WASHINGTON - In a rare occurrence, the CIA fired an officer who acknowledged giving classified information to a reporter, NBC News learned Friday.
The officer flunked a polygraph exam before being fired on Thursday and is now under investigation by the Justice Department, NBC has learned.
Intelligence sources tell NBC News the accused officer, Mary McCarthy, worked in the CIA's inspector general's office and had worked for the National Security Council under the Clinton and and George W. Bush administrations.
The leak pertained to stories on the CIA’s rumored secret prisons in Eastern Europe, sources told NBC. The information was allegedly provided to Dana Priest of the Washington Post, who wrote about CIA prisons in November and was awarded a Pulitzer Prize on Monday for her reporting.
Sources said the CIA believes McCarthy had more than a dozen unauthorized contacts with Priest. Information about subjects other than the prisons may have been leaked as well.
The sources spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the firing.

CBS and Bob Schieffer should be ashamed of themselves, but they gave up shame a long time ago. This woman is a Democratic politico who was feeding information to reporters to damage the Administration. She signed confidentiality agreements when she joined the CIA, and she violated them for political reasons. She signed similar agreements when she worked for the National Security Council. She has broken them and violated the law.

I think McCarthy's inducement was the damage to the Bush Administration, and increasing the political fortunes of the Democrats. Who knows, she might have gotten a big appointment in Hillary's administration.
I see the outting and firing of Mary McCarthy has not had the desired deterrent effect.

I believe the original Mary McCarthy maintained her virginal purity to the end so she had no daughters.
I guarantee that Mary McCarthy is a RAT. A lot of people wrongly assume that CIA and FBI personnel are conservatives. That all changed in the 90s under the Clintons when a lot of leftwing RATs got to work for those organizations. I also recall some woman in the CIA who was passing information along to Castro.
