Counting on victory in November, Democrats outline plans
Homeland security, a boost to the minimum wage and White House investigations top legislative agenda
By Jonathan Weisman
WASHINGTON POST
Posted on Sun, May. 07, 2006

WASHINGTON - Democratic leaders, increasingly confident they will seize control of the House in November, are laying plans for a legislative blitz during their first week in power that would raise the minimum wage, roll back parts of the Republican prescription drug law, implement homeland security measures and reinstate lapsed budget deficit controls.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-San Francisco, said last week that a Democratic House would launch a series of investigations of the Bush administration, beginning with the White House's first-term energy task force and probably including the use of intelligence in the run-up to the invasion of Iraq. Pelosi denied Republican allegations that a Democratic House would move quickly to impeach President Bush. But, she said of the planned investigations, "You never know where it leads to."

In recent days, Democratic confidence has been buoyed by a series of polls indicating that not only is Bush growing increasingly unpopular, so are Republicans in Congress. An Associated Press-Ipsos poll released Friday found that 33 percent of the public approves of Bush's job performance, the lowest rating of his presidency. And only 25 percent approves of the job Congress is doing, a figure comparable to congressional approval ratings before the 1994 elections that swept Republicans to power.

The AP-Ipsos poll found that 51 percent of Americans say they want Democrats rather than Republicans to control Congress. Only 34 percent favor Republican control.

"We have to be ready to win," Pelosi said, "and we have to tell (voters) what we will do when we win."

But Democratic planning runs parallel to similar efforts 12 years ago, when GOP leaders were plotting a return to control after 42 years.

Pelosi was on this morning's Meet The Depressed. She's a mess. Her thoughts were random, her facts were missing, and her hands were shaking. She can smell power and will do or say anything to get it back. Apparently, RATS can only have 'personal' ethics problems that they need to take care of themselves. According to Nancy, the GOP has SYSTEMATIC ethics problems - probably due to their agenda like privatizing Social Security and changing the tax code.

The RATS appear to be in bigger trouble than ever before.

There is only one real democrat plan that can be summarized in three words: IMPEACHMENT, IMPEACHMENT, IMPEACHMENT.

Nancy's last facelift also warped and twisted the word processing portion of her brain. But it doesn't matter if she were talking backward. The GOP (Grassley, Bond, Lugar, etc., have so botched their leadership opportunity that I'm ready to see them go.

The election turn in November will be more of the Republicans GIVING the democrats control than the dems winning anything.

From health care and social security to the ridiculous idea of eliminating more entry level jobs by raising the minimum wage the dems have no logical path of improvement. But, they will push the war issue to a naive and uneducated public with no rebuttal from the right.

Every republican candidate should be holding pictures of severed heads and mutilated children in front of their opponents and demand they explain to the voters what the world will be like when they cut and run from Iraq and let the carnage begin.

The carnage at the Russian school will be visited upon America if the Dems win.

Trouble is...no Republican has the backbone to do this.

For all of Bush's faults and wrong decisions(immigration), he does have a semblance of a backbone.

When the Democrat Party dreams of majority control (induced by the alphabet media and their own lack of intellectual honesty) is proved to be nothing more than the continued minority nightmare, will the suicide rate of these Leftists be front page news?

I don't see any republicans with the nerve to take off the gloves and go after Hillary in '08 either.

This poll is not as pessimistic towards Republicans.

"The poll shows that Democrats have small edge over Republicans on the vote question. If the congressional election were held today, 41 percent of registered voters say they would vote for or lean toward the Democratic candidate and 38 percent the Republican candidate. Almost one in five voters (21 percent) are undecided."

I think this is the year that a significant shift to Republicans comes among black voters in the mid-Atlantic states. Not only do Dems not take back the house, but they lose a big chunk of that constituency. AS HH says the Blackwell Swan Steele races are huge, even if they don't win them all.

The Democrats cannot win because they will not protect America and Americans from the possibility of this (their rhetoric has nothing to do with leadership) They will pave the way for these killers just as Yale pandered to their Taliban.

Pelosi is a Socialist - (here is her voting record)

" (Give America a raise, Iraq not mentioned)"

Let me translate this evilish into English.

"Help dims raise the minimum wage, not because it gives the little guy working for minimum wage a helping hand, but so we can pay back pork to our largest financial supporters in the Labor Unions, whose future contract negotiations are directly tied to the "Minimum Wage" index".

"We now return you to the normal programming".

The Democrats are delusional, as usual.

The Democrats are still operating as if the country exists in the Industrial Age. It still hasn't dawned on them that the Information Age is a completely different beast.

In the past the Democrats held power purely based on their control of the information outlets. With the democratization of information, information has been freed from the confines of filtering by the news media. The process is far from complete, and alternative media is still in its infancy, but it is a powerful and influential infancy.

If the Democrats are going to run on the platform of higher wages, rolling back the prescription drug laws, and unimplementing parts of the Homeland Security Act, the Democrats are in for the following surprises.

