Former CIA officer Plame signs book deal: Web site
Saturday, May 06, 2006 12:47:18 PM ET
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former CIA operative Valerie Plame, whose identity was disclosed in a press leak that touched off a federal probe, has signed a book deal worth more than $2.5 million, a publishing industry Web site said on Saturday.
Publishers Marketplace (http://www.publishersmarketplace.com), where most publishers report details of their book deals, said Plame had signed a deal with Crown, an imprint of Random House, "reportedly for more than $2.5 million."
The memoir, entitled "Fair Game," will detail Plame's "role in the American intelligence community, as well as the prominence of her role in the lead-up to the (Iraq) war," Publishers Marketplace said.
Plame's agent and representatives from Random House could not be immediately reached for comment.
Former U.S. Ambassador Joseph Wilson, Plame's husband, maintains the disclosure of his wife's identity was retaliation for statements he made about the Bush administration's justification for the war in Iraq.
Wilson said the administration manipulated intelligence in the lead-up to the March 2003 invasion of Iraq. Soon afterward, Plame's identity as a covert CIA operative was leaked to journalists.
A special prosecutor is investigating who blew Plame's cover in July 2003.
Vice President Dick Cheney's former chief of staff, Lewis "Scooter" Libby, and senior Bush adviser Karl Rove spoke to reporters about Plame before her identity was made public by columnist Robert Novak.
In October, Libby was charged with obstruction of justice and lying to FBI agents and a grand jury during the investigation. Libby has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Rove has appeared five time before the grand jury investigating the Plame leak. He has not received any indication from Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald about whether he would be charged, Rove's attorney Robert Luskin said.
Depending on the nature of Plame's book, it may have to undergo a CIA review before it is published, a CIA spokesman said.
Current or former CIA employees who publish materials like books or op-ed pieces that deal with national security or intelligence matters must clear the project with the agency's publications review board, the spokesman said.
"The pre-publication review process is designed to avoid the inadvertent disclosure of classified information into the public domain," he said. (c) Reuters 2006. All rights reserved. But...but...she's covert! Will she use a pseudonym?
I wonder if she celebrated with tea and yellow cake?
I still say Wilson and Plame outed Plame.
MORE ON WILSON/LIBBY [Byron York] This afternoon CNN reported the news, published earlier in The Corner, that Lewis Libby's defense lawyers say they will produce five witnesses who will testify under oath that former ambassador Joseph Wilson told them that his wife, Valerie Plame Wilson, worked for the CIA, a job status that, allegedly, was classified. CNN also reported a response from Joseph Wilson:
BLITZER: And John, producer, Stephanie Katube (sp), just got a statement from Ambassador Joe Wilson. Let me read it to you and to our viewers. "The last I heard," Wilson says, "this is case is about allegations Mr. Libby lied, perjured himself before the FBI, special prosecutor and grand jury and obstructed justice. None of those charges of which he's been indicted has anything to do with me."
Wilson goes on to say, "Furthermore, the government in the person of the special prosecutor in his court filings has made it clear it believes several White House officials were engaged in a campaign to, quote, `discredit, punish and seek revenge' on me. It would appear that campaign is ongoing."
What seems notable about Wilson's statement, if CNN read it in full, is that it does not address the issue of whether or not he told people that his wife worked for the CIA.
I don't see this reported anywhere. Why?
If Wilson is the leaker....
Doesn't this woman who just wants to be a wife and mother fear former KGB assassins and such from showing up at her book signings?
I thought her life was ruined!!! Poor thing has to give up a low paying cia payroll for a couple million bucks. Come cry on my shoulder Valerie.
Lets just see what kind of leftist political connections her publishers have?
And there's nothing we can do about it.
I wish Republicans were in charge.
Like this wasn't the goal all along.
I'm moving to France.
At last we see what this was all about.
Traitorous criminals should not be permitted to profit from their behaviour. Here's to hoping that she get's hers. < /not holding my breath during Bush's wimpodyte/spendthrift administration>
Blood money.
According to an interview with Wilson, she had dreams of running for political office some day. This was her chance to become a Socialist hero, so she and her husband went for it. It was the only chance she had to make a good name for herself among democrat voters.
It didn't turn out quite as they had planned, and they were exposed as American traitors to the world instead, but the left wing press is rewarding her and her husband for their efforts anyway.
Have publishing deals become the corporate equivalent of high stakes poker games ... a means of funneling payoffs, in the form of advances, to political operatives for books that will not sell and will be remaindered withint a short period of time? Loss leaders, if you will ...
Wilson has issued the usual spin, a "non-denial denial" which pretends to address the issue while actually changing the subject and going on the attack. Competent reporters would never let him get away with such obvious b.s., but then we do not have many competent reporters in the world.......
Novak and the 'leaker' should demand major royalties from Ms. Pflame/Wilson -- she and Joe are now millionaires due to this fraudulent story that they have worked for 3 years. Easy money if you can get it - but Joe, I thought Valerie treasured her privacy and wanted to stay out of the spotlight, except for the occasional Vanity Fair photo spread or national White House Correspondents' Dinner on TV??????
Good lord, these fraud artists are as brazen as the Clintons!!
"A special prosecutor is investigating who blew Plame's cover in July 2003."
Really?
(rolls eyes)
Coincidence? This announcement on the heels of Goss' exit?
SOMEBODY GIVE MCCARTHY A CLUE!
The new CIA Chief should subject Plame to the same lie detector test that Mary McCarthy had and I'm sure will find out that she is the source of many other leaks jeopardizing our national security with help from our unpatriotic munchausen syndrome by proxy mainstream media.
Amen to that. With that money, these buffoons can really act like buffoons.
When I was a kid growing up in America, CIA people to their secrets with them to their graves. Now, The Clintonista Era scumbags employed by the CIA sign book and movie deals before they get their final paycheck. Scumbags.
I think we are past the point of being able to whine and complain about the MSM. Somehow Reagan managed to get his message across without it, the Republicans in 94 did it. And now we have the "new media". Between Bush's "bully pulpit", the Internet, Talk radio, Fox News, etc. we don't have to care if the dinosaur "alien media nation" spins things our way or not.
Sadly, we simply have no message any more.
I like that much better.
Think I'll pass this one up when it is in the $1.00 bin by the end of the year.
