Minutemen to strike back
Cross-country caravan hopes to foster supportJason Newell and Megan Blaney, Staff Writers
San Bernardino County Sun
On the heels of Monday's massive immigrant boycott, members of one high-profile group will fire up their RVs, cars and trucks today to build momentum for the other side.
[FReeper] Lyman Stucky, of San Bernardino is driving the pace car
that is leading the Minuteman Project across the country to Washington DC
to ask the leaders to enforce the laws prohibiting illegal immigration.
The Minuteman Project will launch a cross-country caravan tour today in Los Angeles, hoping to stir national support for a crackdown at the border and spotlight the harmful effects of illegal immigration. From the time the caravan speeds through the Inland Empire to when it rolls into Washington, D.C., on May 12, participants say they hope to have energized voters and enlisted more members to their cause.
The Minuteman Project represents the "people in America who are tired of excuses and stalling and political issues getting in the way of our sealing the borders and enforcing the law," said Lyman Stucky, a San Bernardino man who will be leading the caravan in his 1970 Mercury Cougar. "We are demanding that our hired employees our public servants enforce the law and do what they were sworn to do."
Organizers expect about 100 staff members and supporters to set off from Los Angeles, with some expected to complete the entire trip, some cutting their journeys short and others joining for stretches along the way.
The tour will wind through several Southern states en route to Capitol Hill, making stops in 12 cities along the way. Participants will join a rally Saturday near President Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas, where anti-illegal-immigration forces from across the nation plan to assemble for a protest against the president's border policy.
The caravan also plans stops in Phoenix; Albuquerque, N.M.; Abilene, Texas; Little Rock, Ark.; Memphis and Nashville, Tenn.; Birmingham, Ala.; Atlanta; Greensboro, N.C.; and Richmond, Va.
Stucky, who will be leading the way in his flashy red-white-and-blue Cougar, dubbed "The Spirit of Allegiance," said he's taking the 3,000-mile trip because he strongly believes in the Minuteman mantra that the law should be upheld by elected officials.
The 48-year-old business consultant said he takes no issue with people who migrate to America and obtain citizenship through the appropriate channels.
"But when people come over the border and choose to retain all the ties to their original country, including a fierce loyalty and sending all the resources there, I'm wondering if they're really Americans at heart and why they're here," he said.
Minuteman Project officials have no illusions that they will be able to match the kind of turnout seen in Monday's rallies, when more than 1 million illegal immigrants and their supporters flooded streets across the country.
"Our power is not putting a million people on the street. Our power is putting 10 million people at the voting box," said Stephen Eichler, the group's executive director. "Their voice is accompanied by a lot of bodies, but our voice is accompanied by even more bodies who aren't going to go out in the street."
One supporter, Penny Magnotto of Upland, said she and a friend were planning to follow the caravan in their RV and visit seven additional states during their return to recruit members.
"We'll never get a million Americans out on the streets. You couldn't," said Magnotto, founder of the Minuteman spinoff Minutewomen on the Road. "But if one in 100 people that we meet up with kind of gets it and sees that we're nice family people, I will be thrilled."
Other local anti-illegal-immigration groups said they have no immediate plans for public demonstrations in the wake of Monday's boycott.
Andy Ramirez, chairman of the Chino-based nonprofit Friends of the Border Patrol, said the types of rallies organized by leaders of the Minuteman Project and other groups accomplish little more than stirring emotions.
"They're great publicity stunts, great fund-raising opportunities, but now it's time to start engaging in substance," Ramirez said. "The movement has to stop for a moment and think, `What is actually going to accomplish something?' "
His group, for example, has installed "freedom cameras" at the border, enabling volunteers and Border Patrol agents to monitor suspicious activity, he said.
Joseph Turner, executive director of the San Bernardino-based Save Our State, said he's focusing his energy on the success of a citywide initiative he wrote to crack down on illegal immigrants in San Bernardino.
The measure would ban the city from using tax dollars to set up day-labor centers, require officials to deny business permits to companies that hire illegal immigrants, and impose $1,000 fines on landlords who rent to illegal immigrants, among other things.
Turner submitted more than 3,100 signatures to the City Clerk's office last week, of which 2,216 must be valid. A ruling on the validity of the signatures is expected by Thursday.
As for protests, Turner said the million demonstrators who flooded the nation's cities on Monday hurt their own cause more than anything he could have come up with.
"The greatest thing that could ever happen is for them to start rallying like they have," he said.

