"United 93" reminds a forgetful nation of 9/11 tragedy
Republicans For Fair Media ^ | April 30, 2006 | Daniel T. Zanoza

Posted on 04/30/2006 8:47:12 AM PDT by Daniel T. Zanoza

On Friday, April 28th, the movie "United 93" was released in theaters across the nation. The Universal Studios film is a fictional rendition of the events which occurred on the fourth airplane high-jacked by Islamic terrorists on September 11th, 2001. Paul Greengrass, who wrote and directed "United 93," depicts how heroic passengers attempted to regain control of a doomed aircraft which hijackers were planning to crash into the Capitol building in Washington, D.C. Those who acted on that day may have saved hundreds or even thousands of innocent lives. United Airlines flight 93 ended up slamming into the ground in a Pennsylvania field, killing all aboard, but leaving a legacy which will be remembered in American lore for years to come.

Though I have not seen the film, reports indicate the movie is powerful beyond description. Producers of "United 93" made the effort to interview family members of every crash victim. Ten per cent of the film's first weekend revenues will be added to a fund for a memorial created to honor the memory of what happened on that fateful day.

Unbelievably, there have been some who call the film controversial. Though filmmakers carefully consulted family members of victims, researched material from authorities pertaining to what took place on Flight 93 and consulted those who grappled with the situation on the ground, some critics have found other reasons to suggest the movie is inappropriate for viewing at this time.

Those who follow this logic claim the picture is too painful and was made too soon after one of the greatest tragedies in American history. They say those who see the film are forced to relive the troubling emotions of 9/11. Though nearly everyone reports "United 93" was done with taste and respect for those who died in the crash, detractors say Americans are not ready to relive the event.

In retrospect, I believe the movie is exactly what Americans need to see. Most will admit the public has a short memory and, at times, this is a good thing when it comes to some tragedies. There is no need to rehash over and over events like acts of God or negative experiences which could not be prevented. But there are times when it is important to understand and remember what happened during catastrophes like 9/11 and the showing of "United 93" surely serves that purpose. The film should shake the memories of the public and remind us of the fact that we are at war against a ruthless enemy that thinks nothing of killing innocent men, women and children.

We all remember our feelings of pain and outrage when the events of 9/11 unfolded. But Americans also should be reminded of the patriotism and togetherness we all felt in those days. This is a good thing.

However, there are those who do not want the nation's memory jogged. They believe, in some cases for political reasons, the events of 9/11 are best forgotten. Often, this mindset results from the hatred of George W. Bush and the policy involving America's war on terrorism. Sadly, in other situations, people do not want their lives complicated by being forced to relive something that makes them uncomfortable, even though it didn't touch their lives directly. But 9/11 did have an impact on most Americans on a personal level and it is important to remember why.

The showing of "United 93" is not controversial. Though it is reported the film depicts great violence, that's what happened on a fateful day in 2001. It is a good thing Americans not only remember those who perished on Flight 93, it is also a good thing the country remembers what they perished for.

All members of Congress and the Senate should be forced to watch this movie even if they have to duct tape and toothpick their eyes open with side blinders to make them look forward at all times.

No tissues allowed no hankies they should taste every tear the American people have tasted and it should burn into their skulls like a brading iron never to forget why we are fighting for America !

A movie so powerful it opening third this weekend behind "Stick It" and "RV."

I blame the advertising. The trailer (which shows quite often around here) makes it look rather like a made-for-TV movie.

I am going to watch it myself. Remember the people who were clamoring to Farenheit9/11? Same people are now saying "it's too soon"

My wife doesn't want to watch the movie... then I get this mental picture of an ostrich with its in the sand when I look at her.

Word-of-mouth will tell more.

Buzz on RV: "It sucks."
Buzz on F/93: "Gotta see this!"

It's actually showing in fewer theaters that #1 and #2.

I think word of mouth will build the audiences for this movie, which I saw last night. Very moving. Very powerful. Very well done. Reawkened some very angry feelings for the demented Islamofascists. "Religion of Peace" my @$$.

You must persuade her to go. Bribe her if you have to. She will not regret it.

I, my husband and a friend went on opening day, Thursday. My husband & I thought it was great but my friend said during the movie that the government was doing a Pearl Harbor. She insists flight 93 was shot down and that 9/11 was allowed to happen so Bush could go to war.

I was shocked since we have never really talked politics and I had no idea she thought that way. What a let down from a freind.

It opened 3rd in total gross, but it didn't open in as many theaters as the top 2 films. It actually grossed more per theater than the top 2.

I wanted to see it this weekend but it isn't playing yet in this area (last refuge of the libs). If it gets here many will attend. Don't think the left doesn't inject politics into movie distribution.

Exactly, this movie is a poignant reminder of how close the war is to Americans. They can hit home again, and probably will. The left surrender monkeys want to get out of Iraq and cave to the psychopath in Tehran. We can't let it happen.

Great flick!!!! All Americans should see it. Note the evident transfer of mood and action from pre 911 to post 911 in the military, the air controllers and the doomed passengers on United Flight 93. Although the film is totally apolitical, anyone with half a brain could see the country and key operating people did not have a clue that something like this would ever happen. You can thank Bill, Hilllary Clinton and the entire Democrat Party for that. Yep, and vote 'em again, you soon get a taste of Iranian supplied Nukes. Your kiddies and wives will just love that!!! Yeah, America, you don't have a clue as to what's coming. Your Democrat Party is and has actively aiding and abetting our enemies form the gitgo!!!!

Tell her, if Bush just wanted an excuse to go to war, the 2 towers crumbling to the earth would've been excuse enough for him.

And I like the excuse that Bush went to war in Iraq for the oil - if so, why are the gas prices so high.

I intend to see this, but my wife doesn't want to. She is very courageous and well aware of meaning of it all. Don't be too hard on your wife. I suspect that many people don't want to relive this tragedy though they are not lacking in courage or awareness.

IT'S TOO SOON! IT'S TOO SOON!

But a movie about Bush "lying" about 9/11 is made instantaneously.

It's all Democrat propaganda--either the lying leaders or the mindless morons who follow and parrot them.

When the movie ended last night, the theatre was black and silent. A man stood up and loudly proclaimed "THIS WILL HAPPEN AGAIN IF THE BORDERS ARE NOT SECURED".

Saw the movie yesterday. Generally excellent. I did think, however, that it failed to identify the underlying hatred. I think it requires more than an islamofascist mindset to commit these unspeakable acts.
