NAACP: Rights violated at park

Cessation of meal services, propane delivery spurs charges:

The NAACP collected affidavits Friday from residents at the FEMA Renaisssance Village in Baker that contain complaints alleging lack of services, harassment and intimidation.

Kwame Asanté, director of the Louisiana chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said NAACP representatives have been going to the village council meetings.

“There are a lot of people who feel that their rights have been violated,” Asanté said Friday afternoon.

About 1,650 hurricane evacuees have been living at the 572-unit trailer park on Groom Road since it opened in October. Most residents signed an agreement that would allow them to live in the park for 18 months.

Initially, FEMA provided three meals daily in a communal kitchen and paid for the propane that is necessary to run the trailers. The trailers have electric lights but propane is used for bathing, cooking, refrigeration and heat. FEMA stopped providing propane in February and ended the meal service two weeks ago.

Transportation is an issue for many residents, especially older ones, who don’t have vehicles.

“Many of these people lived in communities (before Katrina) where they didn’t need a vehicle. We’d just like to see the government change the way we address these situations,” Asanté said.

According to a news release from the NAACP, James Ross, president of the village council, said the residents’ complaints center on the promise from FEMA that they would receive 18 months of assistance with meals and propane.

Ross and other residents also have complained that FEMA representatives have been asking residents for proof that they are looking for employment and seeking other places to live.

“This is leading them to believe that they are going to be asked to leave,” Asanté said.

Asanté said the NAACP collected the affidavits of complaints from about 50 residents, and they plan to submit them to FEMA representatives.

“Also, we’re keeping copies so that we can collect data to track the kinds of complaints for possible legal action down the road,” he said.

I'm out of Mustard!
My rights have been violated!
My cats litter box is full!
My rights have been violated!
Somebody didn't flush my toilet!
My rights have been violated!
Geesh.
In reality, I guess, this has been rather instructive.

That's right, get something for free and complain about it. Maybe the NAALCP can help out by providing vehicles, etc.

How many months have we been paying for these freeloaders...errr victims?

What a load of garbage.

Are these the people they're asking before they decide Americans won't work those jobs the illegals work?

What are they doing to help? How many people have they fed? How many have they chauffeured? How many have been offered jobs?

The DEMAND for vehicles to be provided by FEMA will follow very soon.

I think we ought to just consider FEMA bankrupt and shut it down. No more federal assistances. States must have hurricane preparedness in their budget and take care of themselves.

As long as the Democrats suck up to these bloodsuckers of taxpayer money the Dems will be the minority party.

So, just think of that as you go about your weekend, and smile.

Louisiana is lost, NOLA is lost, the NAACP is lost, thanks to the the Democrat Party and the Racist CBC and NAACP. Let's get Cynthia McKinney and John Conyers to come down and manage this activity. FEMA can turn the authority over to them!!!! Black folk in this country better wise up and get rid of these deadbeats. The good news is, an amazing number of Black businesses have been started over the past few years. This is a great sign of assimilation into the general economy. Coupled with increased Black ownership in housing, a good number of Blacks are getting the real skinny that the Democrat Party and their own leaders have been their worst enemies.

Guess that old bit about beggars and choosers no longer applies. Yes, I know these particular beggars do not consider themselves as such, but of course they are.

'Take care of themselves'? Surely you jest.

I don't think that is even an option for them. In fact, I'm guessing the NAACP will have something to say about THAT.

Maybe Jesse Jackson could give them all scholarships? Or failing that, cars? Buses? jobs - no wait, they don't want to work, do they?

It sure looks to me as tho there is a lot of work still remaining to put the entire gulf coast back together. Are there no able bodies people living in that trailer park?

“This is leading them to believe that they are going to be asked to leave"

What part of "temporary" does this person not understand? They're going to just sit there and do nothing, in order to "get" a full 18 months of disaster aid in the form of housing, food and fuel, and then what? Is the concept of planning and preparation utterly alien?

I was down in Baker for 3 weeks last September. Bethany Church in Baker took in over 500 refugees and by November had them all gone. My parents' church in Zachary took in over 100 and through gentle encouragement they helped every one move out of the church sanctuary into places of their own. They were given help and support to find jobs and apartments in Baton Rouge or move in with family members. One of the most moving events that you will never hear about on TV that I personally witnessed was seeing some of the young boys that had that arrogant, thug, pants-so-low-you-can-see-underwear look, come into the church on Sunday. We may never know what good will come of this. Of course, every liberal group from the ACLU on down threw the biggest fit and no church that I was aware of received a penny of government money to help pay for their charity work. It also helps that these people were sleeping on cots in a church auditorium instead of living in their own furnished trailer.

I remember some years ago I saw an article about the problem of trash/garbage in the Cabrini - Green(sp) projects in Chicago because no-one would take out their trash/garbage from their apartment. The solution: pay them to take out their own garbage.

The good folks among the displaced have been trying to get their lives back together; the rest have been sitting back waiting for the government to do something for them.

Those who have been actively trying should get first preference in any aid program; the others (able but unwilling) need "tough love" in the form of required work for benefits.

Teach a liberal to fish, and he'll demand free chow for a year.

Trust me, with the help of the NAALCP and others, they're already planning which entitlement program they'll be moving onto once they've exhausted the "rights" they they're receiving now.

If these folks had the habit of planning and preparing, they wouldn't be squatting in these trailers in the first place. The passivity and fatalism of the underclass is literally an alien kind of mentality to most of us who are at least reasonably functional. What we saw on TV during Katrina was a glimpse of a different world, and these are the denizens of that world.

A little refinement is needed here.....

Give a liberal a fish and you'll feed him for a day hear them complain it contains mercury and other toxins.

Teach a liberal to fish, and he'll demand free chow for a year rail against eco-destruction, species endangerment, and the rape of Mother Earth's resources.

That seems more likely. Posting HTML

They need to demonstrate like the illegals for their rights.
Gosh haven't they learned anything from the other freeloaders who consider America their pinata and their cash cow?

Oh yes and lets not forget the illegals lovely little anchors who are weighing down all Americans.

My husband talked to a friend in South Louisiana yesterday. The guy is trying to find someone to pick his strawberry crop, paying $8.75/hour plus providing a place to live and 2 meals a day. Printed up flyers and distributed them. No takers.

I work for the military defending EEO cases. I see "The passivity and fatalism" in another form. Even among middle class working people, particularly Blacks there is a strong element of "the government owes me." They blame the government or discrimination or everyone but there own action or omissions. What I see is that the people filing complaints could go to school and get more education, learn how to prepare a better resume (for that matter learn how to write better), rather than complain to EEO about discrimination.

This association of Colored People would do better to teach their customers how to be self-sufficient than to help them whine because they have not been given everything they want.

I still remember pictures of some of these people sitting on their butts as water rises to their nostrils waiting for gub-mient to tell them to stand up and walk away from the water.
