Andy Garcia is Fed Up With People Who Glorify Che Guevara
Star Pulse .com ^
Posted on 04/25/2006 7:19:19 PM PDT by Number57
Andy Garcia is urging fashion-conscious rebels to stop wearing T-shirts emblazoned with the image of Latino revolutionary Ernesto 'Che' Guevara because they remind Cubans of terrible times. The actor accepts that Guevara stands for rebellion and is seen as a hero to many, but he sees the revolutionary as a butcher who killed millions of his countrymen.
Argentine-born Guevara helped current Cuban leader Fidel Castro overthrow General Fulgencio Batista's government in a guerrilla revolution in the late 1950s.
Garcia, who left Cuba when he was five, says, "I'd be curious to go around and ask them how much they really know about Che. Some people wearing the T-shirt don't even know his name. They know he's some sort of revolutionary, and to wear his image is cool because you feel like a revolutionary. Someone told me the other day that they asked one of these people if they were aware of all the executions that Che was a part of in Cuba and the guy said, 'Well, I don't know if that's true, as if it had been made up to discredit him.' I wish you could say it was made up because that would mean that all those people didn't die under his thumb. That's the tragedy."

Well, that's a nice start Andy. Now, how about showing some real cujones & take on those Hollywood jerks that keep running down to Cuba to meet with Fidal?

Q: Have you ever thought about going back?
A: Every day I think about going back.
Q: You could. People go to Cuba all the time from Canada or Mexico. It has become this sexy tourist destination because it's taboo.
A: Well, Cuba has always been sexy. (Laughs) It's sexy even in the state of decay it's in. But to go there is illegal. I would never go back under those conditions. Emotionally, I've never wanted to go back while Castro was there. I'll wait until he's dead and buried.

Here in Atlanta, someone actually named a restaurant "Che". I know it means "friend" in Spanish, but they must have been thinking of Guevara. It closed down.

"Argentine-born Guevara helped current Cuban leader Fidel Castro overthrow General Fulgencio Batista's government in a guerrilla revolution in the late 1950s." It's been posited that Castro tipped off The CIA and the Argentine government about Che's location so he could be knocked off. I guess Castro didn't want the competition.
As an aside, kids wearing Che tee shirts are not old enough to know about him anyway.

I actually lived in Argentina for 2 years. There, you call EVERYBODY Che'. It's like saying "hey, Mac"... You might say to a friend "Don't give me that b.s., Che'!" It's also used like this: "Che', Carlos, come here!"
The reason Ernesto was called El Che' is because he spoke like an Argentine throughout South and Central America -- Since he said things like, "Che', Fidel, let's kill some capitalist pigs," the NON-Argentines called him The Che'.
OK, history lesson's over. Back to your regularly scheduled programming....

From some star website ". . . He married Maria Victora in 1982 after 7 years of dating. They now have three daughters - Dominik, Daniella and Alessandra. Andy Garcia is said to be very protective of his family's privacy."
Even sexier after that tidbit. Never really looked into his bio much, just find him incredibly sexy. Maria is a lucky lady. Bet the daughters are gorgeous and that ol' Andy better be packin'.

I love that people wear Che Guevara t-shirts, it's the quickest way I've come across to correctly sum somebody up as a historical illiterate and unabashed moron.
One day, I was walking into the supermarket and saw a bicycle chained to post with positively asinine, vulgar, anti-American bumper stickers plastered all over it.
I was giggling at it and wondering what sort of jackass would display such stupidity so proudly. Suddenly the door to the liquor store next door opened and some fiftyish long-haired, mouth-breathing lump steps out, carrying a bottle of cheap wine and wearing a Che t-shirt.
I really couldn't help myself and I just busted out laughing at him.
I guffawed at him the whole time he was trying to unlock his bike, fumbling with the combination lock. I never laughed so hard in a guy's face like that.
He just looked like he was going to cry at my disrespect for his shallow nebulous political persona. He rode off in a huff, no doubt to get drunk and fancy himself a romantic revolutionary on his mom's couch.

Isn't he coming out with a new movie about the revolution? I'll pay the ten bucks for it to stay around!
It always irritates me to see these kids with Che, and I have asked them why they support a murderer, and they either don't know who he is, or just spout some communist BS. My kid bro has a shirt like it, with Communism Sucks written across the face. It's a real conversation starter for him.
