Dems Make Progress on Immigration Issue (D 42% - R 35%)
Rasmussen Reports ^

This is what happens when Republicans start governing like liberals. The waters get muddied and nobody know what you are any more. There is some good news in this poll for the GOP but if they continue to act like Lincoln Chaffe instead of Ronald Reagan then we can kiss '06 goodbye

Dems Make Progress on Immigration Issue

April 26, 2006--Before the immigration debate exploded on the national scene, Americans were evenly divided as to which political party they trusted more on the issue. After the earliest rounds of the debate, the GOP gained ground and were favored by a 37% to 31% margin.

Since then, Democrats have focused more attention on the enforcement side of the debate. DNC Chairman Howard Dean even stated that enforcement of the border is his party's top priority. As a result, Democrats appear to have won round two of the debate among the general public--42% now trust Dean's party more on this issue while 35% trust the GOP.

Democrats have gained ground primarily by solidifying their base--77% of Democrats now trust their party more on the issue than Republicans, up from 60% earlier. Democrats have also made gains among unaffiliated Americans. Republicans still trust their own party more on this issue by a 70% to 12% margin.

However, while Democrats have gained ground, they still trail among the 53% of Americans who say that immigration is very important in terms of how they will vote this November. Among this group, 43% trust the GOP more and 33% trust the Democrats. To the degree that intensity matters, that's good news for Bill Frist and his GOP colleagues in Congress.

Fifty-seven percent (57%) of Americans still favor building a barrier along the Mexican border (a number that jumps to 73% among those who consider the issue very important).

Just 26% of Americans have a favorable opinion of those who have marched and protested for immigrant rights. Fifty-four percent (54%) have an unfavorable view.

I wouldn't say the democrats are making progress. The republicans are failing but that doesn't spell success for democrats.

Regardless, the outcome is bad news for US.

Either way we loose. The Repubs get removed from office en masse and we have EVEN MORE liberal immigration policies under the Dems.

Things continue under the same line and the Administration gives its conservative base the one-fingered salute.

I think we realize it is no longer an issue of party. It is an issue of AMENSTY, of closing the border, of removing the debt load to taxpayers for the costs of 12 million illegals, of making illegals responsible for breaking the law, and maintaining the importance and significance of U.S. citzenship. To say nothing of our soverignty.

But, watch Washington try and shove AMNESTY down our throats just to get the issue off their dysfunctional backs.

Sad but true.

That's gonna cause some major heartburn around here.

The Rats have definitely gained some bragging rights but it's still early. My prediction right now is the Rats will gain 4 in the House and 2 in the Senate. The MSM have been pushing the notion that the Rats could take over the House and/or Senate but based on the real contested House seats at the very most the Rats could get up to 12 and 4 in the Senate which would still be devastating for the Republicans going into '08.

The president could turn this around today. All he has to do is hold a press conference and say that we're going to start enforcing the law. If you're in the country illegally, you better start making your departure plans. If you hire illegals, you have 60 days of amnesty to get rid of them before the prosecutions start. and he could tell the American people that if they want a wall, they should start donating time and money to those who can build it cheapest.

I know he won't do it but if he did, most of the opposition in the senate would crumble. Sure the illegals would riot, but that would just lead to an even speedier departure.

I agree.

His popularity and the future of the Republican Congress would be assured.

But I don't really think Bush cares at this point. He has his own agenda, regardless of how selfish, stupid, or misdirected it is, and he is apparently determined to follow it.

The only thing which can make him withdraw his heels from the mess he created is massive pressure from COngress - as in the Harriet Miers and Dubai Ports deal. But apparently a lot of COngressmen - Dems and Repubs are willing to risk the wrath of their constituents on this in the hope they will garner the Hispanic vote.

Perhaps that Englishman ( I can't rememerb his name)was right about Democracy not being a secure form of government.

How silly to say the democrat party is emphasizing enforcement. And national security.

But a sizeable % of the American people have not been educated as to how left wing the democrats are. The GOP's failure to be aggressive on that point leaves many Americans thinking there still are two mainstream parties. And that places America in danger because in time of uncertainty many people THINK they can just safely turn to the other party.

Prior to the last election the democrats (generic, of course) were leading in all the indicators.

The polls are for those who are incapable of thinking for themselves.