1) The best way to raise wages is to give incentives to businesses to grow. Economic expansion. Cutting off the supply of illegal immigrants will also help increase wages. Open boarders are one factor in depressing wage growth in the private sector, by forcing legitimate workers to compete with illegal workers for slots, in which illegal workers carry an added bonus of being able to accept lower than minimum wage rates.
2) Artificially imposed wage increases decrease the purchasing power of the dollar and increase the rate of inflation. Being paid more does a worker no good if it means they can buy less.
3) Senior citizens will have grown accustomed to the new prescription benefit, and according to Fred Barnes, it is costing far less than projected. For those of you who don't like the plan, consider the cost of having to deal with senior citizens who skimp on their medications because they can't afford them. The medical costs of caring for senior citizens in emergency situations may be avoidable if they're able to obtain their medications at a low enough cost.
4) Homeland Security is a losing issue for Democrats. In 4 years, Americans have been told repeatedly that the Bush Administration is a fascist regime that abuses the powers granted in the Act. In that time, no additional terrorist attacks have succeeded on our soil, and the powers exercised by the government under the HSA have been relatively mild and unobtrusive. While everybody has heard about FBI agents allegedly visiting the homes of people who checked out "certain" books from the library, nobody actually knows somebody who was so visited, accosted, and interrogated to the degree that the urban legend suggests.

The Democrats are royally screwed if this is the outline of their 2006 platform.

If Bush and the GOP Congress hadn't tried to appease the Democrats so often, they wouldn't have most of their current problems.

If they can't make significant gains in this climate (broad disapproval of a GOP president, dissatisfaction with a GOP Congress), they are really going to crack up.

The GOP is in serious trouble if they continue to let the Democrats control the agenda.
Impeachment and filibuster talk seems to crumble any GOP resolve. Also the border issue has to be addressed with more than election year proposals. We need solid votes. We need people who will take a stand rather than ride the fence of public opinion. We need to reassure congress that no job is secure if they continue to ignore the people of America.
My opinion of the Repuyblican controlled congress is very low backbone and they will indeed lose to Democrats. Their agenda is no more clearly defined than the oratorical misguidance of the Democrats because they make a stand for nothing except talk.

THERE WILL BE NO CHANGE IF WE DON'T USE THE POLL OF THE VOTE. The guaranteed status quo is re-election. See tagline.

Only one way they can make gains is if conservatives stay home on election day.

And even then, it'll be close.

Frankly, I hope the Dems don't win in November. But we have to scare the GOP with the impending thought of being voted out if we the people are going to see any progress on every issue being talked about.
Immigration talk.
Energy talk.
Social Security talk.
Judicial selection talk.

People..... all the talk and proposals do not constitute a vote on any issue. Talk does not constitute action. We seem to forget that talk is all about what people want to hear.
Congress has been "talking" about the oil crisis since 1972 and the first OPEC embargo. Look where we are now.
ABSOLUTELY NOTHING has changed except we are importing double the oil and producing little more. We cannot hardly build power plants, mine coal, explore for gas and oil, place wind power off shore, build nuke power plants.........

Social security is more broke than ever and no fix has been voted upon.

Illegal immigration has become an invasion of law breakers forging documents for work and violating countless laws and where is the enforcement? Why should anyone get amnesty? Where is a vote for law enforcement?

The gang of 14 is still holding up judicial appointments although they "allowed" a couple of Supreme Court appointments. The filibuster word is frequently floated and it seems to scare Republicans. WHY???????

The solution is simple. Quit sending money to the GOP until they actually solve a crisis in leadership.
We cannot allow the promise of re-election as a guarantee that any problem will be solved......just give em more time.
The clock is ticking on my patience and so should it be on every other American who really cares about keeping America strong and sovergn.

Well .. raising the minimum wage is NOT GOOD FOR THE ECONOMY. It will cause layoffs in smaller businesses who cannot afford to pay those wages. If you have 10 minimum wagers in your company - you will have to let some go.

This is a no-brainer. And .. proves the dems have no brains.

The "culture of corruption" meme is, of course, the usual focus-grouped PR spin on the part of the media and the Donks.

Nothing new there. It's what the propagandists do. The problem is, however, that the Left is wont to take their little media constructions at face value.

They will get smashed again in November. Again.

For all of Bush's faults and wrong decisions(immigration), he does have a semblance of a backbone.

It was Condi Rice's job to make sure her President understood how the border was crumbling - not adhere to the politics as usual concerning V. Fox. She failed him and the US.

Bush does have backbone and he is a courageous leader in the face of the liberal smear and the obfuscations of everything he does. The last arrow in their rotting scabbard is a fraudulent attempt to impeach this honorable man...using monies from George Soros, ACLU, A.N.S.W.E.R. and other subversive communist fronts and using PAC money from Pelosi, Clinton, Conyers, etc. Everyone should try to expose this last attempt for the deception it is.
