Councillors to hear proposal for nuclear plant in Derry 20/04/2006 - 11:19:56
Councillors in Derry are due to hear proposals today for the construction of a nuclear power plant in the city.
The plan is being put forward by businessman Robert Andrew, who says a 2,000-megawatt plant could generate the same amount of power as 300,000 wind farms.
Mr Andrew says the facility would meet all of the North's energy needs and would also create 500 stable jobs.
However, local Green Party spokesman Peter Doran is urging councillors to reject the idea, saying it flies in the face of public opinion.
Yesterday, a cross-border group of councillors challenged the British government to guarantee that no nuclear power plant would be built in the North and to look instead at renewable energy sources.

...who says a 2,000-megawatt plant could generate the same amount of power as 300,000 wind farms. And not to mention that a nuclear power plant is less than of an eyesore than hundreds of thousands of wind farms!!

Ireland - north and south - needs nuclear power.

I know someone in Portstewart with whom I speak regularly.
It should be interesting to get a local's viewpoint on this...

It's something that is being discussed here in the Republic as well, I can see huge objections to such a move, though.

Sadly, bigotry and ignorance have yet to be harnessed for sustainable power.
To: English Nationalist
It may not be bigotry as such - it's just there is a hysterical fear of nuclear power on this island among the political elite - see all the trouble there is with Sellafield.

If it were so, long ago Northern Ireland would have become a "powerhouse."

I can see huge objections to such a move, though. It all depends. Informed objections? or the usual moonbats?
Do they also object to irradiated food?

A new plant in Ireland, a new plant in North Carolina, a couple new plants elsewhere in the US and three hundred new plants in Asia. Somebody is gearing up for possible fossil fuel market changes, both increased cost and shortages, and it isn't Europe or America.

True, it's something I have long advocated in this country, I think the ball is finally rolling both sides of the border, though there will be huge objections to a nuclear plant - we have yet to even build an incinerator here!

Moonbats - most Irish people will give nuclear power a try.

...would also create 500 stable jobs. A 2000 MW plant in the US would be good for at least a thousand permanent jobs.

The funny thing is we do have natural gas off the coast of Mayo, but there are objectors to that, too.

Natural gas will continue to be abundant long after oil has passed its peak, which may not be too far off. Peak natural gas might be expected maybe a decade after peak oil, peak coal maybe fifty years after peak oil, and peak uranium maybe three hundred years after peak oil. Natural gas power plants would still be a valid engineering option for now.

Indeed, all they want is recycling.

Natural gas power plants would still be a valid engineering option for now. Belive it or not - we have power plants here that are peat-fired, there is one about 20 inland from where the proposed gas terminal is, there is word of converting the plant to a gas-fired station, makes more sense!

It's crazy, no matter how they try, they can't make recycling profitable.
In my area we have ridiculous situation where we switch between recycle bins and ordinary bins every two weeks, supposedly no extra charge - but I'm sure it's been subsidized by taxes!!

Peat is it? Poland has plenty of coal, but it is brown coal, one step above peat. That stuff gives off a lot of fumes and particulates. China has a lot of that soft coal, too, and we can see their smoke in Alaska. Everybody should go to natural gas now and gear up for nuclear if only so we don't get black lung all over the northern hemisphere.

Same here.
Blue boxes one week, and black boxes the next.
I don't play that game at all.

Blue boxes one week, and black boxes the next. WOW!! Even the same colours, I find it amazing the way enviromentalists act in unison, even down the colour of recycling bins! Kinda scary.... ;)

To be fair, peat doesn't give off a lot of smoke - it just that it's not efficient fuel for power plants.
Though, peat ('turf') is a great (and cheap) fuel for domestic uses!

You're lucky. Over here in delightful Surrey we have 2 seperate boxes that have to be put out each week in addition to the normal rubbish.
