Two million Darfur refugees face food ration cut as aid cash runs out

The suffering of at least two million refugees in Darfur worsened still further yesterday when the United Nations said their food rations will be halved.
The UN's World Food Programme explained that a 50 per cent cut was necessary because donors had failed to provide enough money.

"This is one of the hardest decisions I have ever made," said James Morris, director of the WFP. "Haven't the people of Darfur suffered enough?"
More than two million refugees inhabiting squalid camps scattered across Darfur depend on the WFP. In Sudan, where the south is recovering from decades of civil war, the WFP feeds 6.1 million people.
This costs about £440 million. But donors have provided only about one third of this sum for 2006. America and Britain are the two most generous bilateral donors. Aside from Libya, no Arab state has contributed anything, despite windfall gains from high oil prices and Sudan's membership of the Arab League.
The WFP's only option was, said Mr Morris, to reduce the daily ration from 2,100 calories to 1,050 per person. The cut will take effect from next month.
Aid workers in Sudan had managed to reduce the severe malnutrition rate in Darfur to below the emergency level of 15 per cent.
But this key indicator is creeping upwards again, especially in Southern Darfur province, where Khartoum's Arab-dominated regime has launched a new offensive against black African rebels.
Some 300,000 people have died in Darfur since the outbreak of war three years ago. Including 200,000 refugees in neighbouring Chad, at least 2.2 million people have been forced from their homes.
Meanwhile, Europe is drumming up cash for Hamas.

I'd like to see the accounting records. It is the UN, after all.
Our elders NEVER give money to anyone, nor our deacons. If someone needs food, you buy the food and give it to them. The UN is just another bureaucracy. Just TRY holding them accountable.
I think most of those suffering are black Muslims ... where is the Red Crescent or other Muslim relief agencies?
The disgusting creeps at the UN are too busy spending BILLIONS building themselves a luxurious new headquarters to help these starving Africans. Is there any excuse in the world for having this scum holed up in NYC? They all ought to go back to the hellholes their governments have created in their home countries.

I wouldn't give the UN scum suckers a penny. The UN NGOs love using our tax dollars to fly out to Pretoria and pig out on on lobster, klip, foie gras and imported European sausages. The UN and its goosestepping NGO s are nothing more than the former USSR trying to go world-wide.
Yup. It's the Arab Muslims who are routing and killing them.
Maybe those UN bureaucrats could cut back on those 2 hour expense account lunches for a week and feed Darfur for a year. The UN is worthless filth.
And when exactly have these people done anything for themselves other than breed and starve? If I was in charge I'd be sending them small arms so they can go kick the butts of the people that are oppressing them .... and them some irrigation and farming equipment.
Darfur is a re-enactment of Ethiopia. Black moslems are the ones keeping the relief aid from going to the black indigenous people. This is mostly a political disaster. It will be interesting to see what the celebs and congress folk feel about Osama urging his minions to fight the UN peacekeepers who go in there. Will they suddenly decide that rabid moslems are a problem?
Meanwhile, Europe is drumming up cash for Hamas.
Perhaps we could use the money we are not giving Hamas to aid the children in Darfur.
I was under the impression that is was Arab Muslims trying to kill off the black people in Darfur.
One of the many ugly secrets of that ugly death cult, Islam, is that Arab racial superiority is one of its fundamental assumptions. These are Arab Muslims trying to put down African Muslims; of course, they had centuries of practice with this during their years as the biggest slave-traders in the world.
When you look back over the depressing history of Islam, one thing you will notice is how often Arab Muslims have attacked other Muslims, often with the excuse of restoring "Islamic purity" to less fanatical cultures. Yet Arabs as a whole have got to be one of the least productive groups, with the most primitive culture, on the face of the earth.
Africa is and has been a hole in which the rest of the world throws money and never sees results.
Like Haiti you can try but it will do no good.
Corruption and tribal warfare is the norm and it ain't gonna change.
So let's throw in the U.N. to straighten things out? Yeah right and pigs are flying out of Kofis ass.
In Darfur, "black moslems" are dying at the hands of the Muslim-run government.
In Ethiopia, black Muslims and Christians were dying at the ahnds of the Christian-run governmnet.
Look it up.
I don't think the Muslims in Darfur (or anywhere else in sub-Saharan Africa) "assume" that Arabs are "racially superior."
