Welfare to kids of illegals at $276 million (Los Angeles County)
Los Angeles Daily News ^ | 04/26/2006 | Troy Anderson

Posted on 05/02/2006 5:20:30 AM PDT by kingattax

Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich said Tuesday that he will tell Congress that close to 100,000 children of illegal immigrants in the county collect $276 million in annual welfare benefits.

Antonovich, who is in Washington with the Board of Supervisors, will meet with congressional representatives and provide information about the impact of illegal immigration on county services.

Antonovich said 98,703 children of 57,458 undocumented parents received Cal-WORKS welfare checks in January, or a total of 156,161 recipients.

"If incorporated into a city, it would be the sixth-largest city in Los Angeles County," Antonovich said in a statement Tuesday. "While legal immigration is a positive influence on our culture and economy ... in public safety, health care and public social services, illegals cost county taxpayers nearly three quarters of a billion dollars a year."

Shirley Christensen, spokeswoman for the Department of Public Social Services, said her office provided the data to Antonovich.

"What I want to make clear is the children we aid are legally eligible to be aided," Christensen said. "They are the children of undocumented parents, but they themselves are not undocumented. They were born in this country."

come amid a debate in Congress and across the nation about illegal immigration.

No reliable studies have been conducted on the economic impact illegal immigrants have on California government budgets, according to a study by the Public Policy Institute of California.

In 2004, the Government Accountability Office concluded there was insufficient information to establish the costs to states of educating illegal immigrant children.

Some in the immigration debate say illegal immigrants are a drain on public coffers. Others say illegal immigrants pay more in taxes than they receive in services.

Illegal immigrants are not eligible for many government services, but they can use the public health care system and their U.S.-born children are eligible for welfare.

Yes an election year and what you are seeing is vote buying via entitlements with your tax dollars. Soon (when the minority are paying all the taxes and the majority are getting handouts) they won't want your vote, only your tax dollars.

In 2005 43 million LEGALs didn't pay any taxes and that will only increase.

How about a "Day of Protest" where no government checks are cut for any illegals, and no government services (such as school and MEDICAD) are provided?

The media and the Democrats are throwing gas on the flames. They actually want immigrant demonstrations or riots so they can say here's another problem, and "it's Bush's fault". It also fits their usual "class warfare" theme, the same line that has been used by Marx, Lenin, Stalin, Mao, and other socialist dictatorships for decades. I think the Democrat Party and other socialists have helped to organize the demonstrations. In the Fall 2006 elections, the Democrats will say the Bush administration is prejudiced against Hispanics (and Katrina blacks, etc.) even though Bush is simply trying to find a way to deal with the flood of illegals. The Democrats are engaged in class warfare.

Good point.

Hopefully legal immigrants and those that have become citizens, and the rest of our citizens, will wise up to corporate America's push to create a stable 'slave labor' pool where the government provides medical needs, welfare, unemployment, etc. as they (corporations) reduce dump their labor overhead at the US taxpayers expense.

The illegals 'demanding' rights in direct violation of US law of unlawful entry, are exposing the push by some large socialist / communist groups who want to see the destruction of Capitalism and the American way of life.

Meanwhile, all politicians refusing to act to enforce federal law as to ignore the invasion have violated their oaths of office.

W could simply use his power of Executive Order to have the wall built and to place troops on the border, but he won't.

My niece is an OB/GYN who took her pre-med at HAAAAVVAAAAADDD! Needless to say, she emerged from that experience a FLAMING, BLEEDING HEART LIBERAL.

Upon completing her medical training, she interned at a hospital near the border in San Diego.

It was there that a mystical transformation took place: She began to connect the heavy deductions from the GROSS EARNINGS for which she busted her butt for as many as 72 virtually sleepless hours in a row with the taxis and jalopies regularly sliding to the curb in front of the ER.

Many of them contained pregnant illegals who won the race to deliver their babies HERE. She caught many of those babies who, under the current -- and ERRONEOUS -- interpretation of the 14th Amendment were IMMEDIATELY NEW AMERICANS. The mother – who, obviously, could not care for the child if she were back in her native land -- could not be deported now even if the INS and the political bosses WANTED her deported . And as the mother of a new US citizen, the woman could remain here for about as long as she cared to – and that was usually for life.

Most of those patients were welfare recipients and the deliveries were charity cases: The bill for the hospital’s – and HER services – were routinely spread over the bills of those who DO pay. And what the other users of those facilities don't cover went back to the taxpayers.
And since my niece was now a taxpayer, they were costing HER.

