For instance, Oscar Letelier was suspected of being a paid agent of both the East Germany and Cuba when he was killed in Washington, DC:

Orlando Letelier - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

During the FBI investigation into Letelier’s assassination, the contents of the briefcase he had with him were copied and leaked to Rowland Evans and Robert Novak of the Washington Times before being returned to his widow. The documents show that Letelier was in constant contact with the surviving political leadership of the various parties that made up the Popular Unity coalition exiled in East Berlin, been given refuge and supported by the East German Government during their stay. The FBI suspected that these individuals had been recruited by the Stasi. Documents in the briefcase showed that Letelier had maintained contact with Salvador Allende’s daughter, Beatriz Allende who was married to Cuban DGI station chief Luis Fernandez Ona.

According to the documents, Letelier was able to receive funding of $5,000 a month from the Cuban government and under the supervision of Beatriz Allende, he used his contacts within the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS) and western human rights groups to organize a campaign within the United Nations as well as the US Congress to isolate the new Chilean government, also know as Operation TOUCAN. This organized pressure on Pinochet’s government was thought to have been closely coordinated by the Cuban and Soviet governments, using individuals like Letelier to implement these efforts. Letelier’s briefcase also contained his address book which contained the names of dozens of known and suspected East Block intelligence agents. All correspondence between Letelier and individuals in Cuba had been handled via Julian Rizo, who used his diplomatic status to hide his activities.

Letelier and Goodfellow founded the Center For International Policy together.

Excellent work by Verner. One detail: Goodfellow's position with CIP was actually deputy director. The person who helped Letelier found the organization in 1975 was Lindsay Mattison, who also helped Letelier found a similar group called the Center for Development Policy (CDP) in 1977. Some other tidbits: CIP's director was a State Department friend of Letelier's named Donald Ranard. CIP also had an early staffer named Susan Weber who had previously been registered under the Foreign Agents Registration Act as an employee of the Soviet embassy, working as a copyeditor for Soviet Life. CIP's funding came mainly from the Fund for Peace with support from the Rubin Foundation, Ruth Mott Fund, and Stern Fund. (Source: S. Steven Powell, Covert Cadre: Inside the Institute for Policy Studies, 236-237.)

I'm in the midst of following the dots, thanks to Jennifer and to you.

Sam, and all:
I encourage us all to share this document with everyone we know, friends, email groups, bloggers, and ask them to pass it along too. Have any contacts in the media? Send it to them as well. It's maddening for me to find out after all this time, and all the kudos Dana Priest has received, we have not been made aware of her personal connections.

If Richard Melon Scaife's wife were a reporter for The Washington Times, writing about Hillary, don't you think every word she wrote would be held up to intense scrutiny and scorn? Certainly she wouldn't have been allowed to write a single column without having to disclose her personal bio.

Thanks for that info.

As you probably know, the CIP seems to have had a lot of co-founders, including James Morrell. So I'm not sure what Goodfellow's exact role was at the time. He is now its Executive Director.

Again, you probably know this, but others may not--but the CIP is a spinoff of a spinoff.

It was born out of the so-called Government Accounting Project:

GAP - Government Accountability Project
http://www.whistleblower.org/template/index.cfm

Which in turn was born out of the Institute of Policies Studies:

Institute for Policy Studies - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Institute_for_Policy_Studies

Which was really just a Communist operation:

Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and the IPS
http://www.brookesnews.com/062002fisa.html

And it is clear that the apple has not fallen one inch from the tree. The CIP is just as Communist in their leanings as the IPS.

BTW, all or some of these people were very heavily involved in the castration of the CIA (and the rest of the US intel community) by the Church Committee.

And they had a major hand in crafting the FISA courts, as well:

Thanks, YaYa. And you're exactly right about the outrage we'd hear if a reporter was found to have conservative ties.

Priest has been a reporter for years, and her political connections have never been mentioned before.

Of course that is true of some many in our one party media.

I know Susan Weber is not an uncommon name, but is this Susan Weber the same person as Susan Weber Soros, born 1957 in NYC, married to George Soros 1983, now divorced.

From other sources SWS's CV:

Susan Weber Soros PhD BA Art History, Barnard College, Columbia University, New York, USA, 1977. Work experience: Director and Faculty Member, The Bard Graduate Center, New York, USA, 1992; Founder and Publisher, Source Notes in the History of Art, USA, 1980.

Still somewhere between 1977 and early 80s there could have been a stint at Soviet Life? Any ideas?

Which is why "W" knew, to keep anything secret, he would have to bypass the FISA courts - which are simply a conduit to the traitors.

Why do you think the libs hate his "Western White house"? He can do business there and they have no bugs or ability to get close enough with surveillance equipment to eavesdrop. Which is why the "WWH" was built. (Remember, Pres. Bush1 was head of the CIA - the Bushes know what goes on and how to circumvent the traitors

Thanks for the links. There's a whole slew of these groups with interlocking personnel and it's a chore to keep track of them all without a scorecard. IPS is definitely near the heart of the spider web, along with the Fund for Peace, which has shared office space with CIP and several related groups.

I don't know, but that'd be pretty interesting if it were the case.

