Interesting post. One question I have is what difference such a resolution would have in the real world. Does this association, as an association, have a working relationship with the Boy Scouts or is it a working relationship in regard to collections and use of the libraries?
To me that makes a difference because it seems a lot of these librarians are not dealing with private property, rather managing the collections paid for and maintained at public expense. If so, they have no right to determine which parts of the public has unfettered versus fettered use. If a private library collection wishes to control access to that collection, so be it. But if these poseurs are playing with public assets, they should shut up and concentrate on finding ways to make libraries relevant again beyond pedophile trolling areas and babysitting services.

I will open a bottle of the finest Scotch the day we see another Joe McCarthy and HUAC going after these communist front groups.

The Scotch will be well-aged by then.

Libraries have become de facto homeless shelters and places for sexual perverts to spend the day surfing porn sites on the web browsers. Not exactly the kind of place you want your children to visit. They may well learn things you didn't intend...and not from the materials on the bookshelves.

A renewed effort by several members of the American Library Association's governing council would sever all ties with the Boy Scouts of America until the youth organization stops "discriminating" against avowed atheists and homosexuals.
Call it what it is - A delusional effort premised upon the delusion of the left...

Books are dead...
Won't be long.
I understand the difference between a librarian and a repository of knowlege....unfortunately, they will be
museums or repositories for source materials. The heyday of the library is past and the need for such places will dwindle, rather quickly, I think.

He was referring to a 1999 ALA resolution, which read: "That the American Library Association urges the Boy Scouts of America to reconsider their policy of discrimination in the areas of sexual orientation and religious belief and demonstrate a commitment to human rights, inclusiveness, and mutual respect."
IF only the ROMAN CATHOLIC church had discriminated/or BELIEVED the scriptures many children WOULD have been spared.

Me too.
Though I get a lot of info from the net, there is nothing like a good read...portable, no energy source required to make it "run" except your own eyes and mind.
It just seems like too many younger people just don't read to be reading, especially books....its almost an alien concept. Maybe I am wrong in that.

All,
I have commented on this article here:
ALA's Double Standard on Censorship and here:
Good Librarians
Here is what I said at the former, and tell me what do you think:
Another Interesting Aside: The ALA Censors Out The Boy Scouts!
A renewed effort by several members of the American Library Association's governing council would
sever all ties with the Boy Scouts of America until the youth organization stops "discriminating" against avowed atheists and homosexuals. .... The renewed effort is led by Mark Rosenzweig, formerly an official archivist with the U.S. Communist Party and a chief defender of Fidel Castro in the
ALA controversy over the communist regime's repression of the independent library movement in Cuba, reported by WorldNetDaily.
"It is scary that an organization which purports to believe in free speech and intellectual freedom would take this kind of action," said BSA spokesman Bob Bork. "It is a Soviet-style effort to make us a non-person." ....
The BSA's Bork responded:
"How could they show such utter disregard to the First Amendment rights of any organization? We have the same rights of freedom of association as the ALA and it is disgusting to think they would disrespect those rights."
"This resolution plays into the hands of critics who take ALA to task for being too liberal," [an ALA council member and city librarian for Bridgeport, Ct., Michael] Golrick warned.
"If anything, this will turn off many librarians who might otherwise join the organization since it positions ALA in such a left-wing position."
The above are direct quotes from the following recommended reading:
Librarians to Sever Ties with Scouts? Effort Underway Cites Discrimination Against Atheists, 'Gays', by Walter Skold, 22 Apr 2006.
Notice there are no issues of libraries or librarianship here. This is clearly outside the ALA's activities for which it receives taxpayer and corporate support. Might it be time to withdraw such support? Is this not further evidence of the ALA double standard?
To: Man50D
Having worked in both a public and university library, and being the proud parent of 2 Eagle scouts, I find this development particularly disgusting!
