Society never quite lived up to the old-fashioned values that we tend to hear about. But at least people aspired to hav lives of stable marriages, well-behaved children, nice houses, in nice neighborhoods, with Dad at work, and Mom keeping an eye on the kids as they play outside.
It seems like that kind of life, while it may not have been killed by the sexual revolution and change in social values that occured after the 1950's, certainly disappeared as a cultural value and norm.
And yet, even damaged young people, from sordid backgrounds, can look around themselves and say, "Wouldn't it be nice if we lived that way ..."
Who killed the dream?
