I'd like to see anyone on this forum do better. Pit Bull-sized rapidly moving target. You miss, you get chomped. Note that the officers did not get chomped. Looks like their shooting skills are fine to anyone but a keyboard Rambo.

Thank You,

I get the feeling that the people recommending range practice have never shot a pistol at a moving target under stress. Harder than standing at the range. Harder than you think.

Yawn. Cesar is a noobie. I'll see yer Dawg Whispererer and raise you one Captain Haggerty*

*This guy's been trainer of recalcitrant celebrity dogs for decades. Cesar is simply the darling of the rap set and Oprah.

Actually some serious schooling in stress fire techniques - and lots of it.

Does this mean we'll start having threads where morons have dick-measuring contests about shooting blue heelers?

Pits will eat those things for a snack. I have seen it firsthand.

You're right about the IQ quotient, though.

I absolutely would not own a pit-bull.

We periodically had to do the same thing in our compounds in Vietnam.

Warning was given well beforehand for the troops to get the dogs that were actually pets over to the military vets to be vaccinated and tagged. Only a few actually were taken through the process. On the designated day, the preferred weapon of choice for the cull team was a shotgun with 00 buckshot delivered at very close range. Dogs can be pretty tough animals. Sometimes the first shot was not immediately fatal and a follow-up shot was necessary to finish them off.

Still, even for combat troops, doing the deed was a particularly cold blooded thing to do, since most of the unfortunate dogs were just trying to stay alive and were not aggressive at all; just out of luck.

C'est le guerre.

My dog, Faith, is a shelty/blue heeler mix, and she is only dangerous to socks and underwear.

My fiancee wants to get either a rottie or a pit, from a pound no less!
Any suggestions on how to explain that me, my son and our small, yippy dog will not be living with a four-legged demon dog?

No dispute that range time is important. But ranges where one can practice shooting at pit bulls that are trying to kill you are rather difficult to find.

Probably couldn't with witnesses (including an animal control officer) standing right there.

Anyway, finishing off the wounded aggressor is a bad habit to get into. Never know who is going to be filming you with a video camera or one of those video cell phones thingys. Better to just kill them outright in the initial engagement. If you don't, you've got to treat them, dog or human.

Of course, I'm writing this as a retired Marine. Police have a different set of rules they must follow. Everytime I watch "COPS," I am amazed by their restraint.

The first shot got the dog in the chest, the second in his side. I'd be surprised, too, that he wasn't down after that. Sounds like the panicky shooting started after that.

My neighbor is a cop. Drug Task Force in a major CT city. They served a warrant on an apartment and when they broke down the door (the dog was trained so as not to make a sound when someone knocked, etc) the pit bull bit his partner on the thigh & would not let go. So, he took his .45 & shot the dog 3 times and it fell to the ground.

They search the home and when they came back out, the dog was gone! They found it dead in the street 4 blocks away. Unreal.

Well, after this, whatever they were calling him before, they ought to change it to "Mongo".

Or Cujo.