And while she may not exactly be a libertarian, she’s is today a LOOONNNNG way from Haaaavaaaaaad.

And just so the bleeders who might see this don’t think me some sort of ethnocentric bigot, I submit this problem is MORE than just about illegals.

Before my oldest daughter (Kim) was born at University Hospital in Cleveland in 1967, I sat in the main lobby as welfare mother-to-be after welfare mother-to-be shuffled through the door to the maternity ER for THEIR free deliveries.

Before WE could take OUR daughter home, I had to cough up over 3 grand. And that was a great deal of dough in 1967, especially for a guy just out of the USAF.

As I wrote the check, I remembered the magazine article I’d recently read by a hospital administrator from Massachusetts who admitted that all US hospitals practiced a form of medical Marxism, spreading the costs of care for indigents over the bills of those who DO pay for care. Given the move to socialism here, it probably will never be otherwise: Not counting Byzantine complexity and confusion, government produces – and has -- NOTHING unless it first takes it from some PERSON. SOMEBODY ALWAYS PAYS.

Look, I have a big enough problem paying for the 3rd and 4th generation slackers and welfare bums who were BORN here.

It’s time we stopped paying for those who were not.

Good post, kingattax!
Strange, but I don't see that any of the `Open Borders' Freepers have yet made an appearance to call you a Nazi . . . I would ping them, but they're the biggest pains in the ....
They weren't shy yesterday recommending--to those of us opposed to our tax dollars subsidizing illegal aliens and their children--that we go to Storm Front.
What is it about "illegal" they can't understand?

NO AMNESTY!

Amen to your post. This one issue is a HUGE cost to taxpayers and IF the republicans had any sense at all- this would be a huge winning issue for November elections.
I hope this information and all the related illegal costs are discussed and noted more on the reliable news stations.

Why was you bill $3000 for child birth back in 1967?

Mine was $500 in 1968?

Not all births are the same. The average child birth cost of today is over $10,000, with some costing less and others much more.

even though Bush is simply trying to find a way to deal with the flood of illegals.

Bush doesn't need to find a way to deal with illegls, it is clearly spelled out for him in the Constitution and immigration laws already on the books.

HE has to enforce those rules but doesn't. He's not part of the solution, rather, he's part of the problem.

Herodian,
Cleveland probably had more welfare mothers than where you lived. And we delivered at McDonald House of University Hospitals, part of the Case-Western Reserve teaching system.

If you know Cleveland, you know that the otherwise cultural center of the University Circle area (home of the Cleveland Orchestra at Severence Hall, art museum, etc) is -- at least, was -- surrounded by some of the worst low income housing in the city.

Umm right.. sure boxcars, then taken out into the desert and shot and dumped in a big pit and covered over.....

Sheeesh... you people...

Look, it's very simple:

Make the cost of hiring illegals outweigh the benefits [cheap labor]. Do that by imposing heavy fines and even jail time on companies and executives who "look the other way" and hire illegals.

Close up all social services to illegals.

Close down/Lock down the border... Wall, Marines, Nat'l Guard, Land mines.. I don't care what it takes... LOCK IT DOWN!

Essentially, by taking away the benefits that make illegal crossings attractive, they will self deport, and stay home.

If they want back in, they can damn well knock on the door and go through the process we require of any other immigrants.

This is the job Bush and Congress SHOULD be doing, but aren't.

And don't tell me I'll be lost w/out cheap illegal labor.. I wash my own cars, cut my own grass, tend to my own garden, and paint my own house...

They'll just stay here and start committing crimes. Even the life of a thief is better than what many of them have to go back to.

We already have the criminal problem.... hopefully, what I'm suggesting will take care of a majority of illegals.

Appeasement, Amnesty, guest worker, capitulation... will only encourage the flood and not stem it.

Guest worker... isn't that a euphemism for government sanctioned slavery? Where's the outcry over that?

Sure.. uh huh.. first I don't believe it... lip service... typical crap that's been coming out of DC for years... two... they renamed guest worker to temporary worker... right, with the full expectation that they will dutifly wait in line... uh huh.. right... They'l just use that chance to get accross the border and flee.... same ol, same ol....

Not buying it...

What I might believe... ACTION NOW... words later....

SHUT DOWN THE DAMN BORDER!!

From another thread..

Before they were caught at the border, the [Iraqi] men were arrested in Mexico carrying Greek passports. They were held almost a month for entering Mexico illegally. But we’re told the Mexican government released them and told them to “go north”.
