Lawmakers pass key lime pie bill after fierce debate(Florida)
Tampa Bay News 9 ^ | 05/04/2006 | Bay News 9

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - After a fierce debate, House lawmakers have decided that key lime pie will be the state's official pie.

The bakers' battle had come down to two contenders, sweet potato pie and key lime pie.

As the bill moved through the Legislature this year, Florida pie lovers also took up the debate.

In March, 30 people in Broward County signed a petition to defend the dessert, and bloggers logged in to join the key lime ranks. Some wanted to add pecan pie to the mix, but legislators said that tasted too much like Georgia.

The Senate has already voted for the dessert, so now the bill goes to Governor Jeb Bush for signing. There's no official word on whether he's a key lime fan.

Another example of Yankee infiltration into our beloved South. Key Lime pie? Get real -- the only pie is Pecan Pie. ;-)

Is this key lime pie made with REAL key lime juice, or imitation? If it's imitation, I for one will be disenfranchised and likely will have to sue the State.

p.s. The company "Nellie and Joes" does not use key limes in their juice, so keep that in mind if you make key lime pie...even tho. they advertise it is key lime juice

I see the legislators in the south have been quite busy doing the business their states and our nation clearly need.

South Carolina legislated boiled peanuts as the state snack, and now Florida with key lime pie (and btw, there is nothing Yankee about key lime pie, the key lime is not indigenous to above the mason dixon line).

Where is N. Carolina? State food = pulled porked with a no tomato vinegar based sauce with cole slaw on the sandwich?

"... the only pie is Pecan Pie."

Never had even one bite of pecan pie in my life, and I'm not about to. I just can't agree with your statement. Any pie that could kill me is no pie at all. (I'm allergic to pecans)

LOL!

Here in Ohio, legislators took the very vital step of declaring "Hang On Sloopy" as our official state rock song.

During debate over this crucial public policy issue, one legislator stood and sang the whole song...off-key IIRC, but at least he got the lyrics right.

How fortunate we are, to have lawmakers who bear such gravity on their shoulders...whose carefully weighed decisions move the nation forward...

:o)

I was under the impression that the Key Limes were smaller and more tart than regular limes.

As such a true "Key Lime" pie tastes different than a regular pie.

Pecan Pie and Sweet Potato Pie? That brings GA, AL and the Carolinas to my mind.

Yes! it does! But it doesnt contain "Key Limes"!

I even wrote them and asked and they replied "It's a secret ingredient". It's regular limes, if limes at all! But I still use it although it is not "key" limes.

You are correct, Key Limes are smaller and have a different flavor. I hesitate to say that they are more tart because that might be confused with bitter, let's just say they taste better than regular limes. I LOVE Key Lime Pie!

Best Key Lime pie I ever had was in a small mom/pop type restaurant in Marathon, FL. We were driving out to Key West from Miami (this was 20 years ago) and stopped for lunch. Not sure what was special about the recipe but it was the best Key Lime pie ever.

It is superior to Realime. Perhaps some kind of hybrid lime.

It's sometimes possible to get key limes in the grocery. Ridiculous prices, but at least then you could get genuine fresh key lime juice.

I always wondered how Realime/lemon got their fruits to grow with a plastic rine Key Lime is a good choice for Flori-duh. Pecan is more a Georgia thing. As I like them both, it's cool.

If you get the juice out of a bottle it ain't key lime juice. Most stores sell key limes now. They're from Mexico, but they still taste good.

Yep theyre hard to find.

Found this on Amazon.com -

While "real" Key limes are no longer grown commercially—a 1920s freeze wiped out the groves in the Florida Keys—the Key limes grown in Mexico have the same "biological fingerprint" as those original Florida limes.

Wonder if that is really true? BTW, the Nellie & Joe's bottles now say "Key West Lime Juice".
