US Vice President Dick Cheney said he knows he has a poor public image but did not see the need to spend time improving it.
In an interview with Vanity Fair Magazine, he also said he has no doubts the United States did "what needed to be done" in Iraq and he rejected the caricature of him as the power behind the throne.
"I think we have created a system that works for this president and for me, in terms of my ability to be able to contribute and participate in the process," he said.
Polls have shown Cheney's popularity hovering around the 20 per cent mark.
"My image might be better out there ... if I spent more time as a public figure trying to improve my image, but that's not why I'm here," Cheney said.
Asked if, during his "darkest night", he had any doubt about the administration's course, the vice president answered, "No ... I think we've done what needed to be done."

I love this guy.
I think the MSM need to realise this is NOT a popularity contest.
They'll lose a few seats but they will retain control of both Houses; trust me on this one. If I'm wrong, remind me on November 8th that I was wrong.
Regarding immigration and the borders, I'd prefer they were needlepointing. They'd do less harm.
Well i will put my money on the Pubbies.
The MSM never reflects true public opinion or the opinion of those who really vote .
Perfect.
That calls for elaboration.
By the way, however inadvertant, you made me think of a new tagline.
Cheney does Popeye:
I ams what I ams.
Because the MSM says so. If the polls were conducted, they would probably show that 70% or more of these respondents couldn't pick him out of a series of photographs. I wish he was more popular, I think he would be an awesome president.
Excellent!
Perhaps we're better off that this administration hasn't bothered to play the PR game. Look at how much effort Clinton spent on daily PR spin and constant campaigning just to stay in office, and look at what that left us open to in terms of a major economic recession and unprecidented terrorist attacks. However, I wouldn't object to some effort being expended on PR. It's at the point where all someone on the left has to do to win (in his weak mind) a political argument is to utter code words or phrases like "Halliburton" or "oil" or "Bush lied."
