Kelsey Grammer to Run for Office?

LAST UPDATE: 4/25/2006 12:45:06 PM

Actor Kelsey Grammer has decided to follow in the footsteps of Arnold Schwarzenegger and run for public office.

The star and long-term Republican insists his willingness to discuss his troubled past - which includes alcohol and cocaine addictions - will disarm his opponents.

He says, "It's a notion I have about the future - to run for office, to do the world some good.

"Well the idea that we can do the world some good is a little nuts, the world tends to take care of itself.

"My frankness and openness about my past could probably benefit me though."

I have sat in a room with this man - he is smart - funny - articulate - and very very soft spoken.

He has a future - if we give him a change to speak his own mind.

Unless I'm mistaken, something about his "family values" left a lot to be desired, too.

What an awful way to phrase that. We have no evidence that the man is going to sell uss down the road on every issue we care about.

He's really turned that all around since he's stopped drinking. I've read it was a Catholic priest who helped Grammer give up the booze and settle down. I think he's genuinely reformed his life.

Stripper and Boxer should never be used in the same sentence.

He'll probably be ripped apart by the ivory tower snipers for being a "RINO" before he gets a chance to open his mouth.

My John McCain (up close and personal) story, from the 2000 South Carolina Primary.

Greenville SC - the 2000 Presidential primary - John McCain had just beaten ‘W’ in the NH primary and the “Straight Talk Express” rolled into South Carolina.

I was a McCain supporter - positive that he was the real deal.

I drove to a McCain speech and public appearance. It was a day I will never forget as long as I live.

That day I witnessed John McCain behave unlike any appearance I had ever seen on TV - the man was unhinged.

After a 15 minute canned speech - he decided to address his competition in the primary - George W. Bush. He did so by beginning with, “I am Luke Skywalker, and my opponents are members of the Empire. Together we will form the rebellion and defeat Darth Vadar”. He yelled this - first pumping - his voice full of anger - his face - beet red - and his eyes - well - they were scary.

The crowd instantly went from supportive - to bewildered.

He obviously didn’t pick up on the mood change - because he went on for another 5 minutes - ranting and raving about how everyone was lying about his record - his views - and he, “wasn’t going to take it any more” (remember the movie Network).

It was surreal.

When he finished - and with the prodding of an aid - he left the stage, while we in the crowd just stood there - stunned - and honestly - completely confused.

I asked a woman next to me: “what the hell just happened?” She answered: “that man is freaking nuts!”

I came home - walked in the house - sat on the couch and just looked at the wall. I suddenly realized - the man pushed on television - was not the man at all.

I have told this story many times - to many people - and I have heard the same story told back to me by others who have seen similar John McCain episodes.

I am not given to criticize anyone lightly ladies and gentlemen.

I am sure John McCain is a good man - but listen to me - and please believe me.

JOHN MCCAIN is NOT FIT TO LEAD THIS NATION.

John McCain is unstable. John McCain is freaking nuts!

Wow, McCain's a Republican Howard Dean. I've figured he's not quite right in the head for some time. He seems like the glue holding him together is very thin. Thanks for your story. Although, what would you do if, GOD forbid, it comes down to McCain vs. Hillary in 08? Sitting out an election is not an option for me.

Grammer has been married three times. His first marriage to dance instructor Doreen Alderman spanned eight years, from 1982 to 1990, and produced one child, a daughter named Spencer. His second marriage, to stripper Leigh-Anne Csuhany, lasted one year (1992–1993). Grammer claims she was abusive and that, after talk of divorce, she attempted suicide by overdosing on Tylenol and wine, which resulted in the miscarriage of their child. Since August of 1997, Grammer has been married to Camille Donatacci, a former nude model. They have a son and a daughter together via a surrogate mother. Grammer has one additional daughter, Greer, born in 1992, with hair and makeup stylist Barrie Buckner.

Born in St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands, Grammer moved to New Jersey with his mother after his parents' divorce. In 1968, when Kelsey was 13, his father, whom he had only met twice, was murdered on the front lawn of his home in the Virgin Islands; in 1975, his sister was raped and murdered after leaving a Red Lobster restaurant in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Kelsey, who was 20 at the time and enrolled in the Juilliard acting program, stopped attending classes and was expelled. In 1980, his twin half-brothers were killed in a shark attack while SCUBA diving.

In 1998, Grammer filed a lawsuit against Internet Entertainment Group, which Grammer claimed had stolen from his home a videotape of him having sex with a woman. IEG countersued Grammer, denying they were in possession of such a tape, and Grammer's suit was eventually dropped.

Grammer began drinking at age 9 and became a frequent abuser of alcohol. In 1988 he was sentenced to 30 days in jail for drunk driving and cocaine possession. He was again arrested for cocaine possession in August 1990 and sentenced to three years' probation, fined $500 and given 300 hours' community service. In January 1991 he was given an additional two years' probation for violating his original probation through additional cocaine use. In September 1996 he flipped his car while under the influence of drugs or alcohol and subsequently checked in to the Betty Ford Clinic for 30 days.

In the mid-'90s Grammer was accused of statutory rape by the parents of his child’s 15-year-old babysitter, but a New Jersey grand jury declined to indict due to lack of physical evidence.

In 2005, Grammer fell off a stage while presenting a speech at Disneyland.

After publishing his autobiography, "So Far..." in 1995, he was sued by a former girlfriend for defamation of character and invasion of privacy.

Grammer says he constantly has supernatural experiences.

I hope he does. He has truly changed his life after the booze and the drugs. He would be a valuable assest to the Republican party, not something that you see a lot of coming out of California.

Kelsey is smart, articulate, and his soft spoken nature is the antithesis of the democrats who prefer screeching like scorched cats.

I had my own drug and alcohol problems and my demons almost killed me but I believe my battles made me stronger. These days I wouldn't get along with the person I was fifteen years ago. I am a radically different person now.

I don't know where Mr. Grammer stands on any issues, so I'll reserve judgment on him until that time.

Nor will I hold being an actor against him either. I recall President Reagan was one too.

His assessment was exactly the same as yours. The television McCain bears absolutely no resemblance to the man in real life—He is completely and utterly unstable/unhinged/nuts.

Thank goodness you got out of that lifestyle and you are correct it must have made you stronger

"I don't know where Mr. Grammer stands on any issues, so I'll reserve judgment on him until that time."

Same here though given CA liberal leanings i am guessing he is probably slightly to the right of Arnold

"Nor will I hold being an actor against him either. I recall President Reagan was one too."

EXACTLY!!! :)
