alicante. End up kissing another nice one in Dunvegan, Isle of Skye, Scotland. Have fun!

I had a co-worker who could only relate to foreign affairs by compare/contrast it to a Simpson’s episode. Drove me nuts!

We traveled by train in Europe once and we saw nothing! The train was either in a ditch , behind a wall or a hedge. Nope, rent a car, get a map and see the country, stay at small hotels in small towns and you meet people. Ask those people where to eat and what to see and you have an adventure not just a guide book experience.

ACHHHHH!!!

The Da Vinci Code is pure fiction.

The Knights Templar were real - Christians on the cutting edge of the Islamic menace.

Of course. I certainly didn't post anything to imply otherwise.

I suppose that depends on your viewpoint. ;O)

You are 1/4 right. What you have to do is first get a map of Europe. Then plan where you want to go. All those cities from south to north and back. This is done in advance, not off the cuff. It takes planning. As to how much time you wish to spend in each city or country. Then create a schedule. Then find the train schedule from point-to-point. And the ferry schedules too, depending upon which countries you want to travel between and from where. Then you can get on the net now and reserve hotels or bed-and breakfasts for your arrival times in all those places you choose.

You have limited time in each place like this, so you use it the best. And you have a chance to meet people that live away from big cities and see how they are doing. They will enjoy your interest to talk and meet.

I had the pleasure of seeing everything between Alicante, Spain and Dunvegan, Scotland and come back in a month. Just nice people. And we travelled through 9 countries. Fast. No aircraft. And not much rest.

And First Classe trains and ferries because we planned it months before doing it! Try it:)