I defy anyone to tell me just what the democrat position is on immigration.

Judging from the latest consumer confidence numbers being at a four year high I would say that most Americans are going about their business enjoying life without too many worries about the future.

Most are certainly now staying awake nights worrying about illegals.

We know that Dean will do nothing to secure the border but remember, the average voters are numbskulls who will believe anything they hear, even Howard Dean's drivel. What this tells me is the Republicans need to push for strong border security and tougher laws regarding illegals, and distance themselves from the the RINO's and their amnesty nonsense. Then the Republicans will retake the lead on the issue.

President Bush and a group of senators yesterday reached general agreement on an immigration bill that includes a pathway to citizenship for many illegal aliens.
But left out of the closed-door White House meeting were senators who oppose a path to citizenship. The meeting even snubbed two men who had been considered allies of Mr. Bush on immigration -- Sen. John Cornyn, Texas Republican and chairman of the immigration subcommittee, and Sen. Jon Kyl, Arizona Republican.
Mr. Bush in brief remarks to the press said there was agreement to get "a bill that does not grant automatic amnesty to people, but a bill that says, somebody who is working here on a legal basis has the right to get in line to become a citizen." But senators, speaking afterward, said Mr. Bush was far more specific in the meeting.
"There was a pretty good consensus that what we have put into the Hagel-Martinez proposal here is the right way to go," said Sen. Mel Martinez, Florida Republican. "I think he was very clear [on] pathway to citizenship, so long as it goes to the back of the line, and he even opened the door here for something we've haggled back and forth on, that you can shrink the time for people to become citizens by simply enlarging the number of green cards."
And Sen. Sam Brownback, Kansas Republican, said Mr. Bush "endorsed the concept of an earned citizenship."
That would represent a substantial change on the part of the Bush administration, which just last year said it opposed a path to citizenship for those currently here illegally.
Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff told the Senate Judiciary Committee in October the administration didn't support "a path through which they can get their permanent residence or citizenship," and Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao echoed that: "We feel that a pathway to citizenship would reward those who have violated our laws."
The Hagel-Martinez bill would divide illegal aliens into three groups. Most of those who have been in the country for more than five years would be granted access to citizenship, those here more than two years but less than five years would have to go home first but would also be eligible for citizenship, while those here two years or less would not have a path.
Even as Mr. Bush is moving in that direction, the House majority leader yesterday rejected it.
"This idea that was being kicked around the Senate about providing some sort of amnesty for those who have been here five years or more, I just think it was a very big mistake," House Majority Leader John A. Boehner, Ohio Republican, said yesterday. "You are just inviting more people to come."
Still, the senators in yesterday's meeting were thrilled with where the debate is, and the direction Mr. Bush is headed.
"He hasn't endorsed the Senate bill, but I think it's a big step forward in that direction and gives assurances that if we pass legislation of that sort, that we'll have support from the president when we get into conference," said Sen. Arlen Specter, chairman of the Judiciary Committee.

And yet there are those on this forum who will openly support a Democrat who tells them what they want to hear.

Some here worship Lou Dobbs and want him to run for President or the Senate.

Napolitano was praised like a god for "declaring an emergency" as was Gov. Richardson of New Mexico.

Last year people here were going to vote for Hillary because she came out and said "illegal immigration is a problem".

Based on what you've said, imagine the support the Republicans could gather if they were to get tough on immigration! Republicans do lead in terms of 'credibility' and they would win in a landslide if they came out against Bush's plan. Right now, the 'yuck' factor in supporting pro-illegal Republicans will keep solid conservatives at home or will get less conservatives to vote Dem.

Come together and work as a team

What is going on is the one issue crowd are screaming and GOP are running scared

Plus ... The Liberals have been watching us for some time .. and they are jumping in the screaming match

We need to step back .. calm down and think clearly

Start at the State/Local level ... pass legistislation like Sonny Purdue did

And for pete's sake .. our side needs to stop giving the Dems ammo to hit us with

Take time to speak out BEFORE the Senate acts on this issue!

Sign the petition to "Enforce our Immigration Laws" by visiting the following link:
http://www.petitionusa.com/petition_immigration

After you sign, follow the prompts and send a personalized blast fax to your Congressman and Senators and let them know how you feel! You can also send multiple personalized faxes to large groups, (such as all Republicans or Democrats, etc.), with one simple action.

