Afghan Militant Pledges Support To Bin Laden

An Afghan warlord wanted by the United States said in a videotape broadcast Thursday that he and his followers want to support Osama bin Laden in battle.

"We hope to participate with them in a battle that they lead. They hold the banner and we stand alongside them as supporters," Gulbuddin Hekmatyar said in the tape broadcast by the Al-Jazeera satellite network.

The tape appeared less than two weeks after top Islamist militants, including bin Laden, issued messages in quick succession.

Bin Laden, his No. 2 Ayman al-Zawahri and the head of al Qaeda in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, weighed in on the so-called war on Islam and the political and security situations in Iraq.

Al-Jazeera did not say how it received the tape.

Hekmatyar wore a black turban and eyeglasses, and sported a long grayish-white beard. A rifle was propped up against the wall behind him.

"We hope to participate with them in a battle that they lead."

Hey, that is great. Tell you what, provide a time and place to the nearest Marine and the battle will be on.

It'll be a hoot even if it doesn't last all that long.

"Al-Jazeera did not say how it received the tape."

That's a no brainer- they made it in studio. Why the terrorist news network is allowed to roam freely is baffling. It should have been bombed out of existance years ago. As for all the squalking these so called terrorist leaders are doing, it shows that they aren't doing so well. They are obviously trying to stir up support/recruits. I guess they don't have as many mental muslims willing to blow themselves up as they thought they did.

Hekmatyar was supported by the ISI (Pakistan's military intelligence) during the Soviet-Afghan war, and received millions of dollars from them. While he lost out to Massood after the Soviet's left, he still has an overpowering ambition to take over power in Afghanistan. I believe that he thinks if he pins his hopes on bin Laden and the Taliban prevail in overturning Karzi, he will be in the catbird seat to resume his quest for the seat of power.