The source I was quoting indicated that Weber's registration as a Soviet employee was prior to her work at CIP, which may mean her stint with Soviet Life was before 1977. Here's a link mentioning her, along with some other interesting information about CIP, Anthony Lake, and others:

William F. Jasper, "Security Risk for CIA: Plumbing the depths of Anthony Lake's dubious past", The New American, Vol. 13, No. 02, January 20, 1997

The Senate will surely want to closely scrutinize Lake's involvement with the Center for International Policy (CIP) in Washington, DC. As an official consultant for the CIP during the 1970s, Lake was an associate of Orlando Letelier, who served on the CIP's board of directors. Letelier and Lake were also connected through their mutual involvement in the Institute for Policy Studies, a Marxist think tank with numerous ties to communist intelligence agencies. When Letelier was killed by a car bomb, incriminating documents found in his briefcase pointed to many highly placed people. One of those was Richard Feinberg. Feinberg resigned from the Treasury Department to avoid investigation into his own involvement with the Letelier network. Also among the briefcase contents was a letter from radical activist Elizabeth Farnsworth cautioning Letelier against mentioning Feinberg's name because that might jeopardize his reputation and career at Treasury and his usefulness to the cause. Yet Anthony Lake, who at that time was serving as director of President Carter's State Department Policy Planning Staff, hired Feinberg on at State.

Ms. Farnsworth also wrote admiringly to Letelier of the good work that "Bill Goodfellow" was accomplishing for the revolution. She was referring, of course, to William Goodfellow, the CIP director, who is a very bad fellow. How bad? Bad enough to stubbornly defend the murderous Khmer Rouge communists in Cambodia long after most leftists had decided the genocidal slaughter was just too obvious to deny anymore.

Still another sterling staff member with Lake at CIP was Susan Weber, a former editor of Soviet Life, the official propaganda organ published at the Soviet embassy for American consumption. In that communist endeavor, Ms. Weber was forced to register as an agent of a "foreign power." At CIP, she could carry out essentially the same task without the inconvenience of registering. Another CIP consultant was Edwin Martin, who was identified to intelligence authorities in 1947 as a member of a Soviet spy ring. When you start tugging on the CIP thread, you end up at the Fund For Peace (FFP), long one of the most openly pro-communist outfits in the country. The CIP was founded by, and is funded by, the FFP. A longtime trustee of the Fund was Louise R. Berman. And who is she? A longtime Red and hard-core Stalinist, Berman was the subject of extensive congressional investigation into communist activities during the 1940s and 50s. She was a contact and a courier for Stalin's NKVD (precursor to the KGB) and GRU (military intelligence) agents in the U.S. and worked with J. Peters, the Kremlin's top Comintern representative on the central committee of the Communist Party, USA. Berman is only one of many notorious communists and subversives involved with the CIP/FFP network in which Lake operated for many years.

They are still married. You're thinking of Soros' first wife, Anneliese.

* Institute for Policy Studies :
Phyllis Benning of the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS) appeared on a TV talk show a few months ago during which she claimed that no link between Al-Qaeda and Iraq was established. Yet, a couple of days earlier I watched an edition of CBS’ 60 Minutes in which an Israeli intelligence official was interviewed who claimed that the Israelis have captured documents that do establish such a relationship. ... What do all of these organizations [IPS, IPB, PAN, & HAP] have in common? Cora Weiss.
Cora Weiss is the daughter of Faberge millionaire and Soviet-phile Samuel Rubin. She is the president of the Samuel Rubin Foundation, which finances a host of communist causes. As well as president of her father’s foundation, Cora is president of the IPB, president of the HAP, an international representative of the PAN, and the principal financier of the IPS, which was founded by a grant from the Rubin Foundation. ...
In 1983, [Cora] Weiss was a delegate to an IPS sponsored US-USSR confab for disarmament. Delegates included members of the Riverside Church, which is allied with the National Council of Churches (NCC) and World Council of Churches (WCC). ...
The anti-Americanism of Riverside, the NCC and the WCC is well known. All three organizations were advocates for the North Vietnamese. All three organizations were advocates for Marxists revolutions in Africa. (Indeed, the WCC contributed to Robert Mugabe’s Marxist army.) All three organizations were advocates for the Marxist revolutions in Central America in the 1980’s. All three protested the deployment of Pershing missiles in Europe. All three condemned the Gulf War. All three condemned US military action against the Taliban.
Weiss is definitely plugged in to the good old comrade’s network. For example, the IPS Board of Directors contains such liberal luminaries as Harry Belafonte, Time magazine journalist Barbara Ehrenreich, and editor of The Nation magazine Katrina vanden Heuvel (who was formerly the director of the IPS’s Transnational Institute).
Each of these people are well known for their unrepentant leftwing commitments. Ehrenreich is the Vice–Chair of the Democratic Socialists of America. [Katrina] vanden Heuvel, is a staunch apologist for socialism. Belafonte was a founding member of the Hollywood chapter of SANE, a precursor of PAN. In December 2000, he received an honorary degree from Cuba's Higher Arts Institute. Radio Havana reported that Belafonte said Cuba has always been an artistic haven for people who struggle for the liberation of humanity.
Cora’s old comrade network is incestuous as well. Peter Weiss, Cora’s husband, was the first chairman of the IPS, and is a member of the HAP board. He is a member of the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) and the Center for Constitutional Rights. The NLG is a communist proxy group. Both it and the Center for Constitutional Rights litigate government counter-intelligence activities.
