Sen. Specter Threatens to Block NSA Funds
AP ^ | April 27 2006 | Staff and agencies

Posted on 04/27/2006 9:27:16 AM PDT by jmc1969

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter said Thursday he is considering legislation to cut off funding for the Bush administration‘s secret domestic wiretapping program until he gets satisfactory answers about it from the White House.

Specter said he had informed President Bush about his intention and that he has attracted several potential co-sponsors. He said he‘s become increasingly frustrated in trying to elicit information about the program from senior White House officials at several public hearings.

"It is true that we have no assurance that the president would follow any statute that we enact," Specter said. He said he‘s considering adding an amendment to stop funding of the program to an Iraq war-hurricane relief bill being debated by the Senate this week and next.

"He said he‘s become increasingly frustrated in trying to elicit information about the program from senior White House officials at several public hearings."

That's because this is a classified national security program and responsible White House officials do not provide much information about such programs at public hearings. Perhaps Sen. Specter should try holding a closed private hearing, or maybe he should pick up the phone and talk to Alberto Gonzalez.

BINGO. Specter's alleged "loyalty" to the President (let alone the GOP) remains "not proven". I tell you, I think the chemo and radiation toasted his brain, not that it needed any extra degradation.

I'm wondering if Specter has already decided to retire after this term and so he doesn't care about support from GOP voters any more and he's moving rapidly to the left.

To sum up the impact of the "wiretapping" issue...

His plan for warrantless wiretaps of al-Qa’eda has compromised the privacy of countless ordinary Americans who receive calls in Arabic via portable satellite phone from tribal areas of the Hindu Kush.

Another great argument for term limits.

We need term limits because the average voter has abrogated to the incumbent their responsiblities to make an intelligent choice at the polls.

The best argument against democracy in the US is a five minute conversation with the average voter.

Arlen Spector, the guy that defended Ira Einhorn, who murdered Holly Maddux, stuffed her body into a trunk and left it to rot in his apartment, then went on the lam for 20 years or so in Ireland and France.

Once again, Spector is on the wrong side of an issue.

I heard that only 6% of the American public thinks that Islamofascist terrorism is a threat to America.

I wonder what they'll think after the first Islamofascist nuke goes off in NYC?

President Bush backed Specter because Specter was thought to be the most electable "Republican" candidate. Backing from President Bush was THE critical factor in Specter's primary fight. This part I understand.

What I don't understand is why we want Specter AT ALL.

Personally, I would be happier if Specter's seat were held by an RLD (Rabid Liberal Democrat).

Let me see if I can explain it to the good senator.

Robert E. Lee was an American citizen when he commanded the Army of Northern Virginia. The Army of Northern Virginia was operating on United States soil. As commander-in-chief of the US Army, Lincoln had the responsibility to defeat the Army of Northern Virginia. If he could have tapped Lee's military communications, Lincoln would have been irresponsible not to. If he did, because it was a military activity, he did not need a court order to do so, even though Lee was a US Citizen and the Army of Northern Virginia was operating in the United States.

Similarly, in WWII J. Edgar Hoover did not need a court order to listen to wireless communications sent to German spies in the United States -- even those that were U.S. Citizens. The Supreme Court so ruled, because the surveillance was done for military purposes.

So, unless someone believes that al Qaeda terrorists should be shown more deference than Robert E. Lee, Bush does not need a court order or a warrant to listen in on their communications for purposes of thwarting their military activities in United States.