The Minutemen will be starting the first leg tomorrow, led by FReeper Lyman Stucky's patriotic pace car. We want the borders sealed!
Allegiance is not an option!
Citizenship Requires Allegiance--
if you refuse to pledge and prove Allegiance to
The United States Of America and OUR Flag,
Where, WHERE, IS your Allegiance?
-- FReeper Lyman Stucky (The Spirit Of Allegiance), May 1, 2006
Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. -- Theodore Roosevelt
Hi, Fellow Americans and Neighbors. I'm glad you're here.
I own and drive The Spirit Of Allegiance car, set to depart Los Angeles May 3, heading for Crawford TX and then to go on to Washington DC to demand that President Bush and Congress seal our borders and ensure our sovereignty as a nation, physically and spiritually, One Nation Under God.
The Pledge of Allegiance and the situation on our Republic's borders are very much connected. Spiritually. And Patriotically. Our nation's borders have to do with our nation's sovereignty physically just as much as the Newdow and other God-hating atheist cases have to do with our acknowledgment of God's sovereignty spiritually
A little background is important...and it all ties together...
This site was launched in 2002 to fight Michael Newdow's anti-American attack in cahoots with certain treacherous fellow-traveler Marxist judges who have not thrown his cases out as being frivolous and without standing.
Here is the Pace Car that will lead the way through Crawford and on to D.C. (JimRob won't be in it, but would you like to be?)

Minuteman Caravan
We have seen defiance of the rule of law by foreign nationals. We have seen protests across America with disdain for American sovereignty. Defiance of the law supported by protest is outrageous to those who are lawful and proud of America.
Criminal aliens and their followers have taken to the streets demanding not their rights but your rights. This sort of massive illegal incursion would not be tolerated in any other country. Many in Congress refuse to listen to the will of Americans and turn a blind eye to the rule of law. Capitol Hill has been bought and paid for by special interest groups who benefit from cheap sweat shop labor and the 21st century economic slave trade.
Many say it is too late for the lawmakers have received their 30 pieces of silver.
The Minutemen know that it is not too late to restore Americas faith in the rule of law and it is not too late to convince Capitol Hill that the American people have had enough! What is to be done? We shall drive across the nation from California to Washington D.C. in the first ever Minuteman Project Caravan. We will be in Crawford, Texas to support the protest on May 6th (http://www.areckoning.com). We will roll into Washington with historys biggest convoy on May 12th.
WARNING: This is not for armchair generals, weak kneed politicians or glory seekers.
The road will be tough, the distance will be far. Cowards need not apply! The Minuteman Project Headquarters is being flooded with emails and phone calls from alarmed citizens asking what can be done! Frankly, saving America is not only on the shoulders of the Minutemen and Jim Gilchrist but on the shoulders of WE THE PEOPLE. The Minuteman Project Volunteers and brave hearted Americans has been fighting while others slept.
It is now time to stop complaining and start reclaiming America!
We have an opportunity for every American to make a historic statement in the ears of Capitol Hill putting them on notice that the people will secure the United States of America for our children. What about the millions of immigrants waiting peacefully to become citizens legally? The Minutemen will not stand by and let them get ripped-off by trespassing Foreign Nationals who are cutting in line and bullying their way into amnesty! We will not forget the elected officials of both parties who care enough about Americas to secure the border and enforce the law. At the ballet box the voters will send those who have betrayed the U.S. Constitution to the unemployment line!
We need your help now!
Join this historic event officially known as The Minuteman Project Caravan. Join today. There will be those who can journey with us a short distance, others a few states, but many will endure the thousands of miles between Los Angeles and Washington experiencing the hardships that come with such a campaign. Everyone can do something to change the destructive course that America is on.
All of America will be with us when we stand on the steps of the Capitol and make our voices heard!
In order to proceed with this generation defining event, we need to know NOW that we have your support. We can only accomplish this by the people of America rallying behind us. This statement must be made now!
Tomorrow will be too late! The viability of the caravan is contingent upon you help!
We desperately need donations of the following:

The immigration debate just got a little weirder:The Minuteman Project is kicking off a Minuteman Caravan Wednesday morning to drive from Los Angeles to Washington, DC, stopping in Phoenix and Crawford, TX, the president's home town.So why start in predominantly black Leimert Park?
"Over 40% of black teenagers are unemployed. Overall unemployment in the black community is double that of white Americans," said Minuteman Founder Jim Gilchrist. "They are the most harmed by illegal immigration and it's time we focused our efforts in our inner cities where help is needed most."Make of this what you will, but to me the racial politicking is ... interesting.CLICK HERE for the rest of that thread
I recall the interview with a black homeless activist. His view is that blacks are not being hired at places like Burger King, among others, because of the illegal aliens. This has resulted in an alliance with the Minutemen.

