Secrets of the CIA

A former colleague says the fired Mary McCarthy ‘categorically denies’ being the source of the leak on agency renditions.

WEB EXCLUSIVE By Mark Hosenball and Michael Isikoff

Updated: 7:07 p.m. ET April 24, 2006

April 24, 2006 - A former CIA officer who was sacked last week after allegedly confessing to leaking secrets has denied she was the source of a controversial Washington Post story about alleged CIA secret detention operations in Eastern Europe, a friend of the operative told NEWSWEEK.

The fired official, Mary O. McCarthy, “categorically denies being the source of the leak,” one of McCarthy’s friends and former colleagues, Rand Beers, said Monday after speaking to McCarthy. Beers said he could not elaborate on this denial and McCarthy herself did not respond to a request for comment left by NEWSWEEK on her home answering machine. A national security advisor to Democratic Party candidate John Kerry during the 2004 presidential campaign, Beers worked as the head of intelligence programs on President Bill Clinton’s National Security Council staff and later served as a top deputy on counter-terrorism for President Bush in 2002 and 2003. McCarthy, a career CIA analyst, initially worked as a deputy to Beers on the NSC and later took over Beer’s role as the Clinton NSC’s top intelligence expert.

Every story of McCarthy seems to describe her using the words "who was nearing retirement." - as if we should have sympathy for a traitor who close to getting a pension.

I don't think she'll have to worry about money. I'm sure Soros will pick up her bills, set her up for a few lucrative speaking engagements and a juicy book deal.

She must be really stupid. If she confessed, there's a recording or a document that could be trotted out to prove it.

This sounds like public posturing from a person who is trying to protect her pension in the secure knowledge that she will never be prosecuted.

Yep and if captured, you would be expected to resist torture before giving it up!

As a Vet, with a security clearance, this whole deal stinks. I would be swinging from the yard arm if I were her. But, I ain't one of them, go figure?

As a vet, I only had a "Secret" clearance and signed a form on outprocesing that I could be prosecuted for ever releasing anything that was classified "secret", let alone TOP SECRET CIA stuff... this makes me sick.

They assume that the President of the United States and an empoloyee of an agency have equivalent authorities. He is not merely her theretical superior but the Chief Executive of the United States who authority rests on the Constitution. Her only authority is what is contained in her job description. Her duty is to abide by its terms and, of course, she has the duty of defending the Constitution. She has been unfaithful to both.

Oh Yeah, I believe her. I fail lie detector tests all the time. lolol

Not only did McCarthy fail the test, she admitted to perpetrating the crime according to the report(s).

Civil servants don't get fired for nothing. It's almost impossible. If there were any doubt, the CIA would have just let her retire quietly or take a job of less importance.

And although the MSM deserves eternal criticism, at least this story led with McCarthy's Kerry/Clinton connections. Thanks for not hiding the truth for once.

Absolutely. She's either guilty of the prison story leaks, or something else just as bad. But given her connections to Joe Wilson and his to Dana Priest's husband, it does not take a great leap of faith to believe she was in fact the leaker.

Denying something means you are pleading innocent.

Categorically denying something means your overpaid defense team is looking to cut some kind of deal.

She was not escorted out of the CIA buiilding, the source said.

A serving CIA official said that the day that McCarthy was escorted out of the CIA’s Langley, Va., headquarters, some former colleagues of McCarthy defended her, even while acknowledging they were not familiar with the details of the case.

I guess with all the unidentified sources it doesn't matter what story you spin.

Maybe Mary and Cindy Sheehan can camp out together. Oh wait, can't happen, Mary was about to spend the rest of her life "saving the children". (And I'm gonna be an astronaut.)
