The old song lyrics “I need a place to hide away” traditionally have applied to the bathroom in conventional culture.
It was the one comfort zone in which to be alone.
Don’t count on it.
The New York Times says attitudes about privacy are changing, and cutting-edge bathrooms have translucent glass or acrylic walls that make the interior visible from other rooms.
Joel Sanders, an architect and professor of architecture at Yale, has designed several see-through bathrooms. The shame about the body is not a factor for many clients, he told the Times. Ideas about privacy are more relaxed.
Some homeowners want no walls. One family put portholes in the door. Another used a blue glass through which only shadowy figures are visible.
The arrangement can be a problem for guests. The answer is two bathrooms or short visits.
In there my sphincter would never relax.

"Honey...can I get something from the cabinet in there?"

...and yes...we have more than one bathroom. The fun never stops.
I don't care for these new bathroom ideas. Some have no doors.
Somehow this has been always "cuting edge" but never catches on.
Too bad some artsy fartsy types can't be forced to live in NORMAL environments in order to see what real people like, want, and are willing to pay for.
Seems only some kind of freakshow would want this manure.
And yet they don't want the FBI seeing what they check out of the library...
This has been the trend for master bedrooms for a long time. I truly don't think guest bathrooms have no doors or are see through...that's just ridiculous. When we designed our master bedroom suite the bathroom was an extension of it, so why have doors? Besides, I love looking at my husband! :)

You really like looking at your husband taking a dump? I don't think anybody, man or child, is gorgeous enough that I'd actually love watching or hearing them defecate. And I don't want anybody to watch me moving my bowels or performing certain female functions in the bathroom. Yuck.

I have a fairly standard reply when I read things like this. It's two words:
F*cking. Freaks.
I remember a few years ago there were some "trendy" restaurants that had see through bathroom walls and doors.

What part of the country do you live where there is an open TOILET to the Master Bedroom??? YIKES.
I've seen this in hotels. Not clear but the use of glass block or various translucent materials for the bathrooms in guest suits. It's a bit distressing at first but I'm not fond of those places which use only clear glass and walls of mirror in the bathrooms either. There's nothing like catching a glimpse of yourself in the mirror and thinking someone's in the bathroom with you!
New York Times interviewing an architect at Yale about bathroom design? That's a recipe for a freakshow if I ever saw one.
I've toured several model homes in Southern CA where there are no doors between the Master bedroom and the Master bath suite, just an archway.
There are some bodily functions that should not be viewed by anyone else.

LOL!! I agree. I wish I had one more bathroom with no windows and another door that locks. One should say "women only". LOL!
