There were few surprises in store after the cable news ratings were tallied for the month of April, as Fox News Channel remained leagues ahead of its rivals in prime time and total day.
According to data released this afternoon by Nielsen Media Research, FNC was tops among P2+ in total day, averaging 787,000 total viewers on the month, a slight dip of 4 percent from April 2005. In prime, FNC's total viewers averaged 1.43 million, a drop of 5 percent year-over-year.
CNN ranked second in total day, averaging 423,000 viewers, a precipituous drop-off of 20 percent from a year ago. The network also showed a steep drop in prime, averaging 701,000 total viewers in the daypart, a loss of 22 percent.
Both FNC and CNN continue to see big plummets among their core 25-54 demo, with FNC off 19 percent in the category in prime (312,000), while CNN fell 38 percent (172,000).
FNC boasted eight of the top 10 cable news programs last month, with The O'Reilly Factor besting all comers with an average viewership of 2.08 million and 403,000 in the 25-54 demo. CNN had two programs in the top 10, with its perennial ratings leader larry King Live taking fifth place and Lou Dobbs Tonight coming in at number eight.
Third-place MSNBC saw its prime time audience jump 8 percent to 370,000, bolstered in part by the success of its Countdown with Keith Olbermann, which was the number two cable news program in the 8:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. time slot in the 25-54 demo, behind O'Reilly. Olbermann averaged 419,000 total viewers on the month, and 156,000 in the news demo, an increase of 37 percent. Headline News' Nancy Grace took third in the demo at 8:00 p.m., averaging 150,000 25-54s, while CNN's Paula Zahn Now lost 41 percent of the demo, coming in fourth with 147,000.
Overall, Headline News finished in fourth, raiding its total average prime time audience 31 percent to 360,000, while upping its 25-54 audience 24 percent to 115,000. CNBC came in last, raising its total prime audience 37 percent to 180,000, and hiking its 25-54 viewership 30 percent to 87,000.
Ping
Starting Mon day the numbers for 7:00 pm change. Glenn Beck's show starts on CNN Headline News. Its will be tyheir first conservative based show. Glenn has a betting pool on how soon the CNN execs will keep the show on the air.
It will be interesting.
And I read earlier today Olberman is moving to the 9pm time slot -- against H&C.. I hope H&C stop all the Duke LaCross coverage before Olberman takes over their ratings.
FNC has been looking more and more like any other LSM cable channel. Methinks it has to do with the bunch of producers they hired while ago from the NY Slimes. And it is starting to show in the ratings.
This is likely going to be the only show I'll be sure to watch on any of the "news" channels.
How many listeners does Rush have in a given hour as compared to Olberman? (Whose numbers I find appalling).
He must be attracting the Daily Kos dopes.
Also, just in case someone happens to know, how would the cost of say a 30 second commercial differ between MSNBC and FNC?
What an understatement!
I've not quite understood why that "sick freak" would go to CNN. Maybe it's the moeny. Maybe it's the chance to get a conservative on CNN. I might watch, since he's opposite Shep.

Please FReepmail me if you want on or off my FoxFan list. *Warning: This can be a high-volume ping list at times.
BOR is insufferable. Recently, I've heard him make two grevious historical errors. The one I recall was citing British impressment of U.S. sailors in the Revolutionary era. Uh, Bill, the impressment issue came to a head in Jefferson's Administrations, which were not 1775-1781.
