Colorado school district drops “Winter Break,” returns to “Christmas Break”

FALCON, Colo. — A Colorado school district has decided to return to using the name “Christmas Break” instead of “Winter Break” for the name of its December Christmas vacation. A board member had contacted the Alliance Defense Fund in December asking for information affirming the school board’s legal right to reestablish the name (www.telladf.org/news/story.aspx?cid=3649).

“It’s ridiculous that we have come to the point where it takes an act of political courage to call December 25th exactly what it is--Christmas. The school board’s decision to return to the original ‘Christmas Break’ calendar reference is a matter of common sense. It does not promote religion and is perfectly constitutional,” said ADF Senior Legal Counsel Mike Johnson, who provided the board with the information it needed and praised the board’s decision in a recent letter (www.telladf.org/UserDocs/FalconLetter.pdf).

In the letter, Johnson noted that ADF is ready to advise and defend the board free of charge in the event its decision is challenged in court.

As part of ADF’s Christmas Project, ADF-allied attorneys contacted nearly 11,000 school districts nationwide in 2005 to inform them of the truth regarding religious expression at Christmastime. For more information on the project, visit www.saychristmas.org.

ADF is a legal alliance defending the right to hear and speak the Truth through strategy, training, funding, and litigation.

Conservative district east of Colorado Springs.

All they wanted was someone to turn to and go bat for them if the going got tough. Legal expenses can cause untold harm.

Good for ADF, and especially good for them!

It seems to me that the ADF can leverage a small amount of money and make it go very far. Before now, it seems like for a while only the Left had this kind of professional backup for ordinary people and organizations. That tended to lead to widespread intimidation of conservatives and organizations and kind of a domino effect.

Now with the ADF there, the Left is confronted with a choice between actually suing somebody for calling it "Christmas Break" or not. If they bring the lawsuit they look like fools. If they win the lawsuit, they fuel conservative anger without really affecting liberals very much (are liberals committed to this issue---only the super wacky left would care about this). If they don't bring a lawsuit, they end up taking a small step backward in their program to eliminate Christmas as part of American society---part of their larger plan to destroy American society altogether.

I am Jewish, by the way, and I support the idea of bringing back Christmas into being a part of American society. It enriches our society. By the way, in solidarity with the Left's attack on Christmas, the majority of synagogues have practically eliminated Chanukkah as a holiday.

Is true that Chanukkah was not considered one of the truly major Jewish holidays. I was told that it was elevated in importance to compete with Christmas, which had a certain lure for Jewish youth (the gifts, etc.) However, Chanukkah had become a part of the richness of American society as well.

Since most freepers are Christians, I assume you don't know about Chanukkah being downgraded, so I thought I'd tell you. In addition to the fact that Chanukkah used to complement Christmas well, it is a celebration all of the Maccabees---a family that led a guerrilla war against the oppressors of the Jews at that time. In addition, the menorah, one of the greatest symbols of Judaism, comes from Chanukkah.

I don't know how big a role Chanukkah played in Judaism traditionally, but I believe it is being downgraded below what it has ever been.

As a Christian who reads the Bible, I know there wouldn't have been a Christmas without Chanukkah. The Macabees, faithful to God, reclaimed and cleansed the temple after the abominations there by Antiochus Epiphanes. God has always protected and used His faithful remnant and He never breaks a promise. God bless you (and ADF)!

Thank you very much. God bless you and all of the Christian friends of the Jews.
