That's a shame about all the welfare programs like that for adults. Really shameful.

But the kids should not have to suffer for it. In my kids' middle class school, it is a stigma to be on the free lunch program. So what the school did was have a give away table. Anything any kid didn't want was put on that table instead of being thrown away. And all kids were encouraged to take what they wanted. I was embarrassed when my son told me he regularly ate stuff from that table, but as I look back, maybe that was what was expected.

I think it's true, kids learn to go on welfare from their parents. Maybe it's time we started thinking of ways to stop that vicious circle. Like that 'give away' table in the cafeteria where anyone could find extra stuff they like.

Well, I'm thinking of going homeless. I've never had a massage in my life. No free stuff either. I've had to work for everything.

Yeah, but I'll bet you would be too proud and ashamed to do that.

What makes some people take welfare and others don't?

I've always had to work for everything myself and would not accept handouts either. But what makes us different?

Sometimes the "difference" may be not having a major health problem or your children not being ill or not having a crippling accident - it may be a "There, but for God, go I" - It may be a "thank your lucky stars thing.

It may be that people should be careful about judging because, often, they may find themselves in a like situation so that they can then understand - it happens.

Of, course, I've been there, too. Both my husband were both laid off at the same time and we had a baby on the way. Not a fun time. Most of us have been through hardships like that, but we get back on our feet and move on.

What we are talking about is the career welfare people with the attitude, why work, the government will provide for us. They feel entitled to a welfare check. And then they use it to buy a welfare cadillac.

What makes those people on a career welfare path different than those of us who get up after a catastrophy. We all need help at some point in our life, but we all don't need help ALL the time. It's the entitlements that need to go and bureacracy is part of it. Bureaucracy makes it too easy. If we didn't have those welfare programs, who would employ those state workers and bureaucrats? It's a perpetuating problem.

You are right. There are some cases where people do need disability assistance and the government helping out is a good thing. Unfortunately, the bureaucracy allows too much fraud to happen. Too bad there wasn't a better system for people who truly need it.
