When I was doing research I found it interesting that the "Irish fairies" weren't cute & sweet (like our fairy tales)..

I recall my mom used to refer to a neighbor who "yelled like a banshee"! I assumed it was some wild animal, like a jackal?

Are you still going to DC now that the rally has been changed to Monday?

Walt Disney had a series of shows about Irish fairies on the old "Wonderful World of Disney" TV show.

It featured leprechauns and banshees. The banshee was a very bad omen.

I believe I am still going to D.C. next Monday. The situation has gotten very complicated. Instead of having the rally at 2 P.M. on Sunday, it is now at 10 A.M. on Monday, meaning I have to catch the Metro at 8 A.M. and fight the rush hour crowd. I also will have to leave on Sunday afternoon and rent a motel room. Instead of a 14 hour day trip I am looking at an over 24 hour endurance contest.

That really screwed everything up for me, big time.

Nine out of ten FReepers who were going won't be there. And only about 50 were going anyway.

Fairies stop developers' bulldozers in their tracks

VILLAGERS who protested that a new housing estate would “harm the fairies” living in their midst have forced a property company to scrap its building plans and start again.

Marcus Salter, head of Genesis Properties, estimates that the small colony of fairies believed to live beneath a rock in St Fillans, Perthshire, has cost him £15,000. His first notice of the residential sensibilities of the netherworld came as his diggers moved on to a site on the outskirts of the village, which crowns the easterly shore of Loch Earn.

He said: “A neighbour came over shouting, ‘Don’t move that rock. You’ll kill the fairies’.” The rock protruded from the centre of a gently shelving field, edged by the steep slopes of Dundurn mountain, where in the sixth century the Celtic missionary St Fillan set up camp and attempted to convert the Picts from the pagan darkness of superstition.

“Then we got a series of phone calls, saying we were disturbing the fairies. I thought they were joking. It didn’t go down very well,” Mr Salter said.

In fact, even as his firm attempted to work around the rock, they received complaints that the fairies would be “upset”. Mr Salter still believed he was dealing with a vocal minority, but the gears of Perthshire’s planning process were about to be clogged by something that looked suspiciously like fairy dust.

“I went to a meeting of the community council and the concerns cropped up there,” he said. The council was considering lodging a complaint with the planning authority, likely to be the kiss of death for a housing development in a national park. Jeannie Fox, council chairman, said: “I do believe in fairies but I can’t be sure that they live under that rock. I had been told that the rock had historic importance, that kings were crowned upon it.” Her main objection to moving the rock was based on the fact that it had stood on the hillside for so long: a sort of MacFeng Shui that many in the village subscribe to.

“There are a lot of superstitions going about up here and people do believe that things like standing stones and large rocks should never be moved,” she said.

Half a mile into Loch Earn is Neish Island. From there the Neish clan set forth to plunder the surrounding country, retreating each time to their island. Early in the 17th century, the MacNabs retaliated from the next valley, carrying a boat over the mountains, storming the island and slaughtering most of the Neishes.

This summer Betty Neish McInnes, the last of that line in St Fillans, went to her grave — but not before she had imparted the ancient Pict significance of the rock to many of her neighbours.

“A lot of people think the rock had some Pictish meaning,” Mrs Fox said. “It would be extremely unlucky to move it.”

Mr Salter did not just want to move the rock. He wanted to dig it up, cart it to the roadside and brand it with the name of his new neighbourhood.

The Planning Inspectorate has no specific guidelines on fairies but a spokesman said: “Planning guidance states that local customs and beliefs must be taken into account when a developer applies for planning permission.” Mr Salter said: “We had to redesign the entire thing from scratch.”

The new estate will now centre on a small park, in the middle of which stands a curious rock. Work begins next month, if the fairies allow.

Good morning to my Finest FRiends who have checked in thus far! I was up late.. my typical high pressure insomnia. I feel pretty good with high pressure systems headache relief - but have poor sleep. In the low pressure systems, I sleep well but feel .. yukky.