Also, keep up to date with the latest on the immigration debate by visiting Conservative Outpost at: http://www.conservativeoutpost.com

good post

I think if you go look at websites to both Left and right, there is a strong resounding theme of:

1) Enforce/seal the boarders (boarder security)
2) Do not reward people who violated our laws by coming here illegally
3) Concern for what other packages that the illegals bring (illnesses, cost of support, cost of incarceration)

I do know a few illegals Mexicans, for the most part they are people, human beings, who came to the US because there was no hope in Mexico for their family to have a better life. In the US they can get a job (albeit illegal) and at least support their family and actually improve their way of life. All they have to do is take a risk and travel across the boarder.

Now for my opinion:
1) I do not like having to support their children with my taxes.
2) I don't believe that if they are in country illegally, their children have auto citizenship (when born). That definition is something that should change. Think of the money the social security fund could save by not supporting/rewarding those who enter and then drop the anchor baby.
3) I do not support illegal immigrants ability to pull retirement checks.

As I look at the problems the US has, this situation could be worse if we did not have or we took away hope from those who are here. Think of France and their problems.

Legislation should do a couple things.
1) Reduce or eliminate rewards for those who cross the boarder. (No Free Lunch)
2) Increase boarder security/enforcement. (Really big issue on Left and right)
3) Not supply citizenship to those who broke the law, but if they will register, not a criminal and pay taxes, I might support the guest worker idea (3 years with renewal). But deportation if they commit a Felony in the US. (Again for those who are willing to work)
4) Not supply a path for those that do not pay taxes for at least 15 years to get social security benefits (Same as any other citizen here) And make same age requirements as I have or any other US citizen has for collecting those benefits.
5) Start up the sweeps to deport those who still want to stay here, but not follow the law.
6) More enforcement of companies who hire illegal immigrants and don't get fines for that practice.
7) From this date on, those who do not follow our laws, will be deported back to country of origin, if one cannot be determined, drop them in one of the hell hole countries by parachute and let them survive.

I am sure there are a few other things that need to be in the bill. But the emphasis should be that the US will enforce the rules and laws, and that those who elect not to follow those rules/laws don't and wont ever have another opportunity.

I would add to your list a wall/fence

I've never been a fan of the wall/fence ... for other reasons ... but I think it is needed to control the flow coming across the border .. it's way out of hand

White House Comment Line: 1-202-456-1111
Senator Bill Frist (TN) : 1-202-224-3344
Senator Lamar Alexander : 1-202-224-4944

NOTE: your representation may vary. Call and leave a comment, today and EVERY day.
My usual comments:

1. Your approach to immigration is WRONG. It betrays the people that elected you, and you need to re-think the problem.

2. PUT A STOP to illegal entry by whatever means is required - walls, guards, patrols, and any technology that works to catch these invaders. Your first duty is to protect the United States from invasion, and failure is INTOLERABLE!

3. Make illegal entry a FELONY, and a PERMANENT bar to legal residence or citizenship. NOTE: This would be a new law that would not necessarily apply to illegals already here, but ONLY if they register every 60 days. This is a problem to be handled separately, because we need to STOP THE INVASION FIRST!
(I know that many of you will think this is too lenient, but we need to address things by priority.)

4. Make hiring an illegal the first time a misdemeanor, but with a penalty of $2500 per day per illegal. This would DOUBLE for each new violation. The 4th violation should be a felony, with real, federal jail time attached.

5. Use appropriate technology to verify employment eligibility. Any ID card can be forged, so all employers should be required to submit candidates' SS ID numbers to a central data base for verification. They would receive a basic physical description and current employment status back for verification purposes. This could be done over the internet, or even with a modern cell phone, so there should be NO exceptions.

6. AFTER you do your duty with border enforcement, come back and address the problem of those already here. I don't need to hear about any so-called "comprehensive solution" until the invasion is halted!

In 20 years, since the last amnesty.

Actually, what President Bush said was that massive deportations are not realistic.

President Bush did not discount moderate deportations through attrition lasting 20 years.

The Dem base will probably militantly oppose any guest worker program because the unions will not allow it.

I suspect the American people oppose a guest worker program more fiercely than amnesty.