LEIMERT PARK A coalition of community activists from diverse backgrounds came together in Leimert Park Wednesday to denounce homeless activist Ted Hayes recent alliance with the ultra-conservative Minutemen Project as a means of battling illegal immigration.
During an afternoon news conference at the Lucy Florence Coffeehouse, activist Najee Ali said he believed Hayes is being used as a pawn by what he called a racist faction that never has affiliated itself with the black community until now.
"Ted Hayes and his involvement in the Minuteman group is certainly an issue that we should be concerned about," Ali said. "We feel that [the Minutemen] will polarize the [black and Latino] communities. It will bring us farther and farther apart instead of [bringing us] together collectively to talk about tolerance, peace and resolution."
Hayes, who did not attend the news conference, said he approached the Minutemen about eight months ago, in part, because they were in support of helping the homeless. Hayes help[ed] organize Dome Village, the homeless encampment west of downtown.
"Im realizing that illegal immigration is taking away the resources of the homeless," Hayes said. "The Minutemen are right. They want to help the homeless. I cant get Jesse [Jackson] or [Rep.] Maxine Waters to work with the homeless. Whos helping me? White people."

Drive for strict US immigrant lawCampaigners in favour of tightening US immigration laws are preparing to set off on a 12-city tour to try to build support for their cause.
Minuteman Project members have staged protests in recent weeksThe Minuteman Project, which patrols the US-Mexico border, is launching the 10-day convoy after pro-immigrant mass rallies across the country.
About 100 people will travel from Los Angeles to Washington DC for a rally.
It comes as the US Senate prepares to try again to break the deadlock on immigration reform.
The Minuteman group is made up of volunteers who strongly oppose illegal immigration, and organise border patrols to try to prevent people crossing into the US illegally.

The caravan will leave Los Angeles on Wednesday, where it plans to highlight unemployment in the African-American community.
It says the problem is caused by illegal immigrants taking jobs "that Americans would be willing to do".
The group is planning to hold rallies in cities including Phoenix in Arizona, and Crawford in Texas, where President George W Bush has a ranch.
The convoy will finish by driving to Capitol Hill in Washington DC for a rally on 12 May.
US ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTSAbout 11.5m illegal immigrants in the USFour out of 10 have been in US five years or less75% were born in Latin AmericaMost enter via southern US borderCalifornia, Texas and Florida host most illegal immigrantsMany work in agriculture, transport and construction
"Our power is not putting a million people on the street, our power is putting 10 million people at the voting box," said executive director Stephen Eichler.
The US Senate's majority leader, Bill Frist, said on Tuesday the Senate would try again within weeks to break the deadlock on immigration reform.
He was speaking after huge demonstrations on Monday illustrated immigrants' demands for recognition.
Congress is caught between competing bills that would either criminalise or legitimise illegal immigrants.
Mr Frist said his attempts at reconciliation would focus on "border security first and foremost".
But he acknowledged that legislation also had to address the issue fo the estimated 11.5 million illegal immigrants in the US.
Great RonDog. Thanks for the post.
What a great idea and the press WILL cover this. Maybe Congress will see how many support the cause. Geez, I hope so.
Good job.

Gas always seems to be cheaper in other states. I wish I could pledge something. All I can do is keep everyone in my thoughts and prayers. Btw, I was watching the news on KABC, and a few minutes ago, they showed Ted Hayes and Jim Gilchrist : )
KABC 7 just had a burp on Ted Hayes and Jim Gilchrist early on in their broadcast. They cannot ignore this!
The NAACP doesn't think so. They think that we need even more "Diversity" by bringing in more illegal aliens and creating a whole new victim class.