I grew up with fairy tales & fantasy. Read Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen; and stories about mythology. Never was into doll or playhouses too much but had an active dream life/imagination with the mysteries of I guess one would say "playful spirit world".

I recall having a small record player & I had 78 record sets of stories also. I would play those for hours when my mom wouldn't let me out for one reason or another. Being out doing ANYTHING was always my activity of choice.

This is just meant to be a nostalgia sort of thread, a warm fuzzy, if you will, walk down memory lane. It is not an academic treatise and isn't meant to be.

Tolkien, LOTR fame & CS Lewis, both authors I LOVE, were good friends as adult & were in groups that shared information on this, which was a big interest of theirs also.

You know, when I struggled with a title.. I got a bit irritated that a group of NON MAIN STREAM individuals makes one have to even consider an "alternate name"

Fairy Tales are Fairy Tales.. they were when my grandmother was a kid & will be with my Great,(6 times) grand child grows up.

So I knew I would take the obvious "hits".. and as this is a thread of fun & humor, we can all take it.

The same things with Rainbows & Rainbow colors in fashion. I love rainbow colored tie dye..And have a beautiful designer sport outfit with rainbows on it. Now if one wears one, one is looked on as "perhaps, one of those". When I sent a rainbow bridge to a friend recently who had lost her cat, she didn't open it & thought I was accusing her of that.

Does anyone else feel a little "robbed" along this way?

We aren't separated from the problems, as I can well attest... but we are NEVER separated from God's Love.

I found some antique prints of blossom fairies.. just darling..Some have big letter A,B,C and were probably used in ABC books. When tinypic is available I will download a few for fun..Wouldn't you know I would like blossom fairies!

If you have not seen the movie Fairy Tale: A Ture Story(1997), do see it. It is a sweet gentle movie that you can see with your grandkids & grandma & not have to worry about language, flesh, or violence.

Across the turbulent Atlantic, as the skies over England and much of Europe grew bright with the flames of the first World War, the people grabbed any means of comfort available so that they would survive the turmoil intact, even if their loved ones didn't. The Spiritualist movement fed the insatiable hunger of those who wanted to believe that there was a means of contacting deceased loved ones in a time of great political and social turmoil. It was in the midst of this unrest that cousins Elsie Wright, age sixteen, and Frances Griffiths, age ten, first picked up a Midg Quarter camera in 1917 and photographed what they insisted were fairies at the bottom of Cottingley glen, Yorkshire, England. Three years later, these photographs would be touted by none other than Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of the master detective Sherlock Holmes, as "an epoch-making event -- fairies photographed." Nearly seventy years would pass before that epoch-making event would be exposed as an childish hoax.

In the soon-to-be-released motion picture "Fairy Tale: A True Story," Elsie and Frances are portrayed as younger than they actually were at the time the photos were taken. It also portrays the fairies, which examination of the photographs proves they were not. Frances, who hailed from South Africa, has been sent to live with Elsie's family in Yorkshire, England in 1917 because her father was fighting as a volunteer soldier of the South African contingent. Frances' mother had also moved to England to live temporarily with her sister, which was not mentioned in the film. Elsie's mother, dressed in mourning clothes, refuses to cease mourning for her youngest son -- Elsie's younger brother -- who died from illness. It appears that this younger brother may have been created solely for the film. There is no mention of such a person, or his death, in any of the literature. Nonetheless, the sense of loss is present from the moment the film opens.

The cousins spend a great deal of time playing in the glen, and they take a series of photos which they claim to Elsie's parents depict fairies. Naturally, being children who are prone to engaging in pranks, the adults shrug off the claims, and stuff the plates (Negatives for a Midg camera are glass plates, not the flimsy film to which people today are accustomed.) and photos away where they are all but forgotten for the next three years.

.. Well, this is where my struggle was. The thread IS NOT about fairy tales it is about famous fairies.
