Yes, they are food service employees mainly ... and people who like to block traffic. Most of the taco joints in my neighborhood were closed. So ...

The surprise is it won't impact.

But in a neighborhood where every other storefront seems to house a tacqueria, you would have been hard-pressed to find a burrito.

A day without heartburn??

(Or a day without gas??)

I didn't have any rice or beans today. I guess they showed me. Of course, I didn't have to have them running their uninsured cars into me and standing in the welfare line next to my office either.

I hope his customers read the article and cancel the jobs he had lined up.

The first question I'd ask the replacement landscaper was whether they were out working on May 1st.

Water cooler quote heard in my office today: "I don't care if they come to American and want to be Americans. I have a problem with them coming to America and wanting to be Mexicans."

Love it!

Indeed! Unlike the immigrants before them whom they often refer to, they seek to transplant Mexico here instead of joining the melting pot, learning English, and getting with the existing program.

If you ask me, probably the single worst thing about them coming here is that they utterly ruin neighborhoods by moving 2-4 entire families, often 20 or so people, into a single house. Apparently there's nothing that anyone can do about that. But who wants to live in a neighborhood with residents like that. It ruins the neighborhood and reduces property values.

Folks get home earlier because the traffic is lighter. Shopping is more pleasant. Classrooms, in LA particularly, are far less crowded.

They aren't needed, President Bush. They can go home to Mexico.

Let me tell you ... I recently completed phase one of my home remodel. I decided to be my own contractor. I hired Hispanics because they were cheaper.

BUT ... the work was substandard and they often did not show up for work. I'm now entering phase two where I am actually tearing out some of the work that was performed in the first phase. At my own expense.

I'm not saying all Hispanic construction workers are bad. Some are very good. But I had no recourse and had to absorb the losses. If I did it again, I would not hire illegal workers at all.

The Aztecs..what a great culture...

The most common form of sacrifice was performed outside, on the top of a great pyramid. The victim was spread-eagled on a round stone, with his back arched. His limbs were held, while a priest used an obsidian knife to cut under the rib cage and remove his heart.

Same in San Diego. It was great. It is time to either liberate Mexico or send their people back home with instruction booklets on capitalism and the dangers of liberism and elitism.......

"At the state Capitol in Sacramento, the California Legislature canceled its floor sessions and the two onsite cafeterias remained latched because not enough employees showed up. Yet many large manufacturers, including the Farmer John meatpacking plant in Los Angeles and Gallo Wine's plants in Modesto, Fresno, Sonoma and other cities reported they were near fully staffed."

Forget the nonexistent traffic today, THIS is THE great unforeseen benefit. If they're not in session, they can't screw anything else up!

In Georgia, it was an absolute failure.

I can attest to that. Absolutely no difference except MARTA was less crowded.

These employers who caved in will be sorry. They have shown that they are not in charge. There will be more protests and more and more workers will be taking days off. It's going to be alot harder for employers to crack down later. Frankly, it they can't afford to pay their employees a decent wage, then maybe they don't need to be in business.

Well, you've got a lot of guts admitting that...Do you also shoplift and leave restaurants with 'their' silverware??? It is cheaper than buying your own...

If I did it again, I would not hire illegal workers at all.

If they start enforcing the law, maybe you'll end up in jail...

It was the sound of Americans doing the work Americans would do if illegal aliens weren't doing it for less.

"Traffic on the highways was a heckuva lot less and easy to get around today. I love this day without illegals. Everyday please!"

I noticed that as well, the usual hour plus trip into Orange County (CA) took about 35 minutes, coming back only about 5 more....
Who'd a thunk it!

(PS: not sure if it was less vehicles or just fewer weird/slow/erratic/irritating freeway challenged illegals, but it was nice. I'm told the trucks into and out of the harbor were at least somewhat immigrant free also - must have been nice on the 710.)

Diana,

I let it be known that I would be doing business as usual today and there would be no rescheduling. Anyone who chose to alter hours or not show up would be out my business henceforth.

I got a couple takers, my usual breakfast restaurant boycotted so I went to another that did not, and I will not return to the old restaurant. Both restaurants are owned and run by immigrants, just one group screwed themselves.