CROSS COUNTRY
Rasta Republican
Meet Los Angeles's Ted Hayes. He's black, dreadlocked--and belongs to the GOP.
BY JILL STEWART
Thursday, April 28, 2005 12:01 a.m.
LOS ANGELES--Condoleezza Rice and Ward Connerly once epitomized black Republicans in California. But their ilk now also includes Ted Hayes, a social activist and inner-city coach whose billowing robes and dreadlocks don't exactly conjure up an image of the GOP.
More blacks than ever support vouchers and faith-based initiatives, and side with President Bush on gay marriage. Mr. Hayes recently made the transition himself, ending a long journey for this former leftist who founded Dome Village, an outcropping of pod-like homeless shelters along the freeway in downtown Los Angeles.
There are other prominent black Republicans in California, of course, such as syndicated radio host Larry Elder and community relations expert Joe Hicks. But even among these unusual thinkers, Mr. Hayes stands out. He's an intense critic of L.A.'s powerful "black old guard"--Democratic politicians, charity bosses and inner-city preachers who, for a generation, have responded to poverty and illiteracy by demanding government programs and blaming white racism.
Not surprisingly, plenty of people wish pesky black Republicans like Mr. Hayes would just slink away. He has skewered L.A.'s entrenched black leaders as "Negro officials," and he has the street cred to get away with it. As L.A. endured another crisis between black leaders and cops recently, he refused to denounce police for shooting dead a 13-year-old, Devin Brown, after a car chase. Instead, Mr. Hayes's press release faulted black church leaders who, despite their great power, rarely point to the lack of parental responsibility...-- snip --

The movement is growing. People have had it with cowardly politicans who pander for racial votes. They will either listen to us or be thrown out of office like the Hernden politicans who built the day laborer center against the will of the people.

Minutemen's message on immigration: on a roll?
The activist group will pass through 12 US cities during a push for tighter US borders. Polls show most Americans support that.By Daniel B. Wood | Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor
LOS ANGELES - Construction worker John Peaslee drove 100 miles from Kern County to cheer, wave an American flag, and send a message to the US government to "close the border, period."
Microbiologist Heather Evans took the morning off work to "stand up for the US Constitution ... without which we will lose the American culture, country, and values," she says.
Lyman Stucky will dedicate the next two weeks and "a few tanks of gas" to caravan all the way to Washington to "urge people to stand up and encourage others to do what's right: Obey the law, that's what makes America great."

Minutemen take show on road
CARAVAN: The illegal-immigration foes begin a cross-country trip in a bid to drum up support.
10:00 PM PDT on Wednesday, May 3, 2006
Minuteman Project co-founder James Gilchrist led a cross-country caravan from Los Angeles on Monday to recruit new members among those who were turned off by recent pro-immigrant demonstrations.
AP photo Genevieve Peters, left, a Minuteman supporter, argues with Monica Morant in Los Angeles. Minuteman Project co-founder James Gilchrist kicked off a cross-country caravan in Los Angeles on Monday to recruit new members. The tour began in Los Angeles' Leimert Park, a famed black cultural center. The destination rally in Washington, D.C., on May 12 will feature Ted Hayes, a longtime advocate for the homeless who says that large-scale illegal immigration takes jobs from black Americans.
Calling from a mobile phone in an RV rolling on Interstate 10 nearing Blythe, Gilchrist said the marches bolstered the Minuteman Project. Demonstrators, he said, "were sitting under a Mexican flag claiming that the U.S. is theirs. That's just upsetting Middle America."
He said, "Every time our adversaries did something like that, our volunteers doubled overnight and our donations tripled."
Nativo V. Lopez, a spokesman for the March 25 Coalition that organized the recent boycott and large marches, said the Minuteman caravan was an effort to regain the limelight following heavy coverage of pro-immigrant demonstrations.
"They are appealing to the base, nativist prejudice of a minority of Americans," Lopez said.
Gayle Nyberg, of Murrieta, said she and Penny Magnotto, of Perris, planned to join the road trippers early Monday in Los Angeles, but their 1986 Pace Arrow RV, freshly painted for the tour with red and blue stripes and white stars, clipped a car at a gas station and had to join the caravan later in Indio.
About 10 vehicles are in the caravan, Magnotto said. She said she often checks out the window to make sure she is not being followed by some of those who have threatened project members.
"If I'm going to die on the highway trying to save my country, so be it," Magnotto said. She estimates the trip to Washington and back will cost about $3,000 in gas and expenses.
A rally was set for Wednesday in Phoenix, and another in Crawford, Texas, President Bush's hometown, on Saturday. The caravan will pass through Arkansas, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia on the way to Washington, D.C.
The group has been critical of Bush's support for immigration law changes that would permit large numbers of undocumented immigrants to stay as guest workers or permanent legal residents.
