The National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) has provided the following website for veterans to gain access to their DD-214s online: http://vetrecs.archives.gov/ This may be particularly helpful when a veteran needs a copy of his DD-214 for employment purposes. NPRC is working to make it easier for veterans with computers and Internet access to obtain copies of documents from their military files. Military veterans and the next of kin of deceased former military members may now use a new online military personnel records system to request documents. Other individuals with a need for documents must still complete the Standard Form 180, which can be downloaded from the online web site. Because the requester will be asked to supply all information essential for NPRC to process the request, delays that normally occur when NPRC has to ask veterans for additional information will be minimized. The new web-based application was designed to provide better service on these requests by eliminating the records center's mailroom processing time.
Please pass this information on to former military personnel you may know and their dependents.
TOPICS: Government; News/Current Events
KEYWORDS: dd214; militaryrecords; nationalarchives
You all may need this at some point. I know of a Senator that should take advantage of this. The website has other records you can request too.

I just ordered mine, just for S&Gs. The last step is signing a request and snail-mailing it to the NPRC.

I actually registered an official copy of my DD-214 at the county courthouse. In case anything ever happens to me, my wife will need this document for all kinds of reasons. An attorney told me it was smart to do this and only cost a couple of dollars if I remember correctly. Just some friendly advice from one old retired Brother to another.

Cool! Maybe now I can get a copy of my dad's service record that my mother has so far refused to let me have a copy of!

I did the same thing, although it makes me a little nervous to have it available to anybody who'll pay for the copy. Helped when the title company for my refi lost the original. I will say that the hard copy I got from the NPRC was pretty lousy - I can only read parts of it because I know what they're supposed to say.

Many thanks - I've needed my tattered original on more occasions than I ever imagined when I stuck it into that envelope way back when.
Good thing they're kept private, too. I wouldn't want anyone on FR to know I didn't really get the Platinum Star when I took Pork Chop Hill back from Richtofen and the Spanish Armada...

Be careful that neither of your SSNs are compromised that way.
I seem to recall that some counties were (maybe they all did?) introducing logs for people wishing to view that sort of court file, requiring photo ID and signature?
I'm thinking it was a Florida county but can't be sure.

THe first time I separated from the USAF (long story) they told me to file my DD 214 at the courthouse. When I retired they no longer recommended this. Apparently the low life pond scum out there have accessed records at courthouses to steal identity. Glad to hear you can get it online now in case mine disappears.
To: BulletBobCo
Thanks. Worked like a charm. Wish all sites worked this smoothly.

I did the same thing years ago at the York County Court house. When I went back to get a copy they said they had no record. I will now have a back up copy.

By registering it at your local court house you made your DD 214 a public record. There have been cases of people using DD 214's registered at the court house to steal a person's identity.

It's only one more item in a list of items that one may have on file with the court house that may enable someone to steal another's vital records/identity. Real estate, marriage license, birth records, death certificates, judgements, liens, etc. etc.
